What is it that holds back certain urban areas from offering DSL. I mean, one half of my city has it and the other half doesn't. What gives? I can understand rural areas. But I'm in a relatively large suburb that's growing by leaps and bounds. One of the fastest growing suburbs in Chicagoland.

THE EXPLANATION THAT I GOT WAS THAT THE DSL LINE COULD ONLY RUN UP TO AND NO FURTHER THAN THREE MILES FROM THE SERVER. THAT WOULD MEAN THAT THERE WOULD HAVE TO BE A SERVER EVERY THREE SQUARE MILES. I FIND THIS REALLY HARD TO BELIEVE.

Yeah, that does seem like a rather arbitrary number. I studied networking (only the basics) and I never heard anything about a 3 mile segment length. Weird.

That sounds like the same line of crap Telus fed to my in-laws. They said that the reason their DSL connection wasn't always up was that there was too much resistance on the phone line because it (1) had too many phones hooked up; and (2) was too far from the portal, yet even after they wired a new line into the house the connection was spotty. Sounds like ADSL providers need to get their stories straight.

AN AOL TELEMARKETER CALLED ME THIS MORNING. HE SAID THAT I COULD GET WIDEBAND DSL WHERE I LIVE. I CALLED HIM A F@#$ING IDIOT. HE THEN TOLD ME THAT AOL IS EVERYWHERE. I ASKED THEN WHY DID THEY TELL LAST WEEK THAT IT WASN'T AVAILABLE WHERE I LIVE? HE STAMMERED FOR A FEW SECONDS. I TOLD HIM TO GO SELL CRAZY SOMEWHERE ELSE; WE'RE ALL STOCKED UP HERE.

Phone company. Southwest Bell Company, I believe. One of the Baby Bells that happened in the mid 1980s due to the break up of Ma Bell because of antitrust laws.
