Movie Apologist Thread

Author
Time

You know, all movies have goofs.  It's what inevitably happens when you edit together various takes of a story.  Things will never work out perfectly in every way.  But sometimes there are holes in logic that are just so glaring that it truly disrupts your enjoyment of those movies.

Most of this site is devoted to trashing certain movies, and that mentality has carried beyond Star Wars.  Any flaw in any film is just unacceptable to some.

But that's not what this thread is about.  This thread is for movies you love and cherish, but where you just need a little help explaining away some problems so you can get rid of that cognitive dissonance.

Take Jurassic Park.  I love that movie.  There are errors, like doors that magically change between open and shut, movie player bars when we're supposedly watching a live video conversation, etc.  I can overlook those, understanding they are part of the natural movie-making process.  However, I cannot get past the Tyrannosaurus paddock problem, where the ground magically drops 100 feet between T. rex's escape and Grant's/Lex's descent on the wire.  I cannot think of a reasonable justification.

OT.com: you're so good at tearing movies apart.  Can you explain away problems with the same ease?  Help me, OT.com.  You're my only hope.

We thought this was going to be a thread where we talk about movies we like even though we shouldn't.

Like European Vacation.  74% of the team enjoys that move.

Star Trek V,  Spock handing Sybok the gun and letting him take the Enterprise.  Ruined the whole movie for me.

I love Star Wars Episodes I-III, but what I didn't like about them was the actors, the CGI, the stories, the light saber battles, the NOOOOOOOO and the characters.

huh? could you explain this more clearly, I am having difficulty imagining what you are talking about here.

Didn't you create this thread once before, ender? I'm getting a serious case of deja vu from the content of your opening post.

I too was going to start talking about Star Trek: Nemesis until I read the post.

Needless to say, I'm not even going to mention how I actually love Nemesis despite its shortcomings.   I'm not going to mention how, for me, the tone makes up for the plotholes and that the only thing I don't like is Data dying.  Also, I'm not going to bring up how I love the starfield designs in that movie.

I can save you d_e, for I had the same problem until I found this image a few weeks ago:

Rexie actually pushes the car forward and over. When Ellie shouts she can see the car, you can see she's not looking at the same section of fence.

Thanks to both of you. Finally someone actually used this thread for its intended purpose.  I do appreciate this.  The thread you linked to is also useful for my question regarding The Lost World as well.

Pfft. You clearly haven't watched JP hard enough...

To quote Dennis Nedry "Some of the minor systems, they might go on or off but it’s ah, nothing to worry about, just a simple thing". Obvious really.

iplayer has the same thing. It means you can skip back and forwards during live TV. JP was just ahead of it's time... it was a Unix system afterall.

Never heard of erosion? From Wikipedia: "In geomorphology and geology, erosion is the action of exogenic processes (such as water flow or wind) which remove soil and rock from one location on the Earth's crust, then transport it to another location where it is deposited". Remember Hurricane Clarissa was in full effect during the T.Rex padock incident, which could easily have caused the necessary water and wind damage to displace the earth beyond the fence. Also nobody would have heard the rapid subsidence over all the screaming and nashing of teeth.

There you go, hope that helped.

Actually, those are all pretty fun answers!  I'm definitely okay these kinds of answers as well :)

Anyone else have some movie problems they need to have explained away?

Nope.  I'd rather apologize for a dumb movie I like.

Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes.  I don't care that everyone hates it, I kind of enjoy it.

I don't get where that image comes from. Is that supposed to be a statue of an evil Abraham Lincoln (I mean that smile...ugh...)

*Thank god that image is a jpeg. If that were a gif or png and didn't move for like 30 seconds and then jumpscare...

Nobody sang The Bunny Song in years…

You're thinking of Futurama...

It's directly related to Frink's post. ;)

It's from the end of that terrible Tim Burton abomination, "Planet of the Apes".
