Thanks to a link from klokwerk, I've managed to accurately subtitle all of the scenes in Japanese in this version. And, damn, this version of the flick is so much better.

Do you mean the original Japanese DVD? That would be cool, but if I recall correctly, it's jewel case-sized and not armaray case-sized, so the artwork would have to be altered.

As stated, there are English and Japanese soundtracks. There are certain scenes that were just in Japanese. That's how they were written, that's how they were shot, etc. Get my drift? This DVD features English subtitles for those scenes only.

No, it's cool, I can see where you would get confused. It is kind of confusing, now that I go back and read it. Sorry if it came off like I was giving you a hard time, you've a hard workin' guy for the community.

Yes, I have the original japanese DVD, just the one you can buy from sazuma. And, yes, you are right, it is a jewel case... It looks quite different from the other releases and should be a nice source for armary size cover...
If anyone is interested in scans, just give me a PM...

Early posts in this thread, offering to give out straight copies of the official Japanese release, are against the rules and have been deleted. The version with the custom English subs would class as a custom DVD, so it's OK to discuss, just don't talk about downloading.

OMG, I love this movie. Someone just pointed me to this thread. I wish I got here sooner.

I had gotten the screenplay book from my local library a couple years back and created a sub file from that for an Xvid version floating around. I don't speak Japanese or Mandarin (so as long as the actors stuck to the script then it's fine).

The only real discrepancy was the first scene in Takeshi's office. In the U.S. version (which is of course subbed for that scene), they either went off script, the scene was cut, or the subtitles were over simplified. I put it back to the original script's version for story purposes. Most importantly they refer to themselves as Yakuza now which I don't actually think is mentioned at any other point in the movie. You otherwise have the impression they work for the corporation and are not freelance thugs. Since Yakuza is Japanese you should hear them say it, but I don't, so again, my sub file takes liberties, but I am a big Gibson fan and felt his words were more important.

If anyone is interested in comparing the subs, here's mine:

Dr. M, that's pretty much spot-on for the subtitle track I created. I think I played with the first scene between Takeshi and Shinji a bit differently than you did, but the overall effect is the same, just some different phrasing and word emphasis.

I'll probably make a few different ones, but this is the first "work-in-progress" which is nearing the end.

I dig it. Goes very well with how Universal tried to market the flick.

The cover art is really nice. My only complaint is that the Japanese Cut of the film is actually just called JM. I can try to grab a copy of the original art if someone wants to try and work with that.
