Custom Crawl Creator: Revisited (A Free Blender Project for Fan Editors)

A while ago Adywan posted this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F51kdD6raUc

This video highlighted what the crawls for his Revisited saga would look like and how they were all going to follow the same timing and correcting the problems After Effects had with antialiasing on the crawl once it got too far away in the distance. This got me to thinking “I want my crawls to match Ady’s”. So with some scouring the internet I found that our own DigiModification had done some work in Blender, and came up with a project file that can be freely downloaded and used to create your own custom crawl. However, this project came with some limitations and would only output the crawl itself and the crawl that it made was not in line with Adywan’s. So, I took it upon myself to recreated what Ady had done using Blender instead of 3DSMax.

With my project the output is not only very close in timing, but this project also outputs everything from the “A long time ago…” text and the “Star Wars” logo. As of right now this project is not available, however I will be releasing it as soon as I have the guide finished.

But as a way to hold you over here is a quick comparison video I made of the original video Ady posted and my project showing how close I have been able to get. Ganted, its not perfect, but i think it is as close as you can get.

hope you all like it

Very nice. Even though I prefer intentionally varying the crawls from film to film rather than having them as uniform, this would still be useful in generating the receding STAR WARS logo free of aliasing.
Nice work!

I really appreciate everyone’s support! I really didn’t think that I would get much of a response. I am considering putting it up on the spleen. What do you all think?

Well, I find that any form of preservation and making available for others only increases the likelihood of others finding and using it. Too bad I don’t have a way to ween my way into the spleen. I’m sure I miss out on some sweet content.

Hey JackPumpkinhead,

I never was able to get the logo zoom out to work on the revisited project file. Was that not included or was my system apparently wonky?

Also, I’m hoping it’s ok to let everyone know that a vegas project file was added to the custom crawl creator I had created some time ago.

I’m not sure what you mean. If you downloaded the zip and followed the instructions, it should work when you output. The logo won’t show up in the preview window because it’s visibility has been turned off.

Is there a way I can make the crawl go by slower?

Not enough frames, so it looks laggy, although that just got me thinking, maybe I can just up the framerate in blender. I will be trying that.

I seem to remember that the travel distance of the crawl file in blender efdwctedbthe speed as well. I’ll have to go and look at my project file to verify that though.

Found some possible tweaks to change the speed in blender.

  1. Under the frame rate option it should say “Time Remapping:” with two arrows, one says “Old:100” the other says “New:100” Adjust the values and it may change the speed.
  2. Under “Frame Range” change the “Frame Step:” value

That worked. Thanks!

Edit: I had a problem, but I figured it out. Just in case anyone has the same problem, the starfield was zoomed in pretty far, because I made the output crawl 720p, but my input starfield was 1080p.

Make sure, when using this, the output crawl has the exact same dimensions as your starfield.

I used method 1. Remapped 100 to 200. Worked perfectly.
