Look up a faneditor named “Booshman”. He’s done a few things that I can honestly say are just as good as Selutron. I’ve had dozens of ideas over the years to also try and fix Superman 2, and since Booshman has the skills, I threw him some of my ideas, and he liked them.

Preview:

Supes flying off to go get dinner, instead of just walking outta frame with a ‘whoosh’ sound effect http://vimeo.com/43956069

Superman repowered. This one is very rough and the finished edit will look perfect. This was one of my ideas that’s been in my head for at least 7 years now. When he showed me this preview clip I had tears in my eyes cuz I was so happy to see it in real life and not just my head http://vimeo.com/32833584

And one of my favorites, his attempt at putting the ORIGINAL version of the Donner breakup scenes at the end as they were originally done in the TV edit of the film with Margot’s REAL voice and not a voice double (as the Donner Cut used for no reason whatsoever). Better score music was used here as well http://vimeo.com/112925923

I don’t know what this person was doing. But as far as your second question, I remember looking into this a bit and as far as I recall it was not determined how exactly it would end, just that it would not have been this kiss or the world-spin (as of course the studio would have pushed that into the first film). I believe Donner talked about the issue a bit in the credits for his cut.

I made my own cut which had the goal of changing as little as possible from the Donner Cut, except to remove obvious 21st century technology and a couple other things. Many, many people have tried to make the best cut out of the two versions. And I think all those projects are great. But if I’m going to watch a cut, it’ll generally be the Lester cut I grew up with. The goal for my edit was just to get the Donner Cut into a form that I find watchable, but I do not try to correct the ideas for the cut itself. This means:

Removed the terrible CGI at the start. The intro logo and graphics are from the theatrical release. Poorly done rectangle prison and 3rd Rock From the Sun planets were replaced with theatrical shots. I re-did the exploding rocket with footage from Superman I, mixed with the original model rocket shot, flipping and rotoscoped over the elevator from Lester. This was an early render: http://dai.ly/x2gpj3s

Removed mismatched Clarks from the bullet scene, keeping as much dialogue as possible: http://dai.ly/x2gq2vm

Put in the Lester kiss ending instead of world-spin. No one, apparently including Donner, knows what he would have done. But it wouldn’t have been the spin if he actually finished it, and it’s not watchable with the spin, the way the first film was completed.

i prever the donner cut excluding the ending. what selutron was doing would have been superior to the currant way the donner cut is right now

There are many impressive S2 fan edits out there, but sometimes I feel like they tinker too much. I REALLY like towne32’s fanedit for only ironing-out a few rough patches (especially the screen test footage and the ending). It’s really well-done – simple and effective (and my go-to version of the S2 now).

Of course, I understand the urge to tinker with these cuts, especially for dedicated fans (which I am) with film editing skills (which I lack!). For example, I wish the DC didn’t retain the shot of Zod levitating the shotgun. I believe there’s a fan edit that makes it look like Zod uses super-speed to retrieve the gun instead – that’s clever!

And while I like the memory kiss over repeating the end of S1, part of me wonders if the Supes/Lois storyline shouldn’t just end with the balcony breakup. Too depressing, I know… but narratively, it’s elegant.

Booshman did the super speed trick.

In my edit, when Zod says “A weapon of some sort” after the shot of the cop holding the gun, and the other cop sticking his head out of the car, I cut to Zod using his heat vision, the cop in the car trying to hide in the car (when Non approaches) and then a stock footage video I found of a similar looking car blowing up in a similar location. Then cut back to the establishing shot in reverse and then cut to the villains flying away. Oh, and those 2 cops obviously don’t show up anywhere in the entire Idaho scenes.

As for the ending. my edit uses the Lester amnesia kiss scene, but instead I changed the music so that it’s a happy moment when they kiss, and after they kiss I use the RIC line where Lois says “I won’t tell anyone who you are” while Perry is watching from his office, shrugs his shoulders, and walks away. Cue some NYC establishing shots for a sunset, fade to black. Fade in to the next morning and we go to the DC “pizza scene”, with some more revisions so that it seems like Lois still knows his secret and is ok with it, and they play along like 2 lovers with a secret.

“You know you’re really super…”

  • Clark looks at her with a cautious look like “Waitamimute”

  • Lois gives him a thumbs up and smiles.

  • Clark walks away and Lois starts typing.
