Harmy's STAR WARS Respecialized Edition '97 - AVCHD and MKV Released — Page 4

I don't recommend that - it will re-encode the video and you'll probably end up with worse-looking picture than if you downloaded the AVCHD - read the NFOs for info about sound tracks - if you want to preserve the DTS-HD track (which is not on the AVCHD) you can mux it in from the MKV.

So I can just mux it into the AVCHD source using tsmuxer and output any format from there? I guess there is no reason to doubt tsmuxer's iso output now.

Thanks!

It seems I have a more basic problem at the moment. I cannot find any working d/l links. I will keep trying.

Harmy, do you plan to release a letterboxed 720p version ? It would be great to burn on a blu-ray disc.

Thanks a lot for all your incredible work !

Is there going to be an Empire Strikes Back and/or Return of the Jedi Respecialized Edition? If not, what is the highest quality version of the 97' films out there?

Because of Adywan's 97se reconstruction, an Empire Strikes Back respecialized is unlikely. As for ROTJ...

Nobody sang The Bunny Song in years…

Harmy said he would do it. He just needs someone to take care of the audio part, since the theatrical DTS is not in sync.

Yes. Adywan's '97SE version is great but it still has a lot of 2004 stuff in it and the color palette is very GOUT-like, so if someone synced the theatrical DTS to the BD, I'd do a Respecialized of both ESB and eventually Jedi.

I have a question about the colors for the Respecialized Edition(s). I understand that the colors for Star Wars Respecialized were kept the same as the Despecialized Edition as the 97SE was supposedly timed based on an IB Tech print.

However the colors in Respecialized have a "70's film" quality to them which is beautiful for a 1977 theatrical reconstruction but I'm certain the colors were not this way in the theatrical 97SE. I recall upon seeing it in the theater how amazed I was at what they had done to make it look like a more 'modern' movie. I'm sure the IB print was used as a starting point, but since the objective of the 97SE trilogy was to update Star Wars for a modern audience, it seems doubtful that they would seek to so closely replicate the original 1977 look in the way that the Despecialized Edition (and Respecialized Edition) has.

My question is; do we have any reliable sources for the color timing of the theatrical 97SE other than the statement that the IB print was somehow a reference? And, if such a source came to light, would you consider the Respecialized Editions worth the time of re-coloring to match the 97 theatrical look?

No and no. This was a quick fun project, redoing the colors on it would be a tedious chore.

The colors of the TeamBlu version are pretty close to what the '97SE is supposed to look like.  It also has the added benefit of never having touched the 2004 master in any way, so none of that version's weirdness shows up in color or contrast anywhere.

Author

Yeah, that's true! I'd definitely recommend that for any '97SE purists out there :-)

And TeamBlu did a great job upscaling the anamorphic SD '97SE broadcast, so you may be surprised how good the PQ actually is.

I thought that in the '97 SE, the Emperor scene was the same as in the original, which is not the case since the 2004 DVD... Do you really want the theatrical DTS in sync with the Blu-ray? The dialogue of the Emperor was changed, and I'm pretty sure that the scene is longer than it used to be.

Shouldn't you just do your Respecialized Edition and then provide it to the person that'll come forward to sync the theatrical DTS to it?

Oh, right, sorry, what was I thinking! I guess I could do it that way then but I need to know who's gonna do the sync first.

Author

If someone does the sync, then can you make 97 versions for ESB & ROTJ? Also, could you please make covers for the individual releases and the trilogy 97 set, like you did with the Despecialized edition?

Author

Also, are you ever going to do the 2004 and/or the 2011 versions?

Maybe.

To do what? The 2004 versions already exist on DVD and HDTV, and the 2011 versions exist on Blu-ray...

You want color correction for them? Is that it?

I just didn't know if there were plans to make those versions. I figured probably not, but I just wanted to know. How do I get the 2004 editions on HDTV? Just watch the 2004 DVD discs on them, right? :) Also, how many more times will George change the films again? (shudder)

You get them just the way you get other things on the Internet. There are HD broadcasts that you can find.

It's probably over for George now that he has completed his 6 movies and sold Lucasfilm to Disney.

Are there any GOUT synched '97 SE mixes floating around out there?  If so, would that be a solution for a ReEd?

Honestly I would be more than willing to do the sync myself but unfortunately I know little about the process :p

Author

Sorry had a brain fart about that ^  completely forgot the wampa scene (along with a few others) would pose the same problem as the emperor scene in that it's a different length than the original

I'm struggling to find anywhere I can get this. Can someone kindly PM me with any advice....thanks.

HDTV 2004 SE's?

Hmmmmm.  I'm assuming they're just upscales?

I got all excited once when I found an HDTV FOTR w/o the green tint, until I realised it was just a crappy upscale of the DVD.

Author
Time

No, they are definitely not upscales - the BDs come from the same master as the 2004 DVDs - the 2004 DVD master was done in 1080p and some HDTV stations did broadcast it in 1080i, so those are native HD (high quality HDTV captures are now available on myspleen).

And there were native HD broadcasts of LOTR as well but only TTT was shown in the EE version - so the EEs found online were usually 1080p for the theatrical scenes and DVD upscales for the extended scenes.
