The differences can be quite subtle, depending on the scene.

I've finished the ColourMatch lossless video, and it looks GREAT! Perfect? Well, no, but really close to the THX DVD... very very much close...

Now, when all the soundtracks will be available, I'll capture the laserdisc mono soundtrack, plus the commentary and isolated score, then I'll finish the project.

Meanwhile, if someone who's able to build up a BD menu wants to step in...

Sounds very exciting. No idea you were so far in on the project. I hope you are able to get those soundtracks soon. The mono PCM is floating around, though I'd understand if you'd want to capture it yourself.

Thanks to everybody for supporting this project!

I'm still trying to find the missing soundtracks, but they are all multichannels, and I WANT only the mono... at this point, even a capture of the VHS soundtracks are moe than welcome...

Today I'll capture the laserdisc soundtrack; I know DoomBot worked on it, thank you! But, with a direct comparison between the laserdisc and BD video, I could sync with a frame precision, and, as I discovered there are TWO frames of difference between the BD and the DVD, probably the same is for the laserdisc, hence the sync problems noted by some users here. Plus, the isolated score and the commentary soundtracks will be captured as well.

I repeat my request: I'm looking for someone who's able to build Blu-ray menus, that want to make a BD menu for this project (and maybe others); it will be cool to have a simple menu at the beginning, that will let the viewer choose the soundtracks and/or subtitles... not mandatory, but an improvement over a "straight" release - but I must admit I love this laserdisc-like approach of my projects... you put the disc into the player, and the movie starts immediately... ah, how much I miss those good ol' days of laserdisc viewing...

Well, back to the present days; here you are some screenshots of the ColourMatch'ed BD - top DVD, middle CM, bottom BD:

Is the final result perfect? NO! But this is the best compromise, retaining all the BD resolution, and most (often almost all) DVD color grading.

Hope you like it!

Today I finished to capture all the laserdisc soundtracks; the PCM mono soundtrack and the commentary and isolated score on the analog soundtrack - note: when you capture analog sound from the laserdisc, REMEMBER to press the audio button for EACH side... I discovered that after I captured the first side right, and the other three wrong... (^^,)

Tomorrow I'll put them in sync with the video.

Still thinking where I could find the italian, german, french and spanish mono soundtracks, if they exist...

Excellent work, Andrea.  Don't worry about the menu issue, as many like the film to just start up straight away.  I for one will just be glad to have the THX color in HD for the first time since its 1999 release.  This is rather extraordinary in itself without asking you for so much more... those screenshot comparisons really illustrate the difference in color.  Amazing.  Maybe next year you can consider adding the extended cut (television version) for those of us who are fascinated by the alternate scenes.  It's an oddity, but one worth preserving in my estimation.  The new BD has sorta bumped those scenes to HD (though not true high def) and though they don't possess great sound, I think it could still be pretty awesome.  Thanks for all the hard work on this project.  It really is going to be incredible to behold.

Thanks Flexicon9!!!

Right now I've been listening to the isolated score, and I thought: "if I can't find other languages' mono soundtracks, maybe I could take the central channel and *overlay* it to the isolated score..." Am I mad? I mean, more than what actually I am...

Sounds like a cool concept.  Isolated score projects like the one DJ worked on for Empire usually rock.  I'd be interested in hearing those tracks in other languages, too.  I'm sure many fans would appreciate the effort.

35 Years of Terror Convention in Pasadena, CA starts tomorrow... Annie and Lynda will be there, as well as most everybody who has ever been in the Halloween franchise.

My 2 cents: a menu is not necessary. Your other releases have been perfectly all right without them, and they might end up taking up room that could be given to the movie or alternate audio tracks. Of course it's up to you, but I think people are pumped enough for this project, as is.

Sent you an MP with the french mono dub link. Let me know if you want the french DTS center channel to adjust to the Criterion M&E track. Perhaps it would result in a much better french dub than the current mono one.

First of all, thanks again to all; it's really appreciated that someone is interested in this project!

If the french DTS center channel is music-free - i.e. only dialog - it could be interesting to try it; let's experiment, OK? Send me the link, and I'll work it out to *overlay* it to the isolated score.

Any help about this procedure will be welcome, as I've never done it before...

WARNING!!!

...we have a problem, folks! I've been working at laserdisc soundtrack sync, when I discovered something important...

...what am I supposed to do now? Pretend that I discovered nothing, and continue the project as it was intended lately (regrading the BD with the 1999 THX DVD colors)? Regrading the BD using the laserdisc colors, as I intended to do from the beginning? Look at all the shots in the movie, and decide that if two (or three) have the same colors, this is the one to use for the final result? And what if all three are different?!? Maybe I could release two versions, the first with 1999 THX DVD colors, and the other with Criterion Laserdisc colors...

I'm postponing my laserdisc soundtrack sync until a solution will be found - infact, if I have to use the laserdisc as color reference, I should recapture it at full resolution... I made low resolution captures because I needed only the audio, not video - or, at least, it was what I thought before discover this...

Should we make a referendum? (^^,)

Andrea, the laserdisc is too bright.  The THX has the proper level of brightness.  I think you should stay with the THX DVD colors and brightness.  That's just my opinion, but judging from those screen comparisons the laserdisc just doesn't look right; too contrasty and blown out.  Where's all the blue?  The laserdisc looks as bright and starry white as the Divimax and 2007 BD which lose a lot of atmosphere and color.  The THX should be the template for this restoration.  If a separate Criterion project has enough support, then maybe that should remain a completely different battle as you've come so far already with the THX.  The work you've done looks great and it would be such a shame to change it.  Based on those comparisons you've just posted, I'd pick the THX DVD every time.  It's up to you man, but that's just my 2 cents.

Keep to the THX, and in the cases where the blue is gone like the first cap, keep the blue from the laser.

Dear Andrea, I believe that the general consensus is that the THX color timing is the one worth pursuing. Though the THX is probably not completely accurate to the 1978 color timing (in fact it may be quite revisionist), many seem to agree that it looks aesthetically the best. It seems using this timing would please most people.

The laserdisc, while possibly more accurate, does seem a bit brightness-boosted. Also, the colors are not as rich and vivid as the THX release, which all of us seem to love so much.

I'd recommend just sticking to the timing of the THX. Only do a second release if you really feel like it, but let the second definitely be the LD-based one.

...but the boobs are better lit on the laserdisc... OK, ok, I'll continue the project with the THX as color reference... but a second version using the laserdisc as color reference could be interesting nevertheless!

Ehi! Don't be so rude! This is a serious thread! Infact, it should be called Halloween [spoRv] Bright Boobs Edition! (^^,) (^^,) (^^,)

IMPORTANT UPDATE

The laserdisc mono soundtrack, commentary and isolated score are ready!

Now that all the main soundtracks and the video are ready, the project could be finished in just a day or two... BUT... I want to add the foreign languages, so I'm putting it on hold until the needed soundtracks will be found! Don't hate me, please, this is only the mission of the project, as you could read in the first post.

Stamper has provided the french mono track, and probably will send me the central channel of a 5.1 soundtrack to overlay it to the isolated score.

So, do you want this project be finished ASAP? Then do your part, and help me to find out the remaning soundtracks - german, italian, spanish; subtitles are needed, too, but are not mandatory.

I didn't mean to say up there that such a project would be useless, btw. If you're willing to do two projects of the same movie, Godspeed sir... it was only if you needed to pick one that I would say the THX should be the only project.
