“Europa Report” (2013)

The found footage format is old hat these days but this nifty little film isn’t half bad.

Some chick who isn’t Shailene Woodley doing a British accent, a dude from The Wire, the villain from Ghost Protocol, Howlin’ Mad Murdock himself (no, not the proper one) and the Ice Truck Killer from Dexter fill out the cast along with a couple of other actors who might well have had other roles. They blast off towards Jupiter for science reasons and are never heard of again until their mysterious in-flight footage is found.

There’s a reason nobody’s aware of this movie (I just watched it and I’m still not entirely sure I’ve heard of it) and that’s because it sounds like a load of old codswallop. You can’t sell a movie like this these days without people thinking it’s derivative. It made more than its budget back but it didn’t do great business (sadly, “Uranus Report” will likely never get greenlit) - but it’s actually well worth your time.

A well-paced, nicely made, satisfyingly scripted bit of sci-fi… 3 and a half C-listers out of 5? Yeah, that sounds about right.

I stupidly mentioned I hadn’t ever seen a Trinian’s movie and found myself being treated to two in one (horrifying) evening.

“St. Trinians” (2007)

It’s a sad state of affairs when Russell Brand is the best thing about a movie.

0.5 out of 5.

“St. Trinians 2: The Legend of Fritton’s Gold” (2009)

I’m a nice person, I’m kind to strangers and animals, I don’t break the speed limit, I didn’t deserve to have this film inflicted on me. What the heck was everybody thinking when they made this?

Nothing out of 5. NOTHING, BLOODY NOTHING, DO YOU HEAR ME?

War For The Planet Of The Apes (2017)

Great movie that finishes off the trilogy of a successful reboot!

I guess I’ll end up seeing WFTPOTA (yikes) but the second one was really disappointing.

Disappointing? War is absolutely fantastic, though I don’t know if I can say you’ll like it if you didn’t appreciate Dawn.

I was bored to tears with Dawn whenever a human was on-screen. My review of the movie is in the thread somewhere but IIRC it was basically that all the human actors sucked.

Rise was so much better.

Well if your only problem was boring humans, you needn’t worry about War. But the film in generally is much more similar to Dawn than Rise. If you liked the ape stuff though then you should be fine.

(it goes War>Dawn>Rise for me, all good)

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)

Meh. Can’t believe how little I cared about the movie. The problem was with the human cast, which was a big ball of yawn. Nobody stood out and everyone was just uninspired. The apes were pretty good but every time a human was onscreen I felt like I was back on Zion instead of enjoying my time in The Matrix.

5/10

Jeez, 5/10? The humans are definitely a weak link but they really don’t have that much screen time. Apes are the main focus and the main thing to care about.

People keep suggesting the new Apes films to me, (I did see the first one with a group) and I have to keep reminding them I’m old school POTA. Some have no idea there was an entire series of films and two tv show spinoffs in the 60’s and 70’s.

The originals are some of my favorites. They did a smart thing with the new ones to base them off the sequels, rather than the original. The new trilogy is easily the best in the series since 68.

I’ve probably seen the full original movie but I’m not 100% I’ve seen it in one sitting. Never seen any of the sequels though.

Apes aren’t really my thing.

Considering the cash cow POTA merchandising turned out to be, I’m amazed Fox let Lucas walk away with the Star Wars merchandising rights.
Still the only action figure line that encourages kids to do horrific experiments on captured humans. Good times! 😃

I, David Blake. British movie which if you from UK and gone through the horrible benefit system because you was sick will really strike a cord with this. It’s really a good movie, but some scenes you really feel for it. Especially how life can really suck

Speaking as an old school Apes fan I love the new films. They’ve done a beautiful job of building toward the original Planet of the Apes.

Burton’s attempt can remain in the dustbin of history.

If this one makes enough dough, I imagine we’ll be seeing Taylor and his crew in a few years.
