How about some updated banner images?

I like it, but I think the blue half should be more obviously blue (even if it's not 100% accurate).  I didn't notice it at first.

I'll make versions that are more blue, but I'll post the unadulterated ones as I make them, to confirm formats.

For example:

The side banner.

I'm using the example screenshots from Adywan's AVCHD, for you wondering.

UPDATED both posts with the exaggerated blue.

Ady sent me some bad ESB shots:

No need to exaggerate the blues, these were already terrible!

Are those ESB shots untouched or "blue-enhanced"?

I would suggest for these ones to change the text to something like:
"Sign the Petition for a proper restoration of the Original Trilogy on Blu-ray!" (which puts the point across that the blue-cast 2004 DVD was not a proper restoration).

The yoda image is incredible - really shows up the problem.

Nice work on those doubleofive.

I especially like how you 'sliced' the comparison images diagonally at an angle, as that really draws your eye to the problem effectively in a single image.

I was hoping someone would have suggestions for a better text.  I'll change the ESB ones to match your suggestion, at least.

The only suggestion I have is to stick to standard banner ad sizes. The banners I made back in 2003, while good, didn't get the wide adoption they could've because they were non-standard sizes. If a site owner can't fit a banner in their current layout, they won't use it.

Here are some guidelines to follow:

Also needed that.  Thanks Jay!

UPDATE: Here are a couple standard ones.  The others aren't uploading for some reason...

Bottom one may be too busy.  I had a lot of space to fill...

Man, I didn't realize you guys had run so far with my old 'Blu, not Blue!' line. I just did it because I thought it was amusing. :) I knew ImperialFighter had the line in his signature, but I'm happy that others dig it too.

But hey, anything that'll help drive the point home is great. Those comparison shots are amazing. Nice work, fellas!

Epic Win!

I'd love to see the same thing for On Her Majesty's Secret Service and pretty much any Disney film that got a platinum release besides the Little Mermaid (didn't use Lowry for that one). I think more attention needs to be brought to the fact that a lot of digital "restorations" change the colors and remove so much grain that the movie looks like HD video. I consider that altering the film in the same way as coloring a black and white movie.

Anybody up for an Anti Lowry Film "Restoration" facebook group?

Even Blade Runner had some recoloring issues on the achival versions. I kept my 1997 dvd for that reason despite it being so low quality.

As for the bottom one that 005 mentioned may be too busy, I think it is. At the very least, there is no need to write originaltrilogy.com/petition twice.

Although if someone wants to nitpick, the new petition here simply asks for the original versions restored, while the banner could suggest we want whatever version as long as the colors are proper. Some people unfamiliar with the films might think from the banner that the original versions were released with the wrong colors when that was actually one of the things the unaltered dvd's got right. I don't think it's a big deal but those who would call us "whiny fanboys" might use it as another lame response.

Right, I just liked Ripplin's "Blu Not Blue" line.  I can try something along the same lines with GOUT vs Adywan's AVCHD, but I don't have a clever line for it!

Ah, Knightmessenger threw up a very pertinent point there.

It seems I may have mistakenly believed that these banner designs were to encourage better-coloured versions of the 'Special Editions' of the OT on Blu-ray....as let's face it, that's definately the versions that GL will want to release first and foremost again.  And even though I didn't agree with a lot of GL's tinkering choices, I'd at least like the masses to see better looking versions of them this time round....

If that is the intention with these banners you came up with doubleofive, then as far as the layout of your long example here, might I suggest moving your Blu not Blue! lettering up so that it's positioned at the top instead (although Yoda's features may need lowered a little so that his eyes etc. aren't obscured too much in that central shot), and align your Sign the Petition for a proper restoration of the Original Trilogy on Blu-ray! lettering on the bottom left instead, while keeping a single http://originaltrilogy.com/petition/  aligned on the bottom right where you currently have it.

If on the other hand, you mean that you're going to try for a banner emphasising how we'd actually like a well-presented 'GOUT' version of the OT on Blu-ray, as opposed to the badly-coloured 'Special Edition'....then perhaps you could keep the Blu not Blue! heading, and just change the longest lettering to Sign the Petition for a proper restoration of the pre-Special Edition Original Trilogy on Blu-ray! instead.

Just some thoughts.

One other thing I'd like to point out is that I'm don't feel the picture is completely accurate after Adywan's miraculous fixes. I think it still looks too good with too much contrast. Now, I didn't see them in the theatre but I always had the impression these movies were always somewhat grainy without a lot of high contrast. In this shot, I don't think the hairs around Yoda's head should stand out that much nor should the white fog on the ground be that white.

Not only was this release oversaturated, darkened and colored wrongly, I think it also had contrast boosting applied and too much grain was removed. I don't want a 30 year old film to look like it was shot yesterday on HD video.
