HBO Star Wars preservations (a Work In Progress) — Page 4

Awesome. That doesn't look bad at all for a 30 year old tape. Noticed any unique pan/scan?

It's identical to the time compressed Laserdisc master as far as I can tell.

PM me your address, and maybe I can get the DVD's shipped out to you this weekend?

Now that we have the proof a few posts back, how much of the often quoted paragraph from the former davisdvd.com web page about the original 1982 VHS/Beta release has been "mythbusted"??

"What You Didn't Know:  Despite popular belief, this was not the only transfer made of Star Wars. At some point, a second fullscreen video transfer was created from a 16mm flat print source. Since an anamorphic (2.35:1) 35mm print had been reduced down to a flat (1.33:1) 16mm print, this 16mm source featured different pan & scan decisions made during the print reduction. One main difference in this transfer was that Luke's macrobinocular POV shot of the Banthas was squeezed to actually show the Tusken Raider walking to the side of the frame. This video transfer was only shown on HBO and was never offered for sale or rent."

Yes, there are two different transfers (or at least different versions of shots from basically the same transfer??) most noted by the "squeezed" macrobinocular shot. However, as this shot was in the 1982 NTSC LD and all pre-THX PAL VHS pan and scan releases, the last line quoted is incorrect. I cannot comment on the 16mm flat print source statement.

(Once I get back my ITV broadcast DVD, I will post a picture of a third macrobinocular shot for info......)

There is probably a grain of truth in there somewhere that has become garbled over time.

Airlines used 16mm for in flight movies didn't they? Not sure what year video made inroads into that market. The next time a "flat" print pops up on Ebay, I'll have to pay more attention to the screen shots.

The guy replied and sent several high-res scans. There's no doubt someone could come up with a great HBO DVD cover using the pages he scanned.

He is very nice and also very interested in the preservation work.  He also has a 16mm copy of Star Wars that he sometimes shows in private screenings.  If we have any members in France, maybe you can meet him in person and go to one.  I gave him a link to our site, so maybe he'll join and give us a look.  He sounds like a wealth of info and sympathetic to our cause.

Here are the files he sent;

Photobucket downsized them a touch, but they're still very good.  If you need the originals, PM me with an email address that accepts large attachments.

Hi everybody !

I am the "guy" and I thank you to welcome me among the members of your circle.

As much as my schedule allows it, I will try to take part to your discussions which are of great interest for me. As an early fan of the original trilogy (I was born in 1972), I am still hoping Lucas will change his mind about it...

I should be back soon around here !

Thank you for your enthusiasm :-)

Bob (Baudime)

P.S. : I own super-8 copies of the three original Star Wars movies (not 16mm). They are in English, widescreen, and stereo : no special editions, no additional FX or scenes. Just the original as we watched them back in the 70s and 80s.

Welcome to the forum.  I hope your stay is enjoyable and enlightening.  There is plenty to learn and appreciate about a place like this....even during disagreements.  I, personally, look forward to any additional knowledge and experience you bring with you.

Cheers!!!!

Sorry about being late on the game, but welcome TKF821! It's great to have another contributor.

That sounds utterly fantastic! Do you have some way to transfer those, especially the original Derann of Star Wars? A member named Puggo has already transferred a 16mm of Star Wars, but your super-8 should have less fading. Apologies for my nosiness, but how are the colors on ESB and ROTJ?

Agreed. The shots look pretty nice SilverWook. This is turning out to be a cool preservation.

^I was hoping somebody would suggest that but I didn't want to be the one to!  Please take this idea into consideration.

Got the captures from Silverwook. I'll work on piecing together a composite when I get some time.

Still looking for the original HBO intro to SW (including the HBO flying letters)

Don't know if anyone is still following this, but I lucked out in finding yet another Beta tape from roughly the same era.

I asked the seller nicely to separate it out from the huge batch it was in. (Along with a "video rental library" Fox tape, for which I needed the unique case to replace the broken one from my '82 SW Rental Beta.) I don't need another pile of old tapes cluttering up the house again. ;)

The tape arrived yesterday, and it appears to be in very good shape. The case it came in really kept the dust out. The homemade cover seems to be a video store flyer announcing the release of SW on video back in '82. Too bad it's been cut up to fit the case.

If I don't get a hernia from hooking the Betamax back up tonight, I'll let you know what I actually find on the tape. Keep your fingers crossed!

Interested to hear about this and how it looks via Betamax

I've pretty much finished building my new editing rig, so I should be able to get this project going fairly soon. I don't guess anyone has run across a nice copy of the original HBO/SW intro

I'm willing to pony up to help get a copy of the intro that's on Youtube.

I guess I should just do that. Don't want the guy to change his mind and lose the one chance I have to get it. I've spent more money on stupider things I guess.

I've cleared a couple projects and I'm moving forward with this now. I'm just going to use the youtube 480p of this and clean it up.

Unless someone comes up with another copy or feels like paying that youtube user "for his time" this will have to do for now.

How much did they want to make you a copy?

$15. It's a small amount, but I just can't do it because I'm kinda broke and on principle.

I also wonder how good of a copy the guy could make. I have no idea what his source is like or his ripping skills.

I think I can make this look passable, and I kind of want it have a little "age" to it anyway.

The Youtube compression looks pretty ugly on my tv. Is there a better source for the HBO opening out there? Maybe the static text screens could be recreated, (then "aged")  and just use the Youtube clip for the voiceover audio.

I'll pony up five bucks if someone else will. ;)

Looks promising.

Is there a need to clean any of the opening seconds of the movie? You can go to the Beta or the LD capture right after the PG rating screen fades to black.

No, just a test to see what it would look like.
