Hello! I’ve been lurking on these boards for about two months now, but this is my first post!
I’ve been working on a new edit and one of the things I’ve been trying to add back into the prequels is the emotional shorthand of the original trilogy. It’s so clear when you look at a Star Destroyer that that’s what the bad guys fly around in. But when I see Palpatine’s Senate Office Building, it really doesn’t have that huge, imposing feel that would give the audience a sense of dread. I think that kind of evil in plain sight was what George was going for, but I was wondering if anyone has ever replaced it with footage from another movie. I keep thinking a futuristic version of Saruman’s tower would look so cool in the middle of Coruscant!
As Starkiller mentioned, he’s not meant to be seen as evil until mid-way through ROTS.
Secondly, It isn’t “Palpatine’s Senate Office Building” made specifically for him, it has obviously been there for a while and used by whoever is currently in power. Why would a generic senate building look ‘evil’?
Vader’s castle in R1 looks evil and imposing, but that’s secluded on Mustafar and obviously owned by Vader so that makes sense.
A senate building in the Republic’s capital though? Not really the same thing.
Changing it doesn’t really make any sense from a visual or storytelling perspective, if you wanna do it then more power to you, but I don’t understand how it makes any sense at all. If we’re drawing comparrisons to the OT, then Jabba’s palace from the outside doesn’t evoke a sense of dread when we first see it; it just looks like a ‘palace’ would look on that planet.
