In the last week, I watched the first season of Emily of New Moon.

When I was young, this show used to creep the bejeesus out of me. Looking back on it, I can recognize the bits which scared me, but they pack no punch anymore. I don’t know why I found those bits scary in the first place; I was ten going on eleven — I should’ve been made of sterner stuff than that. I guess I had arrested development.

Anyway, 7 sober Barnies out of 9.

The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale.

I never watched much of The Soup when it was on, but this is definitely The Soup 2.0 …

… and I now regret not watching much of The Soup when it was on. This was hilarious.

Aw man I thought you were talking about this guy and show and now I’m sad you weren’t 'cause that show was great.

That guy looks like a guy whose face is on a memorial plaque at my dad’s office.

So … that’s that, huh? I won’t say it’s bad — certainly, absolutely not — but neither was it satisfying, and I’m left with no desire to revisit the series in the future.

★★★★★★★☆☆☆ (for the season)

★★★★★★★★☆☆ (for the series in toto)

A fair assessment. I’ll probably admit that I liked the show way more because of who I watched it with than I would have if I’d watched it on my own, but it’s definitely solid.

I just finished watching Season 11 of The X-Files. My ratings for the individual episodes are as follow:

  • “The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat” – 8/10
  • “Kitten” – 8/10
  • “Ghouli” – 8/10
  • “Nothing Lasts Forever” – 7/10
  • “Familiar” – 6/10
  • “Rm9sbG93ZXJz” – 6/10
  • “This” – 6/10
  • “Plus One” – 5/10
  • “My Struggle III” – 3/10
  • “My Struggle IV” – 1/10

My final thoughts on what has become of the show? At best, it’s a cynical farce, but I feel it leans more towards complete nihilistic abomination. This will be my final season; I won’t be making a third visit to Chris Carter’s hacktacular freakshow.

★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆ (for the season)

★★★☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ (for the entire revival)

★★★★★★★☆☆☆ (for the series in toto)

The revival was sad indeed. I didn’t even bother with this last season.

Out of the entire revival, there’re only five episodes I consider rewatchable. That’s less than the number from Season 7, which I formerly considered the show’s worst season. A sad effort indeed.

You like season 9 more than season 7? Bold statement.

For my money:

3
4
2
5
1
8
6
7
9

I guess 10 would be at the bottom, and I don’t know where I’d place 11 since I haven’t seen the last 3-4 episodes.

Season 9 isn’t great, but Doggett’s character and the absence of episodes like “First Person Shooter” and “Fight Club” do much to make it a more watchable season in mine eyes.

Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams - Season 1

In a similar vein to Black Mirror - and enjoyable to watch too. A few nice twists and turns along the way for most of the stories - and always good to see well executed episodic sci-fi on tv 😃

i saw the first few, and didn’t continue. it seems dated to me, or maybe its just that i feel like i know what is happening in each episode long before it concludes… somehow black mirror seems fresher, or even if i know what is happening, it keeps me intrigued. Maybe i’ll finish Electric Dreams before my Prime subscription expires. (Still need to see season two of Sneaky Pete)

There were a couple of clinkers in there 😉 though I did enjoy the more character-based stories - a little more believably as to their decisions/actions - though it did result in playing it safe story-wise for a couple of episodes.

I do wonder if it’s to do more with how PKD’s stories have become staples over the years - with lots of homages paid to them in other sci-fi stories - which then dilute PKD’s efforts themselves…

I enjoyed the last season of Black Mirror - but hope Brooker takes a few more chances in the next season - to mix things up and give a little more uncertainty (maybe more shock/surprise value?) - some episodes did feel a bit ‘samey’ as to what had come before.

I think this is certainly most of it, and something I remember reflecting on when I watched the first few episodes.

Yeah, it’s neat that they are all in the same universe, but it also contributes to the feeling of sameness.

I watched Season 2 over this past week. Overall, I don’t quite like it as much as the first. The running gag of Olaf fooling everyone with a flimsy disguise has worn thin by now. I’m not that taken with the darker tone, either. Now perhaps it’s just the writers staying faithful to the source material — I haven’t read the books yet, so I don’t know — but it rankles, regardless.

Those nits picked, the acting and direction and dialogue remain amazing.

I only watched season one, but I didn’t care for this series. Olaf feels like a fan trying to do an impression of Jim Carry and failing. Pretty much every aspect of the movie works better in my opinion.

Army of Darkness: The Medieval Deadit | The Terminator - Color Regrade | The Wrong Trousers - Audio Preservation
SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

Agreed, I enjoyed the movie but the series (what I saw of it) was really bad. The little kids were so annoying.

Not enough people read the EU.

You’re just denying the fact that when Jim Carry’s Olaf is disguised, he’s genuinely frightening, but in this he’s just a silly TV villain. The kind whose “evil plans” of wasting water without paying for it are foiled weekly by those darn kids.

Strike that, reverse it. Neil Patrick Harris’ performance is inconsistent, but much of the time, I find his Olaf genuinely evil. Carrey’s Olaf’s about as creepy as Mr. Burns, and I like Carrey’s Olaf.

I don’t care much for Jim Carrey in anything that isn’t The Truman Show.
