King Kong: The Shorter Version (Released)

 (Edited)

Well, hi everyone!

After watching KING KONG in theatres back in Christmas 2005,
I couldn’t wait for this movie to get to DVD…

so I can shorten it…

I, like some, really found the movie unecessarily long and lagging… my butt really hurt after watching the movie…

So what I did was try to shorten lots of unessecary jibber jabber and different cuts… most of them are cut around
the beginning, the boat, and the native attack… mostly…

the movie now runs one hour shorter. Making it 2 hours and 7 minutes.

oh and by the way… I wasn’t too happy with the “love story” of Kong and Ann… it was alittle too dramatic for me…
so I changed the music and took the heavy sad mood out… making Kong more of a monster (as he was in 1933) than
a tragic “hero”…

whaddya think?

It wasn't really a "love story" so to speak. The bond between Ann and Kong was that of two lonely souls finding one another and their friendship.

I mentioned in the other Kong '05 thread that Kong never was a monster, but it doesn't really shake the public's perception of him as one.

ok I shouldn't have said it that way...

I meant I made the intimate sad-music scenes with Kong and Ann more 'neutral'... less heavy on
the drama/sad stuff... as if it feels like Ann is trapped in the island with Kong rather than she would
have liked to have stayed there with him.

so it could be more neutral when Kong dies rather than a gladiator sort of moment as well...

I like the idea of it being shorter, but I I think the bond between Kong and Ann was what made the movie work. It gave the movie emotion and drama. When Kong died it was a powerfully emotional moment, because Kong died trying to protect Ann from something he did not understand in a world that was unfamiliar because he cared for her. That is true companionship and friendship. And the movie got full marks from me because of this. I really don't know how you kept the emotional level up there without this key story point.

what really needed to be cut was the opening, start on the ship possibly !

Remember, Highlander, you’ve both still got your full measure of life. Use it well, and your future will be glorious.

An hour shorter? and it's still over 2 hours long?

Hated that movie--I sat through it wanting to like it, and a lot of parts I did like, the boat scenes I liked--anything the writer character was involved in was great. Though I agree, the love story was just stupid, maybe toning it down might bring out this "friendship" theme others have claimed existed, but I really thought it was just a bad love story. To me, the whole thing looked like another Titanic.

I'd love to see this. I actually felt bad for Kong in the 1933 film.

Lord Phillock I respect what you did with this movie and I am sure it is another fine edit.

If you cut out Jimmy, I'll be happy. Actually, I'm just going to do that myself.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

could you possibly add in charlie brown christmas music when kong and anne are ice skating in the christmas trees?

that addition alone would sway my opinion about the over-stuffed movie.
Author

haha.. well, the ice-skating is gone... in this version he picks up ann and then roars! And then the commander yells "Fire!" and they start shooting him and he runs away to the Empire state.

I haven't seen the 2005 version but I love the 1933 version. I would like to see an eventual edit that is jsut 90 minutes (or jsut a bit more) with just what was in the 1933 version, but also keep in the spider sequence from the 2005 version.

Just to clarify my comments on the film weren't really meant as an attack on this edit. Still sounds like a good job. I've been meaning to do an edit since I saw it in theater. Actually, I did do one based off of a cruddy bootleg file. It came out around 2 hours 15 minutes, but I haven't had the time to do it properly.

Well, Phillock, kudos on cutting out Jimmy! Damn, was that a completely useless character. There could have been some nice bit at the end or something, but no... Anyway, I still really liked the rest of the flick and would want it to stay, which is why I'll probably be doing my own edit after the EE comes out. I would like to check this edit out, though.

Believe it or not most of the extra scenes were on Skull Island.

It should have been truncated the moment that everyone got onboard the ship, since that was where the good film ended...

Yes, as I recall, I think I did...

and why IS there SO much junk in King Kong?

Just because PJ made LOTR (wich was long, but had lots of story to tell, courtesy of the Books)
then studio execs just think that if Jackson makes MORE three hour long films, they will also be as successfull as LOTR will be...

not so...

I would have been inclined to cut the whole dinosaur stampede thing. With it's **cough** 'special' effects and rather phoney physics **cough cough** jabba.

One article made it sound as if Jackson turned in a cut of the film at its current length, and the studio basically thought it was good enough so they didn't bother shortneing. PJ's own comments are that they wrote a two hour script and ended up with about 4 hours worth of material.

I think the length is due to the studio being lazy and not letting P.J. shorten it.
