I am going to see the film on Dec 14 and I am not really sure why.

TFA was basically Market Research: The Movie.

This is shaping up to be Market Research Episode II: Revenge of the Focus Group.

But there is still a recognizable kernel of Star Wars in there and I think that is what compels me to show up.

I really don’t understand these type of posts which state stuff like this - without reason, explanation or context.

Why did you find the TFA to be ‘Market Research: The Movie’?

Why do you think TLJ is shaping up to be ‘Market Research 2: Revenge Of The Focus Group’?

Is it any more than other franchise films, or is it compared to other Star Wars films, or just these two films in particular?

I disagree with the assessment of TFA but at least the completed film is available to watch. How can anyone make this kind of statement about TLJ based on trailers and rumors?

The most interesting thing about the TFA-as-soulless-corporate-product argument is that I’ve yet to see anyone even attempt to describe what a new Star Wars movie that isn’t just a cash grab would look like, beyond vague generalizations like “more original” and “less fan service”. I truly believe these people haven’t even bothered to figure out what it actually is that they want.

I also wonder how many of these people were even alive during the original merchandising runs.

Since it’s Thanksgiving week, I’ll go ahead and say that I’m thankful that we’re getting a sequel trilogy featuring the original leads and John Williams scores, with likeable new characters and made with a clear love for the original trilogy.

Hear, hear!

I’ve heard people say Disney is just trying to make merchandising money, forgetting Lucas built his Empire on Kenner figures.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

That’s pretty funny. I’m really dreading seeing the purple-haired girl and the fat asian hipster looking girl in The Last Jedi. Star Wars is about escapism. It should not be about reminding you about the types of clowns that walks around in everyday life.

Jim, if that is what you took away from my comment then I haven’t any patience for you.

Do us all a favor? Don’t go see the movie. Ever.

Escapism for some can be a galaxy where people who look like them (purple hair, asian, girl, black, whomever) can have epic adventures in outer space instead of constantly being shat on here on Earth by Jim’s ilk.

do you have these kinds of snap judgments about any of the male characters too? or just the female ones.

Terms like ‘fat asian hipster’ aren’t acceptable on this site.

Nor is ‘…the types of clowns that walks around in everyday life’ in the context in which you used it.

Consider this a warning.

If you have any questions or problems with this feel free to PM me.

Let’s leave the subject of Jim Smith’s post there - and get back to discussing Episode VIII, thank you.

If anyone is in a city with an Alamo Drafthouse, they’re doing another collaboration with Mondo for commemorative glasses. They designed the commemorative glasses for Rogue One also. I was a day late on those, they went quickly. Anyway, if you’re a collector of this sort of thing, here’s a link to the pic.

I’m not posting the pic directly because it contains a spoiler we haven’t really discussed here. I know this is a spoiler thread but this is a big one.

Too bad they couldn’t emulate the classic Burger King glasses in design. Minus the toxic paint. 😉

That Porg shot really shows the awkward side of practical effects.

What part of that porg shot looked awkward to you? I’m not a huge fan of the porg design, but I thought that shot looked incredibly realistic.

The mouth looked rather strange, as well as the wings looking like they were on simple hinges. It will probably be better in context.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.
