Can anyone recommend to me some decent space opera novels?

Hi

I really don't know many sci-fi authors at all except for the classics. I'm looking for some  novelists to check up the next time I'm at the library. Light on the science and big on scale and action.  Pure escapism and maybe a little cheese on the side.

I'm sure you guys can recommend some to me.

I read Starhammer by Christopher Rowley.  That was interesting, and quite a bit cheesey.

Someone was just at my desk and I recommended Eric Nylund's Halo books to them.  I don't see why I shouldn't do the same to you.  ;)

And, maybe a slight breach in protocol here, but the Annihilation books in Marvel Comic's series are really good.  There are 5 HC/TPBs that you can get the first two series in.  After that, it gets more complicated.

Likewise, I just read Geoff John's Green Lantern Rebirth and Sinestro Corps War.  Those were alright.  I'm not a DC guy, and I found these 3 TPBs to be mostly self contained.

"Yeah, well, George says a lot of things..." a young 1997 xhonzi on RASSM

"They're my movies." -George Lucas. 19 people won oscars for their work on Star Wars (1977) and George Lucas wasn't one of them.

Have you read the lensman series by E.E. "doc" smith?

 "Deathstalker" by Simon R. Green.

You don't get any bigger on scale and action, told at a breakneck pace, with great characters, light on the science and just a pleasent hint of cheesiness. An actionpacked epic overflowing with fun ideas, great heroes, loathsome villains, and lots and lots of fighting.

And, perhaps this went without saying... but there are some good Star Wars EU books out there too.

I actually really enjoyed "Tale from Jabbas Palace" all the double dealing and lies. I especially liked the story of the gamorrean guard.

It's my guilty pleasure, but I honestly felt that the book captured the atmosphere of all the dark recesses, passages and shady figures you see and imagine in the palace.

Although I'm not sure it entirely fits your description, I highly recommend Ender's Game.

I know so little about new authors and other books that I am interested in anything you guys will recommend. I will look it up, I'm pretty sure I've heard that title before.

I tried that, and was bored to tears a hundred pages in, struggled a bit further, and finallay collapsed into a heat from exposition-exhaustion.

Perhpas their influence is mighty, but they didn't seem to age well.

That's how I feel about H.G. Well's War of the Worlds.

I had the pleasure of reading that for the first time recently (After owning the Richard Burton musical on CD)

I enjoyed it, I especially like the seemingly little known fact that a couple of fighting machines are actually destroyed by soldiers during the initial conflict. Of course, the retaliation by the others is always a devastating counter. The description of the Thunderchild's sacrifice was particularly moving. I just knew before I saw Spielburgs film that they were going to give the tripods shields.

But yes, the english is quite quaint. Because I am very immature I recall an  interesting excerpt which has not aged well at all:

"His landlady came to the door, loosely wrapped in dressing gown and shawl; her husband followed ejaculating."

alot of people probably wont agree with me, but the starwars novels are actually pretty good, the ones that arent clone wars related. I recommend, the new jedi order, the legacy of the force, thrawn trilogy, and the news one i forget the series name but they are like on book 3 or 4, its great as well.

oh and for authers, troy denning, james lucinco, tim zhan, are all awesome, so check out there other works.

nice guys finish last

My favorites are still the classic Bantam SW novels-the ones that actaully have a sense of escapism in them. The best SW I have ever read is Brian Daley's Han Solo Trilogy (Star's End/Revenge/Lost Legacy).

The best thing about the Clone Wars was Shatterpoint. It is essentially Star Wars meets Apocalypse Now.
