Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released) — Page 104

Doing head to head comparisons between lossy and lossless sources can at times be confusing, but even when the difference is relatively indistinguishable keep in mind the the mp3 format by it's design will eliminate parts of the the original source. That's one of the reasons I went lossless years ago and never looked back.

Of course you have to take loudness compression, source used, fidelity and a whole other host of factors into account-but at least you don't have to worry about losing anything.

Headphones are easier for critical listening, and in the case of doing any video work can b a godsend, provided you have some decent phones to work with. After years of film school and seeing everyone on-set (and even famous people now) with crappy pairs that have no detail whatsoever, I got fed up and tried to get something for both work and music.

The Sonys you have now Harmy are the upgrade for the old Sony MDR-150s. They have a decent bit of bass to them but overall are severely lacking in detail. The MDR V6 CatBus mentioned (also a similar model the 7506) are Sony's gold standard and have been favored by many in the A/V world for general work since the 70's. The design has never changed all that much, and they still hold up well today. (I auditioned the new model when getting some new phones last year).

What I currently use is good for both A/V and music, the Sennheiser HD380-pro, an upgrade to the old 280pro workhorse I used in college radio. These are very flat in response and much more comfortable than many monitoring headphones, combined with a very good range for highs and especially a clear defined low end. Thus you have little to no coloring of sound. The coiled cable is ideal for working, and they really don't require an amp so plugging straight to onboard audio works fine.

Didn't know that about mpc-hc. Does it not do the full HD codec?

My PC speakers are old Logitech 5.1s and like most PC speakers, you're never going to get very much out of them. Headphones for working and then home theater/music setup for the full effect.

I do need to upgrade my simple sound card, but overall if you configure everything right and have decent components, it should be fine.

BTW, the simplest way to listen to audio on a PC is the magical little program foobar2000.

Where can I find the chapter breaks for harmy's ESB and ROTJ despecialized (as text files or inline text on a web page)?

The v2.5 ANH .mkv file has the chapter breaks embedded -- the show up correctly in tsMuxer. But the other two come in blank.

Thanks in advance for anyone's help. (And, apologies if I'm missing some obvious place on the forums where this can be found; I tried my best to search before asking.)

Thanks for replying.

Yes, I've got ESB v2.0 (downloaded as an .mkv file), but when I bring it into tsMuxeR the "Custom Chapters List" field is empty (even with that radio button selected).

Same with RTJ.

On the other hand, the chapters from the .mkv of ANH 2.5 come in perfectly.

That's strange - when I put the ESB MKV in TS Muxer, the chapters work perfectly fine. But either way, here are the chapter times I used for ESB:

Wow! Harmy himself. Fantastic!

Thanks for going to the trouble of doing this. I do appreciate it.

And, congratulations on all of this fantastic work. It's really incredible what you've managed to do! As a fan with clear memories of hitting the Times Square theater in May 1977, I find it difficult to put into words what it's like to see the movies this way again.

Best regards,

Jordan

Got GOUT-sync ?

I'm seeing the STAR WARS title card appear at frame 689 instead of 688 like the GOUTs (NTSC/PAL).
It seems all of the reel changes are off by one frame . . . is it just me?

It might be a deliberate creative decision :)
Did you add .041ms delay when you mux the audio tracks, to compensate for the extra frame?

This is truly great work, by the way. I'm not just a hater

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

Is ABC's isolated score track the same one from the Imperial Edition DVD?

The talk hairy_hen linked is a great series of explanations for audio lay people. Fun that the speaker uses Decibel for playback; that's my software of choice for bit perfect audio.

One distinction I'm not sure the speaker makes directly but can be inferred in places, is that there is a difference between double blind A/B with inexperienced listeners of unknown content and experienced listening of intimately known audio, the latter of which is inherently more biased but is actually a better metric for music (really anything that's enjoyed repeatedly). Engineers like myself are generally taught that the more unbiased the testing method the better, and yet a truly double blind test in the former case is not fully capable of testing many things that matter, such as emotional engagement and long-term enjoyment (in gamer-speak, replay value).

Put another way, one may notice but not mind if some random film they watched once didn't look that amazing, but don't you dare mess around with Star Wars! ;) Watch the random film a few more times and the nuances and flaws become more noticeable each time. It's true for the plot and storyline, it's true for visual quality, and believe me, it's true for the audio quality.

All that to say, I have some good analog gear and the Despecialized Edition sounds pretty great, from the first time to the tenth time, and onward. hairy_hen did a brilliant job.

Is the PAL GOUT of by that one frame?
I don't own a PAL GOUT myself.
If I've understood correctly what others have reported, both GOUTs (NTSC & PAL) begin on 688
and remain sync'ed until 150.203

Harmy is in the news today.

Kind of hate to see this as it may raise flags with the powers that be who may then try to shut Harmy down :(

Especially when these articles pop up in financial sections...

They call themselves OTers, they are hackers on steroids!

So, a new book came out and we learned so much, and it is called, “Anguilosaurus, Killer of the Living”.

Okay folks, I understand the concern over Harmy "getting busted" with the publicity. To be honest, I simply do not think anything bad will happen to our resident Czech genius. Maybe, just maybe, this level of attention is something that these types of projects and preservations NEED. Let's bring this subject, since Star Wars is once again a hot topic to the uninitiated corners of worldwide media, to the FRONT. Counselors and group therapists always say to share your pain. Well, let's share ours. I highly doubt that any of this is going to cause a cease and desist order. Even if the Disney Empire, TCFHE, or Lucas himself tried to intervene in some way, it's just plain too late. The DEdamage is done.

So, I say let those articles keep popping up. If anything, it gives Harmy more initiative and purpose, and let's face it, the comment sections are fucking HILARIOUS to the point of wondering where the HELL these people come from.

It’s really sad when the “creative minds” behind something we hold dear are also guilty of its destruction.

No, you don't understand. Now that everyone know about DeEds, USA is going to invade Czech Republic, and send SEAL Team Six after Harmy.

I think they might send a team of actual seals over to get him. Like maybe elephant seals.

This gives new meaning to The Seventh Seal.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

Since it is usually wise to do the opposite of what Nearsighted Scrappile says, I think Harmy should go into hiding.

Author

So should we add a .041ms delay to the audio tracks, or am I jumping the gun here?

Author

I imagine one frame makes very little difference, but yes the audio did seem a smidge in front when I checked it. Probably just the placebo effect :)

I haven't made time to fully appreciate this yet, but thanks for all your work Harmy.
