Isn't this Blu-Ray HD-DVD thing a bit like the old VHS/Betamax format wars? One has to ultimately wait until the products come out and what ends up being supported to see which one is "best" and which one will end up winning.

THERE HAVE BEEN ATTEMPTS TO MAKE A UNIFIED FORMAT, BUT NEGOTIATIONS ALWAYS SEEM TO FALL SHORT. ONE COMPANY (AND THIS SOUNDED LIKE THE BEST IDEA TO ME) WAS TO USE THE "HD DVD" NAME ON BLU-RAY DISCS. YOU WOULD GET NAME RECOGNITION THAT WOULDN'T BE CONFUSING TO THE CONSUMER WHILE USING A "SUPERIOR" FORMAT DISC. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT THE HD DVD CAMP IS GOING TO DO IS RELEASE A DISC THAT IS HD DVD ON ONE SIDE AND STANDARD DVD ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DISC. I THOUGHT THAT THIS WAS A GREAT IDEA AS WELL.

It's basically the higher quality and space of Blu-ray verses the low price and high backwards-compatibility of HD-DVD which is fueling each format's claim to fame.

Dayv I read information about HD that side that standard player could play some layer of the HD DVD, while an HD DVD player could read all the layers, dont think it mentioned two sides. This is older information thou. I myself am torn between the two, HD DVD is cool because it should play, in some way, in DVD player. But BluRay hold more and, at least a while, are going to be in case to protect the actual disc.

Dont take any of my information to heart, I have not really researched the HD war in afew months, 6 or so. I would say that this will end up like the Betamax\VHS war.

Yeah, that's what I meant. They both have high capacity, just blu-ray has a higher capacity than HD-DVD.

Microsoft claims that there isn't as much of a difference in the capacity of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD as Sony would like for you to beleive. The higher capacity was only acheived in test conditions in a lab and isn't really possible for real-life use. Of course, they are now backing HD-DVD, so both sides in this aren't too credible, I guess. The best idea I saw was a player planned by Samsung, I think, that will be dual format and read both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. Sounds like a solution to me. At least whichever format wins, your player will support it.

I read about the same player that will play both HD DVD and BluRay, hope they do make it so I am not screwed with having to pick a format or buying two different player types.

I don't think HD-DVD will ever come out or it will just be a flop.

i believe that HD DVD is closer to the market then Blu-Ray is.

Yeah my choice would be Blu-Ray, but there are more major players backing HD DVD, not to mention that it should be backwards compatible with DVD players of today some how.

this format war is very similar to superaudiocd vs dvd audio which both failed because people still own cd players and many cd's. Whichever format is backward compatible with the current dvd market should corner the market, although whichever fits more data and is higher end quality is what the studios and users of the format will want. Never mind microsoft they are still not following the rules after their gov. anti trust lawsuit, they are still a monopoly buying out smaller company which is illegal in america for obvious reasons capaitalism being the formost amoung them. They are still hijacking people's computers to msn.com as their home page in their software windows, and I had to put several filters and blockers on my computer to prevent it and stop using internet explorer and use firefox.
It's bad enough that bill gates made an evil deal with mr. lucas which makes most star wars games come out on the xbox or mirosoft pc systems, and no others systems for most games.

Great point about the audio formats. True average customer wants simple easy to use, smart people want the good stuff.

The fact that HD-DVD is backward compatible pretty much settles the whole argument. Should anyone keep discussing the issue?
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

Better quality means higher quality star wars. That settles the argument!

what if they just called hd-dvd either regular hd-dvd or hd-dvd1, and then called Blu-ray either Super HD-DVD or HD-DVD2. I think that would aleviate any confusion for consumers. That way, they would know which was larger. Also, what about just building players that can play regular HD- DVDS and Super HD-DVDs, just like SVHS and regular VHS?

oh god no, look how long it took DVDs to take off. Sure I played out the big buck for the first Pioneer dvd-r drive but most people did not start using dvds until they were widely available in rental stores.

