...what am I supposed to do now?

Looks like, as with Star Wars Trilogy on home video, they boosted the heck out of the brightness for the darker scenes.

IMO, if any of us need to watch a brightness boosted version of Halloween because we're using an old analogue TV, we probably aren't going to be using a BD quality version of it ;)

I love Criterion and greatly respect the work they have done.  Some favorites include Dazed and Confused, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Kicking and Screaming (1995), The Last Days of Disco and Metropolitan.  They are not gods however and do sometimes suffer from limitations of what they are given.  The color on The Unbearable Lightness of Being for example, is not the best and some estimate that Warner actually did a better job.  It's debatable, but you have to weigh each transfer on its own merits.

Disclaimer: this project is, as announced, about color regrading the BD using the 1999 THX DVD as color reference. And this is what I'm doing - actually, it's almost done, waiting only for extra soundtrack.

If there is some interest into the BD ColourMatch'ed using the Criterion Laserdisc, I could always start a new project...

And I love Criterion as company; they did always excellent jobs - I'm taliking about their laserdiscs only; if there are some release less than perfect, it's understandable and forgivable - think about all the other companies, and I think you will agree with me.

But Halloween Criterion Laserdisc, color wise, has some potential; the contrast boosting is not the only feature; infact there are many interesting scenes with vivid colors and correct contrast and/or brightness, quite different from the BD and/or the DVD; if they have the *right* colors will bring to another discussion that I'd like to not conduct here, to not derail the thread... (^^,) so I invite to continue the eventual futher comments about the Halloween Criterion laserdisc into the appropriate thread about wrong color grading.

Hi Andrea,

congratulations on one more fantastic project!

I only have one suggestion/request: should this one be a BD-50 to keep the video at the highest quality?

On The Thing and The Matrix the video encoding wasn't such a problem because the original discs were already very filtered and soft. But on this one is a new transfer using high quality elements and we'd like to preserve it as untouched as possible.

I'm afraid a higher compression rate would affect the transparency on the new encode.

Well, it's just some thoughts to consider. I trust you know how to handle it the for the better.

The original BD video is around 22GB; even with eventual five+two soundtracks, the space left for video on this project will be around 20GB, more than enough for a 1.5 hours movie - compression will be around 30mbps, if I have calculated it right.

Would just like to say that this is incredible... one man alone is doing what a major publisher could not... twice. A team of people with a ton of money behind them failed were you succeeded.. that sir is incredible. I thank you for your effort.

CP, thank you very much... this kind of post, like many others, keeps me going on with my projects!

Back to the project: stamper sent me the central channel of a french 5.1, and it's pretty much the same of the mono soundtrack; I *overlaid* it to the isolated score, and the result seems better than the central channel alone; I'm still working on it, further sync is needed.

During this work, I listened better to the isolated score; John Carpenter is a great composer of minimal electronic music; there is a piano track that reminds me the atmosphere of horror video games like Silent Hill...

Forgot to mention: the BD and LD commentaries are different...

Could not?

I'm sure they could release the 1999 revisionist color timing on Blu if they wanted to.

Unless you're talking about the 5.1 folddown mono.

I cannot wait to see this.  Thank you so much Andrea for doing this.  This is going to be stellar and amazing.  I love the THX color-timing and wish they would have just released the Blu-ray that way.  I understand, but still.... at least we have a man in Italy who can get the job done right.  Thank goodness.

Yeah all right they could.. I've been wondering why this happens, it's not like it's hard to find out what the fans are looking for, a couple of minutes on a forum and they'll all tell you. I know Dean approved of the 35th and all that but still...

Instead it's left to one fan's laborious effort for no money. Once again, thank you Andrea.

But if they had released it as the 1999 timing, people would complain that it wasn't the original theatrical version ;)

Much like a certain trilogy...

I'm a fan and (like many other fans I'm sure) I'd have been extremely annoyed if the new BD had used the revisionist 1999 timing. I just wanted the colours to be as close as possible to what was on the screen in 1978. So, needless to say, I'm overjoyed with the BD colours as they are.

That being said, the best thing of all to have is choice and since studios rarely provide that then I'm more than grateful for projects like this. :)

Star Wars creates fans.
George destroys Star Wars.
Fans destroy George.

True, the outraged fan posts are probably more prevalent because those were the ones left wanting. I probably shouldn't extrapolate my own views to all fans, for me though the atmosphere is somewhat lacking in other versions to different extents and I'm so glad to have found this project.

Up until recently I didn't even know there was such projects, it sounds like such an ordeal for one man to take on but reading through the entire thread I'm surprised at how quickly the video was colour corrected. Can't wait till it's finished!!

Speaking for myself only, I believe every popular film like this has longtime fans, just like "Star Wars", who would just want to have well done releases so that those longtime & casual fans can get the product they like and want.  With all the double dipping studios do anyways, there is NO real reason they cannot do it all at once.  Regardless of how the studios paint it ........ :)

PROJECT UPDATES

The laserdisc soundtracks (digital mono - you could find it here - analog isolated score and commentary) are ready, and in sync with the BD; french center channel - that is comparable, if not equal, to the mono laserdisc soundtrack - is in sync, too.

I thought to release the mono and isolated score as PCM, while the commentary as AC3 - 384kbps will be overkill, maybe 192kbps is more than adequate.

Now, I only need italian, german and spanish soundtracks, so I could release the project! Help will be really appreciate!!!

Yeah, I've only watched the 1999 a couple times, but I think I like it a lot better so far...though some scenes are barely different, and some of the blue scenes might be a little too blue...

But that's weird that they'd make such a huge error over the mono soundtrack. That's the only way I ever watch the movie.

I will always be appreciative to Anchor Bay for the THX, even after the disaster of the first 1997 DVD which was horrendous beyond belief.  The 1999 THX 2-disc edition really made good on that mistake.  Other than that, it's been a long wait for an HD version of it.  There's always been something I didn't like about each subsequent release.  And THX blue is like cowbell... we need more.

Wish I could find the Italian, German and Spanish soundtracks...

Small bump. Hope you can find those foreign language tracks. Unfortunately, the Anchor Bay releases are English only.

Worst case scenario, we can always mux them in later when they surface.

I'd like to obtain them BEFORE release; with all the soundtrack needed, I could calculate the best bitrate for the video... just three languages, c'mon guys, search'em out & find'em all!

Anyone knows if they exist on foreign DVDs?

Andrea, I'm uploading German DTS-HD MA 5.1 and DTS 2.0 tracks that I've synced to the 35th Anniversary BD.  I'll PM you with links when they're done.  Thanks go to The Aluminum Falcon for letting me know that you needed German audio.

Wait! Another user wrote me that the quality of this DTS-HD MA 5.1 is not excellent, and only the DTS 2.0 is worth to download. So I need only DTS 2.0. Or... as Stamper sent me the center channel of a french 5.1 soundtrack, and it sound suspiciously similar to the laserdisc PCM mono, maybe the german 5.1 center channel will sound the same... further investigations are needed...

Thanks go to The Aluminum Falcon for letting me know that you needed German audio.

Well done, TAF!

Chewtobacca, I'm warning you... you must be careful in the future... you should subscribe to all my project threads... (^^,) (^^,) (^^,) well, at least to the ones you like!
