Forum software update

Author
Time
 (Edited)

Includes:

- Minor layout and navigational changes
- Avatar sizes increased to 100x100 pixels, but avatar uploads are disabled temporarily pending hosting upgrades
- A setting under preferences to disable the WYSIWYG post editor
- The ability to delete multiple private messages
- Other minor fixes and enhancements, mostly under the hood

We'll be playing with the category structure and moving lots of posts in the fan project sections, so please bear with us. It's going to take a while to sort through everything.

As always, please place all bug reports in the Bug Reports forum. You'll probably encounter minor layout issues (colors, font sizes, etc.), and while we'll be tweaking these issues, please feel free to post them so we don't miss anything.

Well everything looks good at first glance, especially the multiple PMs and seeing whos online :)

Awesome Jay!!!!!!!!!

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Definitely feels cleaner. It is different but different is good.

Well... the ads are gone.  Can it stay that way, please?

I'm not a fan of having the thumbnail images of the people's avatars before the threads, but other than that this looks like it could be a major improvement! :)

I like the changes, the avatars before the threads is kind of weird, and something about the upgrade disabled Vaderios' pictures! I noticed that the HTML never had the filename.jpg at the end, which weirded me out, but you could right click and save them just fine. Something weird about his hosting, or with our upgrade?

I don't see the point in putting an avatar in front of the thread title either, it's confusing if anything...

I kind of like the avatar thing, but I'm a big ego-maniac.

More importantly - the front page link "join the forum" no longer works.  It points to "www.originaltrilogy.com/forum" instead of "originaltrilogy.com/forum"

I love the fact that we can delete multiple PMs at once. Thank you, Jay! :)

A few observations:

- Hitting enter still puts you down two lines rather than one (holding shift while you hit enter works, but it's still a bit odd). Not a big deal, but this is still the only place I can ever remember posting to that does that.
- 005 mentioned Vaderios' pictures not working. They work for me (in Firefox 3.5), but get cut off at the edge of the box. It won't allow me to scroll to the right to see the whole thing as before, so I'm missing half of his mock-up every time. I'm wondering now if that would apply to any wide picture...
- The avatar beside the thread title thing is unnecessary, in my opinion. It makes things look cluttered, especially when the avatars aren't displaying properly. (some only show as a long white bar)
- All of our avatars are slightly blurry now. Maybe I just need to rub my eyes. Haha. ;)

Oh, and:

- I spilled some garbage juice in the kitchen last night and it still stinks in here.

Bug reports/feature requests/etc. in the proper forum, please. Separate topics for separate bugs. Include links to the topics you're talking about because I don't read everything that gets posted.

I'll be adding a switch that lets you turn user avatars on/off for forum and topic pages separately (the current setting is universal and shows/hides them everywhere).

Actually, the image you are referring to is his newest which is on Imageshack. It won't let you scroll due to something in the forum software, yes. His older images are blank spaces.

"Several topics for several bugs " is why I didn't post there because I didn't want to clutter things up with multiple threads. :p I can if you want, but might be faster/easier for you to just reply to my concerns in one post if you want. I'll defer to your judgment.

Oh, sorry, I missed that. Just want to acknowledge that I saw what you're saying so others don't jump on the 'they're all broken' bandwagon. ;)

They're easier for me to track and for other users to see they've already been found. Please try to separate feature requests/opinions from actual bugs/errors.

Looks ok overall. I'm glad to see the light gray / dark gray / blue colors have been kept, as they have always looked great. :) But the forum subject categories ( "Star Wars Fan Edits and Preservation Efforts", etc. ), where you can see all the thread topics, look cluttered with all those avatars stuck on the left side, it would look a lot neater and cleaner if avatars were left inside threads only.

The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.

I'm glad the colors are the same too. Still looks good and everything is easy to read. :) And don't forget that Jay mentioned he'll be adding the ability to turn avatars on and off separately for the topics and thread pages.

Ripplin: Ah, well, if you can turn off the avatars on the main pages that show the lists of thread topics (but still leave avatars on for posts inside the threads), then no problem. :)

Hey Jay,

I see youre hard at work and I saw the new categories, which is awesome....just wanted to give my 2cents on how it could be split up

Star Wars Fan Projects - Fan edits for Star Wars
Other Star Wars Projects and Preservations - Basically all the Star Tours and Deleted Magic and stuff here along with PURE preservations of Star Wars
Other Fan Projects - Just other movies that are edits, say like ADM's Blade Runner
Other Preservations - All other movie preservations, no edits, just pure preservations

Is something like that what you were going for?

Yeah, I never thought of any of my stuff as being a "fan edit".  Not that I have anything against fan edits, but when I first saw the new list of categories, I didn't know where to find preservations.  Actually, I thought that the primary mission of OT.com was preservation, not fan edits.

I changed the forum titles slightly to make preservations easier to find seeing as they're fairly prominent and important.

While preservation of the OT was certainly our first mission, the proliferation and popularity of fan edits have kept this place alive and kept that early mission visible. And, as you mention, many projects don't fit under the category of "fan edits," so it was time to split the forums and let each category go in its own direction.

Great, thanks Jay. One minor point: the words "and preservation efforts" should be removed from the description of forum 11 ("Fan Edits of Other Films").

I will now start moving threads to add content to the new forums - please bear with us while things are being moved, there is bound to be some confusion and "lost" threads at first.

I think the separation of preservation and edit forums is a fantastic idea.  I'm also quite fond of the new avatar sizes. But I think the best new addition is the ability to delete more than one private message at a time.  That's been needed for quite some time!

I don't like the avatars next to the threads, though.

I just wanted to say again, thank you to Jay for the site update, the separation of forums is great! and I love deleting multiple PMs :p

Also thank you Moth for organizing the new forums....going thru and organizing over 2000 threads is no piece of cake and is definitely time consuming, Im sure everyone here appreciate both of your guys hard work

Thanks again guys!
