Battlestar Galactica (original) fan edits (Released)

Hello,

New here, and a couple people suggested I stop by. I’ve been playing around with some fan edits of some original Battlestar Galactica episodes. So far have done Living Legend, Experiment in Terra, Hand of God and the Galactica 1980 episode Return of Starbuck.

Currently I have Living Legend and Return of Starbuck posted on demonoid.com.

Living Legend fixes a few edits, works in some deleted scenes from the DVD release (although the quality difference is noticable) and added some new SFX shots. Mostly supplimenting the current footage with some CGI.

Return of Starbuck is much more of a re-work, in fact so much so that it has a new title of “Judgement Day”. This re-edit removes all the Galactica 1980 aspects and tries to place it with the original series. I think of it as an episode from what would have been the second season. All the Viper footage in the beginning is new, as well as a Viper design that is based on Tom DeSanto’s/Bryan Singer’s Galactica production designs. Also tried to wrap up the end a little more than what was in the original episode. And the title change was done since this is not really the “return” of Starbuck any more since it is supposed to be part of the original.

Once these seed for a while I’ll get the remaining eps uploaded. Which are…

Experiment in Terra was my first re-edit attempt which mainly removes the big planet shield from the end of the ep. (for those who remember) Also tweaked some shots, added in some subtle fx, and mixed in some of the deleted shots.

Hand of God, worked in additional FX to add to the battle at the end. Also gave a little more of a clue to the moon landing transmission’s origin. (again, for those who remember)

Please take a look and let me know what you think.

Also, if I do any more, I’ll likely do the pilot (Saga of a Starworld). That one is a little bigger than the others, but it is the only other one I would like to do something with.

Thanks,

Dave

welcome to OT, dkerin. I am glad, you found your way here. I find it very interesting you make your Battlestar galactica edits and add CGI effects. From what I have seen on youtube it looks quite cool.

Nothing about fanediting is easy.

May I ask why you cropped it to 1.78:1? Okay, widescreen looks cooler, but you cropped of some heads and toes

I've watched them both, and overall they were quite good. But I have an issue with cropping them into 16:9

In particular because your title sequence doesn't allow for TV overscan where you've placed the credits, they are very close to the edge of the image, so they are only partly visable when watching on a 16:9 set. A shame because I felt it tainted what was otherwise an excellent job. I wondered if perhaps you'd croped these after you'd completed them as an afterthought.

The CGI was quite good as well. Judgment Day is a huge improvement on the original Return Of Starbuck episode. I definitely look forward to more of your edits of BSG. I would prefer them to be in 4:3 though.

So what software did you use for the new FX out of interest?

I initially cropped because I started with some source material from the DVD release of the "movie" version which was in a cropped letterbox format. One of those little decisions that I didn't think much of then, but realized I didn't have to do when I have the series set right on the shelf. Plus when I did the first one it was kind of a just for fun off shoot, and didn't think I'd do others.

While I like the "wide screens", knowing it is actually cropped is not quite the same.

When I get around to doing the pilot, I'll leave it 4:3.

The CGI FX is created with 3d Studio Max. And again, being more for my enjoyment and not wanting to drive myself insane with details, I could have really strived for more detail in the CGI, but for its purposes it worked for me.

Glad you like them and I'll be getting Experiment in Terra up within the week. I'll post here to let you know. However I apologize in advance... it is in the letterboxed format.

All the best,

Dave
