Convert to a DVD I can watch on PS3

I’ve downloaded the AVCHD version of all three films. They look great on my computer but I’d like to play them on the big screen through my PS3. I don’t have a Blu Ray burner but the AVCHD versions are just small enough to fit on a dual layer DVD R which I can write to. How can I burn the films to a DVD that’s readable by PS3? I tried the method suggested in another thread (http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/How-to-play-Despecialized-Edition-V25-on-a-PS3-if-you-dont-have-a-BD-burner/id/15996) to write the films to a USB for playback on a PS3 but despite about ten tries I haven’t been able to get that to work, and I don’t want to shell out for a Blu Ray burner for this one application so the DVD approach is most logical for me. I’ve converted and streamed the films to the PS3 with the PS3 media server but from experience with other films it always looks much better when played natively on the PS3.
