My wife and I are officially junkies. We just purchased tickets to the midnight showing of HP3 this coming Thursday. I'm gonna be draggin' ass on Friday at work.

Have fun. Though I'd rather be reading the fifth book at midnight. I've had it a year, and I've finally managed to sit down and start it. Don't feel too bad about being a junkie; when book six is released, I plan on standing in line for the book. Not looking forward to the movie, though. It's gotten good reviews, and I'm sure Gary Oldman does a superb job as Sirius Black, but the books keep getting more and more complicated as Harry, Ron, and Hermione progress through Hogwarts, so I feel the films may gradually lose quality (though the books do keep getting better, which is a plus).

You're right, now that I think about it. I was reading on Order of the Phoenix last night, wanting it to go a bit faster, and I remembered there were scenes in Goblet of Fire that could be cut after all. Since it had been about a year since I had read it, I had this insane belief in my head that almost everything was vital to the story. Ah, but at least it'll force people to read the books if they want the larger story, and that's not bad at all.

The thing about Goblet of Fire is that there's an awful lot of expository information in the book that provides a primer on the previous 3 books; that stuff can all be dropped for the film, although the current rumour is that there will be no scenes involving the Dursleys in the Goblet of Fire movie.
As for Prisoner of Azkaban, I think it's going to work well. Alfonso Cuaron has already shown his ability to work with kids, and has a unique visual style that suits the darker tone of the 3rd book.

Some reviewers have reported hearing several outbreaks of crying among children at sneak previews. Ideally there won't be too many really young ones at the midnight show I'm at tonight.

People who take their kids to midnight screenings should be shot! Fortunately, we have no midnight screenings here; we're playing it on 4 screens, and I'm working PROJECTION! HAPPY, HAPPY, JOY, JOY!

Sweet! I expect you to pull a couple of Tyler Durdens throughout the night.

Don't have time for that; it's on 4 screens, as is Shrek 2, and The Day After Tomorrow is on 3. I'm gonna be running my a$$ off.

Show up early or stay late and prep it for the next showing. Maybe obtain those nude shots of Cameron Diaz that she fought so hard to have kept out of the public eye and splice those into Shrek 2. Heh heh.

Killjoy.

Actually, seeing nude shots of Cameron Diaz might cause a dropout of my lunch. But that's just me. Not a Diaz fan.

Oh, and I really dug on HP3. Cuaron did a spectacular job and I would love to see him back for HP4 even though Newell is officially the director of it. Yes the film was much darker and grittier and, let me tell you, it works. The look and feel of Hogwarts and the surrounding territory is 100% different than the first two. The land is hilly and steep and even slightly uninviting and that's how my wife and I always imagined it. Everything has a creepiness to it which I would expect from a world of wizards and witches. And it makes all the CGI look that much better. The Quidditch match looks so much more realistic and believable. None of the CGI stands out like a sore thumb anymore.

Bravo Cuaron. You did a fantastic job.

Good to hear. I'm taking the kids to Shrek 2 tomorrow, so hopefully there'll be a staff screening of HP3 tonight.

Isn't that for kids?

Ummm... no.

The books are quite unfortunately shelved in the young adults section despite being longer and more intense than many of the "adult" books I've read in my lifetime. The first two movies are rather youth skewed (thanks in large part to Chris Columbus' glossy treatment of them), but not this one.

Yeah, they keep getting shelved in the juvenile section for some reason...yet they've gradually become more mature as Harry progresses through Hogwarts, though it's my belief that the series abruptly ceased being a set of children's stories some six hundred pages into Goblet of Fire, in that one-sentence paragraph where ______ is killed.

The books progressively get more mature so a kid can grow up with the stories. The fifth book would probably have to be PG-13 to keep all of its spirit.

Many people were surprised enough that Azkaban didn't get a PG-13 rating. I'm on the fence about whether it should have or not. But if this one warranted a PG, then the first two, by comparison, should have been rated G. It is darker and more violent. PG13... dunno. Higher rated than HP1 and HP2... definitely.

By the time HP5 comes along, none of our kid wizards will be virgins anymore. In HP7, they will be having Whomping Willow Sex Fests and the film will be NC-17.

I'm shuddering @ the thought. Reminds me of the "leaked" Fox memo about the R-rated version of AOTC.

what was that about, an r rated AOTC that would have been great, there is so much they could have done.

What this about a leaked memo, Gundark? I've heard people talk of how they wished there was an R-rated Star Wars film, but I haven't heard about this. Somehow, I can't picture an R-rated Star Wars film, especially when the flames on the dead stormtroopers were cut out in the 90s.

On the topic of Harry Potter, as I've read the books, I can't help but picture Anthony Hopkins in the role of Alastor Moody. Just something I was thinking on a little this evening.