Who besides me has actually read the article on Slashdot? Fact is, 50GB Blu-Ray discs are still in the theoretical stage, so @ this point HD-DVD still has the edge in storage space. It also is a lot closer to market, since manufacturing plants only require minor retooling to produce HD-DVDs. That being said, I think that technology companies are in way too much of a hurry to get HD product to market; they should wait until HD is in a greater percentage of North American homes. This would give them the R&D time to perfect and possibly expand storage capacity. I'm in no hurry for HD, and would rather they worked the bugs out than put out 2 formats, one of which may be hobbled by technical problems.

Blu-Ray Attacks Microsoft, Microsoft Bites Back
Posted by Zonk on Friday September 30, @09:05AM

QT writes "Ars Technica has been following this week's next-gen DVD dramas closely. First, there's extensive coverage of the reasons why Microsoft backed HD-DVD, which was primarily inspired by mandatory support for copying discs to computers. The BDA, however, countered with an attack on Microsoft's reasons, and Microsoft returned fire. Richard E. Doherty, Microsoft's head of the media entertainment technology convergence group, said that 50GB Blu-ray disc are in fact many years away. Is MS playing games, or is Sony misrepresenting just how far along BD-ROM really is?" From the article: "HD DVD is proven to deliver 30GB capacity today, with the potential to deliver even greater capacity. The 50GB claim for BD-ROM discs is unproven and will not be available for many years to come, based on discussions with major Japanese and US replicators. Replicators not only do not have test lines running, they cannot even pre-order the equipment to begin evaluating this disc. They cannot judge the cost of these discs, or even whether they can be manufactured at all. Major replicators can mass manufacture 30GB HD DVD discs today and it's well understood that these discs will cost significantly less to manufacture than the lower-capacity 25GB BD discs." We previously discussed this topic when the announcement came out.

The fact is Blu-ray is boasting 50GB capacity "at launch," but there is no launch date specified. 50GB discs have been acheived, but only in lab tests. Also from blu-ray.com:

What's the difference between Blu-ray and HD-DVD?

BD-ROM
Storage capacity (single-layer) 25GB
Storage capacity (dual-layer) 50GB
Laser wavelength 405nm
Numerical aperture (NA) 0.85
Protection layer 0.1mm
Data transfer rate (1x) 36.0Mbps
Data transfer rate (movie application) 54.0Mbps (1.5x)
Video compression MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVC VC-1

HD-DVD-ROM
Storage capacity (single-layer) 15GB
Storage capacity (dual-layer) 30GB
Laser wavelength 405nm
Numerical aperture (NA) 0.65
Protection layer 0.6mm
Data transfer rate (1x) 36.0Mbps
Data transfer rate (movie application) 36.55Mbps
Video compression MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVC VC-1

Yes, it would be nice if Blu-ray won or if HD-DVD had the specs Blu-Ray does. I think one reason why companies are pushing to get next-gen dvd technology out is to make up for the money what they've been investing in it the past few years. I'm in the same boat as GundarkHunter. It seems a little too soon for a new media format. I don't own an HDTV right now (though that will change in the next 6 months I hope), and I'm just starting to get into burning on DL DVD media.

People still buy and watch movies on VHS. What are these people going to think when they go to Wal-Mart to find that their tapes are being taken off the shelves to make way for the new DVD media? They will definitely not be ready to adopt a new format, and rioting will ensue I'm sure.

But damn, would it be nice to author a DVD with 54Mbs of bandwidth at your disposal, instead of the seemingly-archaic 10 we have to work with now...

part of the reason why they are pushing HD media is because of the deadline forced on TV networks I think. The Us government has set a deadline for when all stations need to be totally digital. I forget when this has to happen, but I think that may be the reason.

Wait... that makes absolutely no logical sense... it must be just to make another buck.

Yeah that date at one time, for all HD broadcast, was early 2005. opps missed that one.
