Color matching and prediction: color correction tool v1.3 released! — Page 32

Perhaps odd question - I remember reading a while back that you were choosing between RGB and CMYK for balancing. Would there be a way to balance to both, so that the colors are adjusted by 6 offset variables instead of 3?

Preferred Saga:
1/2: Hal9000
3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan
6-9: Hal9000

If I use this on transformers, will hot rod become red again? Instead of pink?

If you have a DVD reference with good colors, sure…

The balancing is done in the RGB color space. Earlier I used the CMYK color space, because I erroneously assumed this was the relevant color space for film. It is possible to balance in multiple color spaces, but I haven’t really looked into this.

I just used your tool for the first time to try to remove the teal tint of the AOTC blu-ray by comparing it to the DVD and I’m amazed! It worked great on my first try and it looks sooo much better.

But since this is not intended as a perfect color grading for AOTC but just a quick edit for my personal viewing at home, I figured that I don’t want to do the correction scene by scene or even shot by shot. So I took multiple frames, placed them next to each other in one image and tried to compare them. That worked quite well when taking four screenshots (thus creating a 4k image), but when I took 16 the progress bar of the progress bar did not move at all. Is that because I gave up too soon or is there some kind of image size limit?

Yes, 16 images have 25 million pixels for each color channel, which is too large.

Damn. What would be the maximum amount of images I could use then?

That’s what I intend to do but I was wondering how small they need to be.

I think 10 is the max at 1080p, assuming you remove the black bars. Like Harmy said, you can reduce the size of the original frames, before reading them in the tool.

Very interesting !

Williarob, is still projected a SSE v.2 using the new scan of the LPP ?

Because, if we had a full Eastman film (I assume Poita has a lot of Eastman reels scans for SW), wouldn’t be a good way to use the Eastman scan color balanced using a set of neutral shots for each reel, as color reference, the LPP balanced with dedication as color reference, a shot by shot color matching and a final luminance adjustment ?

IMO, cleaning this hypothetic Eastman print would be better than cleaning the LPP a second time.

But I’ve read there are exciting things happening under Team Blu’s banner, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a project similar to that ! 😉

There still was a problem with some of the LUTS created by the last version of the tool. Send me a PM if you’re interested…

Hey Dre,

any chance you could add an “average color match models” option in your tool?

Not sure how you could do it, but if it would allow you to load the saved .mat files from say 10 different shots, and find the average of the adjustment values. It could offer a good compromise for whole film, single pass blanket color corrections.

That seems like a good idea. I will look into it…

Question, for the technically inclined:

Is there a LUT equivalent of boosting/changing the hue of individual colors in Photoshop? I recall Mike mentioning how the red was unreasonably boosted on the BD. Out of curiosity, I was attempting to manually match a shot of R2 on the blu ray to Dre’s 4K77 grade, when I ultimately went to change the individual hue/saturation of the blues and reds:

For a still image, it’s a fine solution. But if I were to try and match my edit using the correction tool, the completed model would yield corrupted results. Is there any way to work around that incompatibility?

There should be no problem matching your correction with the color matching tool. While the result cannot be exactly replicated, when you opt to adjust individual colors, you can get pretty close. I tried it myself:

Here’s the LUT, that I’ve tested in Davinci Resolve, and works:

Who’s color correction of a new hope best right now?

I’d say a mix of Dre’s for 4k77 and Neverars.

Could you or someone please either put comparisons of the two comparisons or them and the blu ray or tell me where i can find pics or video from them? I just want to see for myself.

You can find more info about NeverarGreat’s bluray regrade in his thread:
