DS vs. PSP one year later

Lets look at the achievements both has done in this time and compare them and see which one is better.

I'd say DS hands down.

The PSP may be more powerful, but it's games are mostly just graphically inferior versions of console games, with obvious exceptions like Lumines. It has proven to be rather lack-luster when it comes to FPS controls, too. One good thing, though, is the fighting games. They've been handled a lot better on PSP than on the DS.

The DS, though, has pretty much every other genre in the pocket. Meteos is its answer to PSP's Lumines, and it has a bunch of other good puzzle games like Tetris, Pokemon Trozei, etc. Rayman, Mario 64, and New Super Mario brothers are awesome, and it has games that jsut wouldn't work as well on the PSP, like Phoenix Wright and the Feel the Magic games.

Plus, the DS has possibly the first competitive handheld First Person Shooter in Metroid Prime Hunters. And the DS can play all GBA games, which, kind of rocks.

Of course, I may be biased as my PSP has a freaking dead pixel.

Yeah i'm pissed after they updated the PSP and no more emulation.

Also anyone going to get DS Lite?

I've seen a couple of DS lite recently, as I'm part of a Nintendo group that meet every month, and some have imorted it from Japan. It looks great, the screen has way more lightning on it, you can iluminate a room with it, not kidding. It's smaller, of course, the power plug is different, and the battery lasts longer. A good improvement over the old DS, but a bit too early I belive.

Having owned and played both of them, I find both of them to be a little lackluster.

Well, did you say your brother sold you DS or something a while back?

The DS currently has some really great things going for it, and some big games coming, like Final Fantasy 3, Zelda Phantom Hourglass, and Super Mario World 3: Yoshi's Island 2.

Actually, I'd avdise against it unless you know you'll have someone to play multiplayer against. The single player game isn't worth $40. Not bad, but not worth $40.

I haven't decided which of the DSs I will be buying. The DS Lite is really nice looking, but if the discounted price on the DS is really good, I may just opt for that.

Overall, I prefer the DS to the PSP. My brother has a PSP and he wants me to get one so we can link and play each other. LINK?!?! I told him the DS that I will be getting can play on a wifi network with anyone anywhere. His jaw nearly hit the ground.

Plus, the other big benefit of the DS is the Opera browser that will be coming out later this year. Surf the web on your DS. How cool is that? Diggnation previewed the Opera browser recently and they loved it. They said one screen is the full view of the page you are on while the other screen can be set to show a magnification of the area of the full screen that you tap with your stylus. Very cool.

And the new Super Mario Bros... friggin' awesome.

I've got a couple friends, one of whom has one already and one who is going to, and I think we might link up for some Mario Kart DS races. Cool to think I can play them and one is in Washington State, the other is in Georgia, and here I am in Illinois.

Yeah, that is very cool.

My bro has a PSP, and it's pretty cool, but I've always been a Nintendo kid. I haven't got any console (handheld or otherwise) right now, but I would probably buy a Nintendo on name alone.

Actually, the PSP has ad hoc and WiFi like the DS, and it also comes with a built-in web browser.

Though, I'm sure the DS and Wii's Opera will be easier to interface with because of the touch screen and motion sensitivity respectively.

I got it really just so I can play it online. Also I'm going to get tetris next.

PSP to me seems like the bastard child of an iPod and a PS2 and in that respect, I feel as though it is a jack of all trades and a master of none.

All games for the DS, on the other hand, seem to be developed specially for the DS, and so I think it comes off as a far stronger gaming platform.

What we've done in the city I used to live, about 60 miles away from where I currently live, is to gather DS owners (and GBA owners too) into our Nintendo meetings, which were organized on this local nintendo forum I (seldomly) post. I strongly enncourage doing the same, while I play Mario Kart DS over the internet, it's not the same as having all 8 people playing it side by side - plus I get to see all the new games and play those, like New Super Mario Bros, Fifa 2006, Brain Age, check out the DS lite, and all that stuff. On a previous meeting, we had a representative for the local Nintendo office, and we are going to be "official"... Not the kind of thing I would be doing with a PSP. But don't worry, the PSP new model will offer a touch screen *sigh*...

I hear ya man, and what really gets me is when they play their music through the shitty PSP speakers at full volume on a public train.

Anyway, this is only vaguely related to the thread, but I found a NES in my in-laws' basement today and hooked it up to play Super Mario 1. The Legend of Zelda cartridge doesn't work though

Ouch, man.

Well, you could try the NES Classics Legend of Zelda cartrige for the GBA.

Is GBA basically a handheld NES? If so, I might just get one. I'm not a big gamer but I dig the classics.

Actually, it has the graphic capabilities of a SNES, plus some. They released "Super Mario World" on GBA, which is my favorite Mario game.
