Without question. What would've been its competition that year?

I agree that, without a special animation category, it's rare that an animated film would ever win anything. So I feel very much trapped. Either you go off to the "kiddy" table and take what you can get, or you try to play with the "big boys" and get shot out of the sky. Our society is so stupid and judgmental. And, yeah, I'm very pissed that Disney shut down its traditional animation department. Some of the best animated films (or even films in general) were made by Disney in the '90s. And now, like YIYF said, all they do is make these crappy sequels to movies they made 50 years ago. I just watched my Cinderella DVD the other day and saw a trailer for a Cinderella III! How many more things can they do with that story?! I mean, come on, the shoe fits. The end!

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Not much that would have been an Oscar threat. The Emperor's New Groove was hilarious, IMO, but many people didn't like it. The Road to El Dorado was merely decent and primarily memorable to me because I was vacationing in Mexico the week it came out. Aside from that, there were Digimon, Pokemon 2000, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, and Heavy Metal 2000. I dunno if Bloodlust had an American theatrical release, but I'm pretty sure HM2000 premiered on Starz, so it wouldn't have been eligible. Not that it was any good anyhow.

Oh, there was also Fantasia 2000, but I don't know about its eligibility.

Miyazaki's howl's moving castle should win.

I still haven't seen Howl's, so I can't say whether it should win or not. I'd like to see it, but I haven't had the time or the ability to do so. I will say that Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit held up to repeat viewing very well, and that's always a strong indicator of quality for me.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

What abilities are needed apart from vision and preferably (but not neccesarily) ears?

Accessibility. I'm not going to d/l some lousy cam job just so I can see it, as the quality of presentation is inevitably going to affect my opinion of the film. Howl's is not playing anywhere near here, and it's not available on DVD yet, so I have to be patient.

I was joking man, just found the use of the word 'ability' funny, like it's a skill, or lack thereof, that was causing you to miss out on the movie.

Yeah real funny joke. I bet you didn't know that his mother had her eyes put out in an extremely rare cinema-going accident! Don't YOU feel horrible!!

You weren't supposed to bring that up in here! That was strictly for the people in IRC.
