I just won this set and I am waiting for it to be delivered.  Is there any need in projectland for the 5 films to be captured?

The nice thing is they were all done in SP mode.

😃

The set includese the following 5 movies:

Godzilla vs Gigan
Godzilla 1985
Ghidrah the Three Headed Monster
Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla
Son of Godzilla

Raw DVD5s of Gigan and Mechagodzilla would be nice since I don't have the Starmaker LDs and my tapes of those particular transfers are EP.

So, a new book came out and we learned so much, and it is called, “Anguilosaurus, Killer of the Living”.

Are these different English dubs from current releases?

They could be used for patches on preservations (recreations) of original releases, credits, scenes, and so forth.  Since they are in SP mode, it makes them of greater value than those done in EP.

I have raw .avi's of  Terror of Mechgodzilla, Godzilla Vs. Megalon, and Godzilla Vs. Mothra ..... these are EP mode unfortunately but the tapes themselves were in great shape.  The files sizes are big too.

No, but the pan and scan jobs are different from the Power Multimedia/Cinema Shares 16mm versions (referring to Gigan and Mechagodzilla). There are some missing dubbed bits that don't appear in the Sony DVD version of Mechagodzilla that appear in all other copies (Eiko screaming at the refinery and Kuronuma's "Move over!" in reel 6). The Sony version of Gigan's dub is also a complete synchronization disaster.

So, a new book came out and we learned so much, and it is called, “Anguilosaurus, Killer of the Living”.

Within the next few weeks I'm going to start the capture process on these.  Just wanted those interested to know.

I just started checking this box out and mine are all in EP mode as well.  :(

I'm really bummed as I didn't realize there might be 2 different sets.  I did find out that a second set, like this one, has Son Of Godzilla instead of Godzilla Vs. Megalon.  I do not know if it is in SP or not.

Weird and weird.  Does anyone know if there even WAS an SP mode Anchor Bay release?

Thanks,

Shawn

Anchor Bay did put out SP versions IIRC, but apparently they had to be "special ordered" (by the retailers)? I have found tapes (not these ones) from Video Treasures/Starmaker/Anchor Bay that have a "Duplicated in SP Mode" sticker on the back.

And I compared that auction to another auction - the tapes in the other auction definitely have smaller tape spools. I do think that the auction you just posted is the SP versions - even though they DON'T have a slapped-on SP mode sticker on the back. Jetrell, what do you think?

Alas, Anchor Bay started out as one of those bargain basement video labels.

Do the spools on the tapes in this auction look "fatter" than yours?

Yes, they do.

:)

It appears the Godzilla vs. Megalon had an SP counterpart as well but it will have to be purchased separately.

Back to the drawing board, LOL.

Awesome, then that's the SP set. It ends in 22 hours (though since it's a Buy It Now and not an auction, it COULD get relisted). Anybody wanna buy it?

Toho Kingdom has a picture of the Anchor Bay Megalon tape, there is no R&G Video logo on the back, so I'm presuming it is NOT the uncut video master New World licensed at the same time as Gigan and Mechagodzilla, but chose not to release due to the market already being flooded with inferior-quality unlicensed copies. They claim it is the same edited version, and that it starts with a logo for Burbank Video?!

Their scan of the Burbank box says "Duplicated in SP Mode" on the back (unlike some copies I'm finding on eBay, which have smaller tape spools and no such message on the back of the box). If the Anchor Bay version was indeed recycled from the Burbank release, maybe it'd be easier to track down an SP Burbank copy.

Here's a Burbank copy the seller claims to be SP:

I purchased this set finally. It will arrive within a week. Now to find a Megalon SP VHS.

Cheers!!!

As I said, try for a Burbank SP release if you can’t find an Anchor Bay - according to Toho Kingdom, the AB VHS was a direct port of the Burbank, down to having their logo at the start. (Burbank was apparently a subsidiary of Video Treasures, something I did not know until today.)

I will try to track it down. It would be nice to have with these others. Thanks for the info TServo.

I am capturing this set as I type. I should be finished sometime tonight. I will drop an update once I’m done.

😃

JEDIT:

I am burning directly to DVD-9. Audio will only be 256kbps. If needed, I could probably run and capture audio through PC, and go with PCM 2.0. I am unsure as to what audio quality these VHS tapes have. They ARE all corded in SP mode on VHS and in SP mode from the Panasonic DVD recorder I use.

Finished capping all 5 with the DVD recorder.

I remember when the “Anchor Bay Entertainment” name started popping up in the mid 90’s and those tapes often had covers that resembled the Starmaker releases with a banner placed over Starmaker’s old address and logo just so it now said “Anchor Bay Enertainment” but it stuck out like a sore thumb. I’m sure that was a rocky start, living off the assets of Video Treasures/Starmaker.

What I am thinking of doing is making ISO’s of each disc and then making them available to those who may want them for projects. If PCM audio is needed I could do that but it wouldn’t be right away.

Is there any interest in this idea?

Secondly, does anyone know what audio format is used for VHS tapes such as this? These 5 I did are all SP mode. I am waiting on my Godzilla Vs. Megalon SP VHS so I can cap that one as well. Is PCM audio worth doing for all of them?

Cheers!!!

Do you mean VHS Hi-Fi?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VHS#Hi-Fi_audio_system

Of course, if you’re using a mono VCR for capture, it won’t matter much.

Unless a video label was super cheapo in it’s tape duplication, even a SLP recording ought to have Hi-Fi tracks.

The tapes would be hi-fi, but the films themselves would still be mono, because that’s how they were mixed. (No Godzilla film had an English dub in stereo until Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II. In fact, I’m not sure if any Japanese film ever had an English dub mixed in stereo, U.S. or “international”, until the Streamline dub of Akira!)

But yes, a PCM capture would be perfect, I would think.

Jedit:

Thanks Tservo, for the explanation.

Oddly, even though they were released by Anchor Bay, the Star Maker intro is still present as is the R&G Video logo that comes afterwards.

I guess it’s time to capture some pcm audio from these puppies in case anyone wants the additional format for an archival release.

Another cool thing to find would be an SP copy of Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster. This may be impossible; the film spent the 90s sub-licensed to GoodTimes, who released exclusively in LP mode. The only chance would be to hunt for possible SP versions of the earlier Video Treasures issue, or the Canadian HGV release which had the same box art style as the Anchor Bay releases. (I am assuming HGV had Canadian distribution deals with both GoodTimes and StarMaker/Anchor Bay.) But I have no idea if either were even issued in SP, and as with many dual-format releases the only way to know for sure may be to look at the cassette itself. (Makes me wish I hadn’t recorded over my SP recording off AMC…)
