General announcement re 2004 OT DVDs: please read

With all this special edition DVD hoopla, I want to remind everyone to keep one thing in mind.

Lucas is not screwing us with this release.

This release was not suppose to happen, GL has said many times that he did not want to do DVDs for any of the movies until Episode 3 was done.

Due to fan pressure he is releasing this set now. But this is not the “real” dvd set. If you are dissappointed with this set (and I don;'t blame you) don’t buy it, there is another much better one on its way for 2007.

As for it not being the original versions, I want them too, and I would of loved if that was what they were releasing in Sept 2004, from a marketing stand point it would of made a lot more sense, but please bare in mind that there was not suppose to be a sept 2004 release at all. This was not the original plan, but something that is being thrown together only from a couple months ago. Ift eh OV OT were to come out, it would not be now anyways.

So if your frustrated with LFL for not releasing the original versions, thats cool, but in the grand scheme of things it has nothing to do with this release.

Who's side are you on anyway? Just kidding. Is it really from fan pressure or is it just another way of getting people to buy the Star Wars trilogy yet another time? and another, and another, and another...

As to my knowledge, George Lucas mentioned that he plans to make an "Archive Edition" of the hexology, where he plans to put all the six movies up to par special effects and canon-wise as he sees fit. This will (finally) be his last word on how he wants people to see the StarWars saga. Fans anticipate that it might be released in 2007, as that is the 30th anniversary of it all.

I think not buying the SE dvds is not such a great loss, after all it will just be 'another roughcut' in a few years. But unlike most OT fans, SE fans will have had their chance to get it on DVD. Oh well, Life's a bitch sometimes.

Edit: I don't think the 2004 release is due to fan pressure, it's just a marketing move to give Episode III a bigger momentum in 2005.

that as well.

All I'm trying to say is that this release has nothing to do with either the ultimate edition or the original version. Lucas was always clear about when he planned to focus his attention on DVDs and that was whent he PT was done.

All this really proves is that LFL does not completely ignore audience demand (which should give us hope) it doesn't hurt us in anyway to have this release, and has brought a lot of traffic/attention our way. It sucks that it is not the version we desired, but we wouldn't be getting that in 2004 anyways. It will take a long time to clean up and digitize the OV, and there was never any intention to do it at this time anyways. What i'm getting at is to look at this release as an "at all" not an "instead of". This was not INSTEAD of the classics. Lucas is not screwing us by releasing these SE dvds, if your going to be frustrated be frustrated that he is NOT releasing the OVs. Its what he's not doing, not what he is doing that is the problem.

and from what I've heard this release was more of a Jim Ward Lucas Market idea then a George Lucas idea. GL will do the dvds his way in a couple of years, whether they include the version we want as well remains to be seen.

I'm pretty sure that if this year's release of the Special Edition won't include the OT, because of Lucas' veto, the chances that he'll let his beloved Archive Editions (what he himself imagines as his ultimate vision of the saga) be littered by the 'dreadful' OTs are below zero.

Don't forget that he stopped the release of the ultimate version of the Episode II Soundtrack for no apparent reason. And that was after Sony Music was already finished with producing it.

I don't want to tear down your heads up, Rebel Scumb. But I think we shouldn't underestimate the current situation. If George Lucas really doesn't care about this 2004 release, there would have been a much larger chance of the OT being included with the soon obsolete SEs than with his beloved Archive Edition.

I'm not saying I'm giving up. I'm just saying it's not september yet and I haven't given up on the dream of a 7DVD set (along the lines of the Alien Qaudrilogy) yet.

That's why I think we need to get more media attention. Not to convince people of our point of view. But to inform them of the current situation. Only then will the people have a choice. If CNN money can report about the Half-Life 2 Source code theft, there's no reason why they shouldn't report about Lucas already considering the OT as non-existent.

In my opinion, even if the petition breaches the 1 million mark, it won't do much good without any media attention.

LOL! Master Sifo-Dyas, I just noticed your sig and it's hillarious!

