I'm finally getting the OOT on vhs — Page 2

Oh no, the first SE set after they stopped specifying it was the SE! I’m so sorry.

Oh dang, so it’s really the special edition? Dang. I did want them but now I won’t have the OOT until I order again.

Yeah, I have that set, they’re the SEs. It was released in 2000 or 2001, and the box art was designed to match the Episode I box art. The OOT was never released on VHS or laserdisc with episode numbers on the boxes, only the SEs.

Basically, anything OT with a post-1997 date is the SE, with the exception of the GOUT (and even that still has the 2004 SE as the main feature on disc 1).

Not sure about the picture, but thanks for pointing out my typo. Fixed.

I find this site is a very good resource for identifying various releases down the years:-

http://www.swonvideo.com/

(it’s also run by our very own Video Collector)

and fellow posters on here should be able to help with any questions you may have about sets you may be interested in (as to whether it is a OOT or a ‘Special Edition’ release etc).

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

Yeah. That Struzan artwork is a beautiful cover up to an ugly content.

There’s no Struzan on those covers posted?

I thought it was his SE artwork, but cropped? Some ships may have been added and the colours look a bit wrong.

It’s a Photoshop recreation of the Struzan posters, like how the GOUT uses a Photoshop recreation of the vintage posters.

Yeah, they’re horrible. All Star Wars cover art has been pretty terrible since about 1997, but the Faces art was even worse than the 2000 art in my opinion.

To be fair, most DVD art is bad. I don’t know why they don’t just repurpose theatrical posters. Would be cheaper.

I would put this in my sig if I weren’t so lazy.

I actually thought the GOUT covers were pretty creative TBH but then again they’re mock ups of the posters and I am a sucker for original poster art. TBH I actually don’t think I have a favorite SW video cover design. I have mixed feelings about all of them honestly.

Not including 1997 though. Those are pretty beautiful. Even if the ROTJ poster blatantly uses a manipulated shot from ESB as it’s focal point. 😉

Yeah, they’re great for the most part. I should have specified that everything since after 1997 was terrible. I think the prominence of Chewy and Jabba on ROTJ’s poster really symbolizes that film’s lack of focus though.

Oh shit, is that what this is?

I randomly picked up that set at a Goodwill for a buck a couple years ago and completely forgot about it. Didn’t realize it was SE, but I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.

I mean, I guess the SW SE poster is alright, and ESB would’ve been pretty neat except for the weird ass Emperor image. ROTJ SE poster looks like vomit.

Yep. I think that set is from 2000.

Yeah, I was wondering about V. I knew it wouldn’t have ian in it so I wondered why he was on the cover art for V.

Author

Maybe it was to balance out the fact that the image of Luke and Vader on the ROTJ poster is actual from ESB. 😉

The funny thing about that is one is that the original painting actually used a different picture of Leia to paint than the mock-up does… but it’s still from ESB. Makes me wonder if it was some sort of weird creative decision to have all 3 posters have images from the other films.
