Lately, thanks also to this forum, I discovered an open matte HDTV version of “Gladiator”: I thought it was like many others, with some scenes properly matted, while others - in particular the ones with SFX - cropped, as usually SFX are done using final AR.
With my great surprise, I discovered that this movie is fully open matte, including all the SFX scenes! Even if Ridley Scott decided to set AR at 2.35:1, now everyone could benefit of this glorious 1.78:1 open matte version!!!
Video is taken from an HDTV broadcast, 1920x1080.
Audio tracks for the five languages are all from EU BD: English is DTS-HD MA, while French, German, Italian and Spanish are “only” DTS; they are unaltered; another track for English will be used, still to be decided - DD 5.1 448kbps from HDTV or DTS core from DTS-HD MA.
Subtitles for all five languages are from EU BD.

Could you possibly add the DTS 6.1 track from the original DVD as it was mixed in 6.1 theatrically (I think)

Interesting... but I have not the PAL DVD, nor the NTSC DVD - preferable, so that track will remain untouched... and, what about Cinema DTS track?!? Was is 5.1 or 6.1?

Sounds great to me, Andrea! BD50 would be better especially for the length of the film and maximizing bitrate. DTS-ES 6.1 track would be a stellar idea too, since I do quite agree with bigrob.
I'd have it as Disc Three with the 2-Disc Sapphire Series Blu-ray release (Remastered film disc here.)
EDIT: How about having a hidden audio track (accessed via remote or summat), one in Japanese?

Regading Gladiator, IMO, a great project would be to restore the Theatrical color timing using the unrestored BD as reference (which is a great representation of the theatrical colors), using your sporv method.
The restoree BD offers fantastic picture quality, but at the expense of color fidelity.

But the thing I was mentioning is that the restored BD has such a great transfer (simply the best available for the movie) and its OAR too (I'm sucker for scope films : ).
So the only thing it needs is a proper color timing.
But this project is about the open matte version... maybe another one would like to do it?!

Just out of curiosity, would it be possible to add optional letterbox bars to a project like this using blu ray's subtitle function?
mmmhhh... feasible, I think, but I don't know how to do it... maybe CatBus could know it, as he's a subtitle master; good idea, though!

If it is a pain I personally wouldn't worry too much about a subtitle scope masking option, as the current bluray provides the Scope version quite nicely.
No, I don't say it's a pain, just a new challenge... it may work or not, but it should be tested; if it works, it opens a world of new possibilities... think about the many open matte projects that could be made, leaving the viewer the choice to view it "as is" (open matte) or soft matted!

I have the original U.K PAL dvd release, if you need a rip of the DTS track?
Might be worrh getting hold of the R1 DVD tho for correct speed straight off.

I actually do own that first R1 DVD... Was more expensive than another edition the store had, but I knew I wanted that DTS track. :-D
I'm following a lot the new fanres forum, and I stopped to work to any project due to several reasons - mainly because I have not an hd monitor, and the little old one I'm forced to use is quite impossible to calibrate properly... but this, with all the others, will be done for sure...
Indeed, I'm trying to find the fastest CPU I could put into my actual PC, or if it's the case to buy a brand "new" used, very powerful, new PC...

A second vote for including the DTS-ES discrete mix .. at least as a possible secondary audio track.
The 6.1 discrete mix is unique in that it was made especially for the then-new DTS-ES discrete system found in the then latest receivers. Mi Casa (who also did the Lord of the Rings mixes) went back and tailored the new 6.1 mix to take advantage of the new discrete center back channel.
After the 6.1 DTS DVD release, this mix to my knowledge was never used again. Later versions were either 6.1 matrix or 5.1.
So I'm all for the original 5.1 mix and that should of course be there. But given a DTS-ES discrete track wouldn't take up a considerable amount of space and is already tailored to the theatrical version, it too would be cool to have on tap... ;-)
