IIRC, it was originally just Dragon Ball 2 in manga form, but someone misread Toriyama's 2 as a Z and that's how we got DBZ.

If that is true, it is really funny. And makes sense of the nonsensical "Z". Wouldn't be surprised if it was a myth though.

Yeah, that's definitely not true.  I've never even heard that before.  But there is no logo drawn on any part of the manga series that says "Dragon Ball Z" or "Dragon Ball 2."  The logo reads simply "Dragon Ball" all the way through to the last chapter of the series.

Now, the rumor I heard is that Toei came to Toriyama or Toriyama somehow heard that Toei was planning to relaunch its own series and suggested the Z himself as a rather tongue-in-cheek way of getting people to think that it was almost over.

Well, I wasn't quite sure where I should start, but it didn't take much searching on the internet to find pretty much all of it, so I guess I'll just start from the beginning.

Yeah, I recommend starting from the beginning.  Honestly, VIZ-isms in the translations or not, a much better manga earlier on.

Well, I found the manga and the anime, but I figured I'd start with the manga and work my way up.

It'll take months. :P

So I finally got around to watching the first few episodes of Dragon Ball. It's...not what I was expecting. A bit dirtier. :P

But where did you manage to track down those episodes?  The first 13 episodes of DB (in their original form) are the only episodes of the series officially unavailable in English.  And that sucks for me because they're some of my favorite episodes, and I'd love to get my hands on them.  Tell me!!!

And I can see why the early eps aren't available in the US. Lots of naked Goku/crotch-checking by Goku. :P

Actually, the content isn't the reason.  It's a licensing issue.  See, FUNimation first dubbed the first 13 episodes back in 1995, and they released them to home video.  However, they weren't in charge of their own distribution then, so the tapes (and subsequent DVDs) were released by Trimark.  However, the contract they entered into, for some reason had no clear end to it.  So to this day, Trimark still holds the distribution rights to those episodes.  So FUNimation redubbed those episodes in 2001 along with the rest of the series, and they were able to release bilingual DVDs for episodes 14-153, but they still can't release the first 13 episodes, which only exist in America in their heavily censored dub from 1995.

Ok this is my last update because the stream of information for this is rather slow. It is believed that Dragonball Kai will indeed be cropped to widescreen like the US DVD sets but it will be cropped according to the relevance of the scene, so say they have the option to crop out the bottom of Roshi's shirt or the top of his head, they'll do the shirt as opposed to the "universal cropping" of the widescreen DVDs. So has anyone seen the first episode of DB Kai?  I have... and so far I'm not impressed.  I continue to fail to see the point.  The new score isn't memorable.  I found the whole thing extremely tedious and waiting for it to be over.  The new opening and closing animation is nice... but it doesn't in any way match the animation in the actual episode!  And I hated, absolutely hated, the decision to start the series from the point of view of Planet Vegeta.  Sigh.  Why does this series even exist?

So they are leaving the only dragon ball i like dragon ball alone and only remaking dragon ball Z.

I like the original better with Goku the little kid and Bulma the humor and comedy.  This is an extension to where he is grown up right?  I never liked the change in the animation style from dragon ball original to Z.  Looks too much like american comic books over muscled characters.  Don't mind the Kung fu and stuff quite so much in moderation but that is all Z is. Watching the super saiyens duking it out looks a bit much like a street fighter videogame, and this was before the first street fighter animated film was done right?

Yeah, that pisses me off too that they are just skipping to Z.  Although, ironically, it's kinda like how FUNimation ended up doing it.  You know, they dubbed 13 episodes of DB before skipping to Z.  Granted, I'm sure the Kai audience knows the story, but it's still just jarring, having Bardock fight Freeza, then having some three minute recap of DB and suddenly... oh, we're supposed to care about this?  Sigh.  Why does this exist?!

Oh by the way, Kai is available now via several outlets.  Fan reaction has been 'meh' at most... the music has been hit-and-miss, the voices have been on-and-off, they're cutting canon material from the manga, even more continuity errors afoot, and the pacing is messed up.  Oh yeah, and the re-coloring has been universally agreed as nice; however, they didn't color out the dust that was made more obvious in the film by the recoloring.  EXAMPLE:

I'm more curious as to how the ratings are in Japan.  I don't know whether or not it'd be a shame if this ended up being cancelled before it was finished.

Honestly, I only care about this for curiosity's sake, and that's in terms of what's going to be changed and by changed I mean cut.  So far the only major change we've had is the horrible Bardock introduction.  But other than that, it's all been minor snippets here and there.  Since these first few episodes are so full of needed story elements, not much is going to be cut.  So my only draw to this series is just to see what isn't there, which is a bad sign, but I think I'll find myself more interested when they get into more filler-heavy areas of the show, just to see what they do with it.

Gaff, if this is out-rating One Piece, I think it'll last.

The one scene that truly got butchered by the re-cuts is the Piccolo vs. Raditz scene.  There's no dramatic tension - and it's not the music, oh no; the whole scene feels rushed.

Yeah, I noticed that too.  Since I was already having a hard time paying attention, I didn't notice what it was that seemed off, but I guess that was it.

You guys need to check out the "Dragon Ball Z: Abridged" series on Youtube. It's the only DBZ fan-dub I've ever seen that actually entertained me. I especially like it because the humor is very Dragon Ball- esque (as in, pre-Z Dragon Ball)
