Meh, I don't really care. Windows XP is doing fine for me and I don't want to bother upgrading.

A buddy called me yesterday with a troubleshooting issue on Win 3.1.

Haha, thats funny...I'm tempted to load up a computer with Win 3.1 just to say I have a Win 3.1 machine

But as far as Vista being delayed. It doesn't bother me. From the little I read about it, it isnt gonna run (at least effeciently) any any now modern machines, and since I dont really want to upgrade my computer (plus Microsofts whole change to the definition of a computer for the use of OEM software) im not really too interested in upgrading, though some of the features in Vista do look kinda nice.

Vista, as I've said, is going to have a very slow adoption due to the fact that it won't run on nearly 50% of current machines (like Simon said). There is some kind of plug in necessary to run Vista that cannot be handled by the hardware setup on many machines. Wonder how many will buy and attempt to install without this knowledge. You know the salespeople at Best Lie won't tell them to not buy it.

How would one go about finding out if Vista would work on one's computer?

I'm not really certain of why they are even bothering to have an operating system that works in 3D. It just produces a whole new dimension of things that can potentially go wrong with the computer, and that's not even counting the fact that it won't run on most modern computers.

And this suprises you why? Has Microsoft ever gotten anything out on time or in a timely manner? Don't forget it will be a buggy, easily hacked nightmare.

For the same reason fishermen put spinning lures on their hooks, and rappers/pimps/NBAers put spinning rims on their vehicles: stuff that sparkles and moves will get the attention of dumb people/animals better than something that isn't so flashy. There are some aspects of Vista that are really nice, and some of the 3D stuff looks like it might have some functional use and be more than just digital bling, but I'm in no rush to upgrade. Hell, I've only been running XP for about 16 months.

Yeah, I've only had XP about that long myself. Of course, it's been very buggy for me lately, hence my long sabbatical from the forums (I wonder if anybody noticed...). I've gotten rather used to using Macs for my editing projects, and it really doesn't seem that much different.

I miss DOS 6.22. I even ran a DOS version of AOL.

"Wonder how many will buy and attempt to install without this knowledge."

Most likely, it'll be put on brand-new computers, much like the "media center" version of XP was.

Unlike the current Windows XP, there will be no versions designed specifically for advanced 64-bit computing, multimedia computers

THERE ARE A LOT OF MAC PEOPLE WHO HAVE TO WORK ON A pc AT THEIR WORKPLACE. SOME OF THOSE PEOPLE WOULD LOVE TO BE ABLE TO DO SOME OF THEIR WORK ON THEIR HOME COMPUTER. ALSO, THIS OPENS UP THE GATES FOR MAC GAMERS. NOW YOU CAN RUN windows ON YOUR MAC WHICH WILL ALLOW YOU TO PLAY pc GAMES. OF COURSE, YOU HAVE TO HAVE A MAC THAT USES THE INTEL CHIP. THIS IS A WIN-WIN SITUATION FOR MAC OWNERS. bill gates IS PROBABLY $#!+ing HIS PANTS RIGHT NOW.

I'm very happy with this announcement. I've been debating buying a new computer, and that's one more pro beside the Intel-iMac

My question is....why doesn't everyone just have a PC? I'm not biased, just look at the facts: PCs are more common anywhere, Macs have had buggy problems since well...forever, 99.9% of all (good) computer games run ONLY on PCs, and the interfaces in Win 95 through XP were more user friendly than the Mac OS. And let's not forget the fact that if everyone had the same system, there would be NO compatability problems. PCs just seem to be a better candidate.

I'm not saying that Windows doesn't have its glitches, because trust me it does and everyone will agree with that. I'm just saying that maybe we could call Windows the lesser of two evils?

Personally, Macs just seem like children's learning toys to me. Neon colors, cartoon faces, and interfaces that are a little too easy to use. Sure the gigantic (and I mean HUGE) monitors are a plus but you can't do much with it except watch movies......and that's what TVs are for. No good games are made for Macs (as said above) so the monitor STILL doesn't come in handy.

Finally, Apple just doesn't have a good track record. Sure iPods are nice but so are Dell DJs (to name one mp3 player). iPods freeze up and DJs don't. Macs were notorious for freezing also, where Windows just did something weird like give you that blue warning screen. Overall, I think Macs and the Apple company in general is a good company with ok products. But I just think that Microsoft is better, it has more experience with hardware. I mean think about it; the Xbox kicked ass right? Well where's Apple's game system?

isnt this vertual PC.

yeah vista is going to be too good when ti frist comes out but Microsoft is preparing for the future. already this OS is going to insanely good for laptops. it will run 30% faster on the new AMD power chip, which is huge. overall its going to be interesting but what Microsoft is doing is kinda smart as technology is moving so faster software will go outta date pretty fast, vista will be around for alot long then your average OS, and if you get it, it will require fewer upgrades in the long run.

Apple picked their target audience. If you're looking to do any movie editing, music work, or other labour-intensive work like that, Macs are the way to go. And I wouldn't judge their track record on the iPod.