To me, the whole DVD thing is a marketing ploy - just as you said, they're trying to maximize SW interest among people just before EIII release.
I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

personally, and i know a lot of you, dont care one way or another if this is all about money. I will take whatever lucas throws out there. I not-so-much watch the movies as I collect them. Dont get me wrong though, I still watch the movies over and over again. It wouldnt bother me to buy the same movies twice or three times. If I have to buy the OT three more times to get everything, so be it.

i dont plan on rebuying any of the prequels so if Lucas does plan on releasing all the movies in a 6 disc box set... i may as well buy these ones while i have the chance...

the SE are worth the waste of money well over the prequels...

Well from a technical standpoint, they do not have enough time to put one together by September 2004. It takes a long time to put these things together. And from what I've heard tell, they are already waaaay behind schedule due to technical glitches in the digitizing process. So at this point a 7 disc set is out of the question.

Also, there is not a lot of material from the OT era left to supply extras, so the OT was always going to have less in the way of bonus material then the PT which has stuff made just for the website and DVDs.

I agree, but the time for the media attention will fall between the release of the 2004 dvds, and the may 2005 release of Ep3.

So no changes can be made to a DVD quickly. Then how did Spielberg change his version of ET overnight. Before the release we were all thinking bare bones theatrical, then come day of the release it seemed as if at the last minute he threw in Dolby 5.1 and a much loved DTS track. Changes can be made ridiculously fast. Dont be fooled by the mumbojumbo.

I kind of like it when people say. The originals will be released. It kind of reminds me of when Lynus says the Great Pumkin will come.

I was under the impression that all the retooling for ET was done for the theatrical release. So the new audio was ready when the DVD was pressed. No last minute changes or anything like that. The only question was how it was all going to be packaged and if the original version would be included. Thankfully, it was.

And the DVD has to be finalized months before it come out in stores. It takes time to press all those discs, package and ship them.

Whatever you may believe about them being able to make last minute changes is incorrect.

It is fairly certain. But who can ever be 100% positive with LFL?

yeah how'd you manage to do that??

regarding the ultimate editions. I have it from several sources whom I trust that they are in the works. Of course nothing is certain, after all LFL annouced a raiders of the lost ark special edition (yep just like the SW trilogy) for last year that was suppose to go to theatres. It never happened. ANd that was offically announced.

I would stake my rep that there will be a 2007 SE for the OT including new changes such as inserting Bail into ANH, replacing the ESB emp with Ian McDiarmid and putting the imperial march into ANH.

Hello all, you may not remember me I last posted in May 2003. I made some rather rude insults about Bob Falfa and opinion regarding the widescreen vs pan scam versions of the films. Other people told me I was rude. I got angry with them and said I would never post here again. I the regret comments about Bob Falfaand others and I apologize. I still feel the way I do about widescreen vs pan and scam but I should not have insulted Bob Falfa as he is as intitled to his opinion as I am mine. I came back because of recent report of Lucas releasing the special edition only and not releasing the original edition on DVD. I can not stand what Lucas has done to this classic movie series. Before 1997 and the creation of the special edition I used to worship Lucas as god. No longer the changes he made are bull bleep. Ep 1 and 2 suck and probably so Ep 3. I will longer buy or rent any movies with his name on it (not just star wars movies) I will not buy any of his DVDs VHS or tickets to any of his movies, If he produces and tv shows, series or specials I will not watch them. I will continue this boycott untill he releases the orginal edition on DVD. I expect this to work but I will not give him one more penny untill and untill he stops acting holyer than thou and starts showing some respect to the fans that made him is millions

P.S.
there is 1 change I would aprove of in the orginal edition. and that is if that used cgi to change the face of the emperor's to that of George Lucas. Because he is acting more and more like an evil emperor -shame on you georgie

Steal the coding that is used when you click the image button above to attach an image to a post reply (the one that looks like a picture frame) and use it to find the animated image. Then, before you actually post your reply, copy the code and go into your profile setting and use that code as your signature. It will load any image you want as a signature.

Or were you asking how he animated it? If so, I'll defer to him.

No I think that answers my question. Its been so long since I've done any HTMLor Java that this stuff is a complete mystery to me.

The thing is, though, that this is not HTML. It's a derivative whose name I cannot recall. Uses the squared brackets ( [ ] ) instead of the arrow brackets that HTML uses ( < > ). Also reorders some of the actual code. Pretty similar for th most part, but it can get weird when you go for image or webpage links.
