(Help) Making a custom box set for Harmy's Despecialized Edition trilogy

Hello all!

Thanks to user ronwlim (http://originaltrilogy.com/user/ronwlim/id/16760) and looking through many pages of forum posts, I have come to my final choice for the box set I will be making.

However,

I did edit ronwlim's artwork to a custom design for myself. If you are reading this, man, I hope this doesn't make you mad or anything. No bad vibes are meant to be sent. But anyway, I may be able to print the inserts and print the paper that will go on the box, but I need a few pointers:
  1. I want a thin and sturdy cardboard opposed to card stock. Any recommendations of a cardboard that is like the 2011 Star Wars saga Blu-ray box?

  2. What would be the best paper for the boxset and method of putting the paper on the cardboard (referring to the box the 3 Blu-rays will be in and the outer slipcase)?

  3. I do not have an inkjet printer capable of printing onto a blank disc. If anyone has a printer capable of doing this, I am willing to pay for the supplies and shipping.

I can’t help you on 1 and 2 as I’ve not made, nor am planning on making a boxed set. But I’m sure others will chime in.

As for #3 - why not get a printer. They are in the grand scheme of things very low cost at this point. I upgraded my home printer to the Pixma 922. I wanted a home scanner for work purposes, copier for home purposes, and disc printing for Star Wars projects. 😉 I bought it on sale when it $75.00. But there are a few others such as the Pixma MG5720 on Amazon (being discontinued at $70). Save the cost of shipping and supplies and jump in with a printer that lets you play around with the artwork and discs. I’ve got to say aside from testing your burned disc - printing it is pretty damn cool. And the Plex glossy liquid defense plus disc are amazing!

I didn’t know they were that cheap. Wow. Only a couple of issues on my end: I’m so broke I’m in the negative and after this project, I usually never use a printer so it would sit around most of the time. Otherwise, it would be a good idea now that I know they’re so cheap

Sorry to hear that you are that broke. Sucks to be in that place. But It begs me to ask how you’re going to pay someone to print the artwork for you (plus there is a lot of trial and error with these projects). 😉 I’d hate for you to get some stuff shipped to you only for you to find out it needed to be edited in some way. Lastly the these DIY projects aren’t cheapest either and these projects suck up - especially considering how much ink disks and paper absorb. I think your going to find that getting your own printer will pay dividends in the long run. My wife complained at me spending $75 (heaven forbid) on a multi-function printer, and now she loves the scanning feature. Men aren’t always wrong…so far I was right with a universal remote, Tivo, and iPhones too.

It sounds hairy, but I’m willing to see what happens and roll the dice I guess. How I’ll be attaining money is via tax return. I always do that early.

It’s good that you made a good investment and your wife eventually like it. Well, a couple investments based on what you said

I see that you might have a user in the other thread that might help you out. That’s great! I hope the project comes out well for you. Hairy? No. Room for lots of screw ups? Yes. I’ll look forward to seeing your completed project. Some of the stuff that floats around on these boards is amazing. I wouldn’t dare to a boxed set - I’ve got my fill of just making Blu-Ray and DVD case covers.

As for the investments - through nearly 14 years of marriage I’ve done a few things right. Just a few. 😉

Best of luck with the project man. And may your tax return be generous.

I will be sure to post it completed. It will take a while, but will be worth it in the end.

I appreciate you kind words very, very much. Thank you for your help and here’s to 14 more years for you and your wife (raises imaginary glass) ^_^.

I’ve been working on my Box set for a month now, making changes etc. Currently I have the discs fitting into a box, that Slides into another box. Should have gone with a Book style, like the LOTR set.

Also, in retrospect, I think an even better idea would be to go to a pawn shop & look for a cheap used boxset & just reface it.

Remember, short controlled bursts.

That’s an intriguing and cost effective option. I’m taking the same approach for my box set (idk if I explained that well in my post). Three criterion cases in a box that slides into an outer case

I’ve been toying with the idea of making another Box set based off the Lord Of The Rings Set. The Box would open like a book.

close

Open left
open

Then open right to access the DVD. This set you have to slide out the Blu rays. But I think I would figure some other way.

Currently this is where I’m At with my Box set. Working on the Outer Shell. Doesn’t look like much, but just have to cover it.

Box 1
Box 2
Problem I’ve found is that the edges of the inner box were wearing out(the black), so I sprayed a protective coating, but this made it a little snug, so now I’m thinking of cutting 2 small half circles on either side of outer box, so you can grab the inner box and pull.

If you DIY, take your time, measure, measure, measure.

If it’s not one thing it’s another!

Remember, short controlled bursts.

Extended edition is the only way to go i own the blu ray so im familiar with that box set.

That should be quite the project unless youll use another LOTR box and paint it over
