Fight Club - Book Edit - DISCUSSION

Allright. Obviously Fight Club is practically the most amazing film of all time. This is a fact. The book is also very amazing, and the two live together in perfect harmony, they really do. Okay, that being said, I thought it might be kind of fun to do an edit that reorders the film to reflect the novel a little more (of course the movie is perfect as is, I'm not arguing that). I want to see how it turns out in a more stream-of-conscious style of narration.

So what I did was read the book, of course it was great. Then I read it again, and whenever I caught a quote or scene from the movie (which I had almost memorized, of course) I wrote it down in sequential order to see what I could get together. I got a few chapters in and I still have my notes somewhere I think.

I tried putting it together a little bit for fun one weekend and I ended with an opening I thought was really rock.

Opening logos--

TYLER (VO)
This is it, ground zero.

Cut to Tyler holding a gun in Narrator's mouth, scene plays out normally, but instead, right as he says whatever he says right before he's hurled into Bob's bitch tits, reverse real fast to that last frame of the opening credit sequence (pov of gun inside Narrator's mouth) and reverse shot so it's going down the barrel, orchestra starts to play (the alternate music score for the opening sequence), and just as we enter Narrator's nose the techno kicks up and we use more simple, static credits, to give it more of a simple feel (again, movie is perfect, so this truly is an editing by a fan). Right as we reverse all the way to the end of the credit sequence (the original beginning) then we hurl into Bob's bitch tits and then commence an amazing alternate telling of one of the greatest stories of our time.

This is a leftover screencap, I deleted the project, but I could easily start it up again.

Anyway, I wanted to open this up for discussion, how exactly you might reorder it, things you would do (no one dare talk about cutting anything out!). Anyway if you wanna break out your books and collaborate....I think one day this could be real fun--every DVD comes with a homework assignment of course

I agree with your comments how the excellent film compliments the excellent book. However, I don't think you'll be able to do an edit that reflects the book. The problem is that there are crucial scenes and subplots that were changed for the film and never filmed. These include (WARNING! POSSIBLE SPOILERS!)

- How Jack meets Tyler: in the book, they meet on a nude beach. A definite departure from the hilarious airplane scene.

- The source of the fat for the soap: in the book they steal the fat from Marla's mother's liposuction.

- The ending: the ending in the book is very surreal in which the protagonist may or may not be in a mental institution.

END SPOILERS

So yeah, I'm sure you already know this and I am curious how you plan to go around this.

Oh right--yeah some changes are unavoidable--the way he and tyler meet and source of the fat I can get around by just replacing those sections in my notes with their film counterparts.

But the atmosphere will match perfectly. I got a brainstorm from a pm from somebody (I'm not signed in yet so I can't check), who was talking about condensing the whole thing into a 4 minute music video. I realized the best way to successfully retain the books stream of conscious narrative is to reorder everything, but to avoid awkward cuts and jumps that just doni't work in a movie, basically there's music playing all the time. basically a two hour long series of music videos (will need soundtrack to fc), loosely one chapter to a song.

Yeah the movie does end differentally too, I got an idea that instead of just using the different ending from the movie, change the ending to make a whole new third ending--I was thinking of tossing in some explosions around Marla and the Narrator just as we fade out--suggesting they've been put into one of the target buildings by Tyler before he died cause he knew all along he'd be shot and...--i dunno, not sure why he would do this--it would kinda make Tyler a monster, when of course in the movie he's a messiah to be trusted by the end and that's such a nice idea...but the point would be to have one more perspective on how FC could have ended.

Okay, I'm past chapter 6 in my note taking--My stragedy of course is when I recognize either a quote/scene/internet spot (from the dvd) I write it down in order it's appearing in the book. I'll post some samples when I can, pages and pages of text--then maybe someone could join in and get the book done twice as fast.--

But they were in one of the target buildings
The narrator defused the bomb, but he never left the building.

That's strange, cause all the buildings were loaded head to toe with charges--though it's much more dramatic with just one to defuse...it's just the Narrator barges into one of the buildings, and Tyler follows him telling him he's got great seats--I always thought that meant a different building.
