That has what exactly to do with the Holiday Special? It is supposed to still be canon, and I stand by that until you provide proof other than various fan writings having been invalidated as we all know. Obviously we shouldn’t keep on that here, unless you have some concise example to offer.

Did you read that article? LFL’s new approach has always been very clear. New canon = episodes I-VI and TCW plus anything made from 2014 on. Where is exactly does the HS fit in there? I’d love to know.

Yes, I can and did read, it said it includes those things, not limited solely to them. I said, if you can come back with a concise example that mentions the Holiday Special specifically as part of the EU that got thrown out, that would be acceptable. If you just have speculation without much to back it up, let’s not muck up Frink’s Ridiculous thread with it.

While Lucasfilm always strived to keep the stories created for the EU consistent with our film and television content as well as internally consistent, Lucas always made it clear that he was not beholden to the EU. He set the films he created as the canon. This includes the six Star Wars episodes, and the many hours of content he developed and produced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. These stories are the immovable objects of Star Wars history, the characters and events to which all other tales must align.

It said included and the very clear implication was that it was limited solely to them, and nothing they’ve said or done since then has suggested otherwise.

There is literally no reason at all to think that when they said this that they meant “these things are canon and the other stuff is not, except maybe the Holiday Special because everyone loves that one, right?” I honestly cannot fathom how you think a complete wiping of the EU which explicitly ditches all books, comics, video games, TV shows (besides TCW, as stated), and TV movies wouldn’t include ditching the Holiday Special.

Though I can’t find a concise “Holiday Special isn’t canon” answer offhand, I don’t see why I would need to. Common sense and everything we know about the EU wipe is on my side.

And Frink, I mentioned that it was (and is) canon because I didn’t know how to take “for reals”, I wasn’t sure if you meant it wasn’t related to the “real” movies, or if you meant it in a slang way to indicate your own disinterest.

Slang to indicate my disinterest.

At the same time, it didn’t get the same direct death strike as the rest of the EU, and occasionally even gets a lifeline tossed to it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars_Holiday_Special
"Despite its absence from the relevant press releases, this was widely interpreted as applying to The Star Wars Holiday Special as well. This was partially negated in a 2015 interview with J. J. Abrams."

Also, I assume most of us here aren’t 100% happy with George Lucas, I for one want this to stay canon just to continue to piss him off. Anyway, let’s just agree to keep the Holiday Special in our hearts year round however we choose (with Rifftrax, I think it is pretty classic now), and not muck up Frink’s thread any more.

Frink, thanks for those couple of answers, both make more sense now.

If you’ve seen that interview, JJ is clearly joking (as he often does). Anyway, LFL’s new canon policy is pretty hardline and doesn’t and hasn’t allowed for people to randomly canonize old works (despite what Wikipedia might hope).

Still, canon is what you make of it. If you feel like the HS should be canon, go for it! Nothing wrong with personally seeing it that way. But the chances it is officially canon is very slim to almost definitely one. Not that any of that matters for Frink’s edit. And I have to say, I’m with him. HS? No thanks.

All right, but I still think ending Ridiculous 4 with the full Holiday Special memory haze recap of '77 SW complete with Chewie’s lifeless stare bookends, would be pretty funny (even on redundancy merits alone).

But I think we’ve said as much as is necessary about the canon status of the Holiday Special (I’m not even arguing either way in this post), and since most all I had left to say about the subject is in regards to a different Ridiculous episode, this should really be the last post on the subject (and honestly, a pretty amicable resolution to a Star Wars debate, as we all know how these things can go).

Specifically @TV’s Frink, if you haven’t watched the Holiday Special with Rifftrax, I recommend giving it a look. The shock of the show itself is pretty rough, but the jokes at its expense are great AND they even riff on the original '78 commercials, which is gold in itself. We watch the riffed special at least once a year now, and the pain of the horrible parts is pretty much gone; overall the experience is actually good.

Okay then, one last thing. We’ve put off taking the Christmas tree down for a while as the 16 month old just loves it, but tonight ended up being the night, and traditionally we watch The Star Wars Holiday Special while we tear into the remainder of Christmas stuff (it seems fitting), and even though I watched this randomly the other day, the wife insisted we watch it tonight… so, I’ve got two viewings under my belt in 2017 already. Take that how you will.

Edit: By the way, my kid is going to freak out in the morning when she sees all the Christmas stuff is gone… should be interesting.

Well then it was worth it. 😃

Just for fun, here’s the sfx I added (all taken from freesound.org).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9eUgao4Bj0

In order:
-Walking on carpeted floor
-Walking on metal roof
-Sitting in leather chair
-Garage door closing
-Microwave door closing
-Car engine revving
-Spaceship starting up (synthesized)
-Spaceship flyby (synthesized, but also slowed down to sound more “space-y”)

I honestly thought you used sound FX from the Batman movie. Impressive!

Probably 90%-95% towards finishing the workprint. First pass is done, I’m just going back through to pick up small ideas, fix some audio issues, and so on.

So we can expect a release some time this year? 😉

I’m looking forward to it! I’ll still probably be (legally) an adult before you get 'er done though. 😛

I would be content if it comes out before I can start ordering from the senior menu at IHOP. 😉
