Idea: HD restoration of the Phantom Edits..

 (Edited)

I’m working on syncing the HD video off of the blu rays and extract the audio  phantom edits and sync it.  I don’t know if anybody is interested or not, but if you are, well that’s cool.

I'm interested.

But surely the title of this thread should be HD Reconstruction Of The Phantom Edits?

The edits weren't originally in HD and lost to time.

They were VHS quality, reconstructed using DVD sources in SD and what you are proposing is another reconstruction using the blu-Ray as a source.

Will you be using 2012 elements like the CGI Yoda or will you be trying to keep it as close to the original edits as possible?

I'll be using the new yoda.  It's an edit, no reason to have one that looks like shit for no reason

Creepy Puppet Yoda will get you for that comment.  I'd sleep with one eye open from now on.

So it's not a restoration or a reconstruction but rather a Special Edition.

This sounds interesting.

Just keep in mind that The Phantom Editor pulled a few visual tweaks in his edits.

In Episode II, during the early scene in Padme's apartment where Obi-Wan and Anakin promise to protect Padme, I remember that he added someone walking across the frame in the background.

Good luck!

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

I don't see the point in reconstructing things that aren't noticeable.  And yeah I guess it's a special edition.  If you want the crappy yoda and the low quality knock yourselves out.

This won't end well.

Sigh, I've already lost my patience about posting updates here, and I haven't even posted any yet.  Have fun with your word games.

Two out of three people are interested, and the third (me) is a known CPY lover.  Relax.

I'd rather just lock this thread, I regret ever posting it.

We have registered an interest, asked questions and sort clarification.

Calm down and get a bit of perspective will yer?

I hope to read more about this project after you have stopped voguing.

I'm glad you did, because it's great to hear from you again, Possessed.  I would sync the BD to the edit using Avisynth, but any significant effects shots would have to be recreated.  The idea makes sense to me: you want the cut itself in HD because of how it plays out and don't care about small details, such as which Yoda is present.

I wouldn't bother syncing the audio.
The original Phantom Edit kind of lacked audio-wise (harsh cuts and pops, and the like.)

If you're taking the time to make the same cuts, I would suggest doing the audio anew as well.

The internet is serious business, indeed.

I can't fathom why anyone would want the first Phantom edit in HD.  L8Wrtr, Q2 (thunderclap), and hopefully soon Seciors' version are all FAR superior to the Phantom Edit.  The amount of Jar Jar in it is enough to discard it.

I think it's obvious why someone would want to have The Phantom Edit in HD.

This website is about enabling memory and recording film history.

The Phantom Edit is as far as I know the first Star Wars fanedit so it makes as much sense for people to want that in HD as want the OUT in HD.

The OUT in HD would not be the theatrical experience, it's still a home cinema experience but it would be the best currently possible home cinema experience.

Similarly a HD presentation of The Phantom Edit wouldn't be the original experience which as I explained earlier was edited using VHS sources but it would be a best possible home cinema experience of that little bit of fan history (which is why I asked about the Yoda puppet which does change that to a degree).

As for Jar-Jar some people like a little bit of less OTT Jar-Jar in their edits.

I'm rather fond of the Slumberland take on him which actually made me laugh for the first time.

As I've said elsewhere I dream of an edit which keeps Jar-Jar but makes him work and while The Phantom Edit doesn't do that it steps in the right direction.

I agree with this, btw.

Good point, I might not even do the phantom edit.  Mainly I want to do attack of the phantom.  It's my favorite fanedit as it removes much of the flaws but without it feeling chopped up and gutted.  I like Q2's Fall of the Jedi trilogy, but they don't feel like full movies and they move too fast.

Cuz whoever said something about the slumberland edits I agree they were awesome, and seeing those in HD would be sweet.  Does anybody know if the stereo track in his edit is pro logic compatible? Because I usually prefer that anyway, I downconvert files before I burn movies to watch them.  But since his only has a stereo track, I hope it's not just a downmix without dolby surround capabilities

I'm a whoever... at last I've made it to the big time :-)

I guess they do move a little fast but that's how I like my Prequels; take as much of the crap out of them and get them over with.

I am definitely for an upgrade of attack of the phantom though.  Despite the AWFUL video quality of the original SD version it was still enjoyable.

By the way, Possessed, if you haven't seen Spence's version of Episode 2 you should.  I think from the way you described things you would like his version.
