Yes! Finally this masterpiece deserves the treatment it deserves. If this one's on par with Criterion's Seven Samurai DVD/BD, then it could very well be much better release than Toho's. Oh, and the icing of the cake:

Both versions in consistent quality? Is there a positive equivalent to our beloved "Noooooooooooo"?

Where is my George Lucas Trilogy (THX 1138, American Graffiti, Star Wars)?

We shouldn't let the disappointment of Star Wars's situation mare the enjoyment of great films being finally given great releases.

We shouldn't, but it's hard, you know?

They have a purple print of the US version, and supposedly it includes more than any version previous. Most versions released since the '70s have supposedly been based off a TV edit. And Criterion is remastering the film themselves. Warb, I'd say this is worth the double-dip!

"HA, Ha, you r ghey" was probably a hilariously insulting comment in Elementary and Middle School, but its not cooly insulting anymore and its certainly not funny: it makes people who say it look like, well, an "inbred monkey." TheSessler

They almost once got godzilla, rather gojira on laserdisc but it was cancelled you can still find the page for it on laserdisc database.

The other companies dvd with commentary was basically a ripoff of what criterion usually offers, minus a good quality dvd print of the film.

I still find it disgusting that as a company toho allegedly destroyed those old negatives as a clearance move, they also did so with kurosawa films.

In the past before the saving of such things became a profitable asset.

This is wonderful news! ^_^

It will be great to see both cuts in stunning HD and better transfers than the Blu-Ray Classic Media released.

I wish they'd release Godzilla 1985.  I liked that one.

Criterion actually announced they were going to release five of the Godzilla films on Laserdisc back in the 90's, but they were all cancelled without much explanation.

Nice they finally got this one.

Can't wait for this release but why are they using a Millennium era design for the packaging? =/

If anything I just hope that in the subtitles they actually refer to him as Gojira. It bugged me that in the classic media release they bothered to label the film as such but then went and always referred to him as Godzilla during the film.
