Jedi Master

I was thinking about this over the weekend but forgot to post it. Is it just me or were you pissed when Obi-Wan was shown as, not only a Jedi Master in Revenge of the Sith but also on the Jedi Council? When did Ben ever say he'd been a Master? He said he was once a Jedi Knight, the same as Luke's father. And then, in Empire, when Ben appears to Luke and gives his immortal, "You will go to the Dagobah system. There you will learn from Yoda, the Jedi Master who instructed me," I know I was filled with such awe. A Jedi Master. The one who taught Obi-Wan. Master was the next step. It was something we'd never seen before. Obi-Wan was just a flunkie warrior in comparison. But in the prequels, it's suddenly "revealed" that Obi-Wan was practically Yoda's second-in-command once Mace bit it. And he was a Master?! It just cheapens Master to me. I mean, even Anakin made it on the council and only a step away from Master.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

On a related note, revisionist viewing of the line from ANH : "When I left you I was but the learner, now I am the master" has more weight in the light of the 'on the council but not a Master' offence taken by young Anakin in ROTS. He's been holding to that grudge for 20 years by that point.

So, Gaff, what you're saying is the prequels diluted and contradicted the OT. Surely not.

What always gets my panties in a bunch when reguarding the horrible inconsistancies with the PT and the OT is this

Yoda: You are reckless!
Obi-wan: So was I, if you remember.

Because, even in TPM he was a mature, clear headed dude. Maybe when he was younger, but then again Yoda never taught him anyway (unless maybe when he was like 4 years old) because it goes, Yoda - Dooku - Qui-Gon - Obi-Wan. But then I'm just making excuses for the crappy PT anyway.

IIRC, he had permission. But who cares? We all know the PT screwed up almost everything that the OT had suggested about the past.

Ah, I remember when Lucas said Ep III would tie together all of the prequels together with the OT. No movie could have ever done that, no matter how good, the way Lucas took a huge sh1t on what we like to call continuity.

Since when was there ever jedi ranking in the OT other than student-master? Vader was his student, Kenobi was Vader's master. And they all were Jedi knights. This dumb heirerchy didnt exist until the PT--they were never an organization!

I just assumed you were caled a Master when you took on a student. But it does sort of demean the title if that is the case. I'm sure the EU has an explanation for the difference.
There's good in the Original Trilogy, and it's worth fighting for.

Lack of PT<->OT consistency aside, he had permission, but it wasn't accepted well by the Council. Obi-Wan seemed to be very stubborn at that point, and they probably just caved in.

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

Yeah, but aside from that, Obi-Wan was touted as the good boy Jedi. He was used as the traditionalist foil to Qui-Gon in Phantom Menace and to Anakin in the other two. He was always the rule-following happy boy who chastized the unorthodox free thinkers.

Exactly. Because Obi-Wan's character was poorly rewritten as Qui-Gon when the bad decision was made to have Anakin begin as a child.
