I don't suppose there's an HD version of uncropped version of entire trilogy, is there?

Would love to have that one in HD as I grew up watching it and whenever I see widescreen version I just can't help but feel constantly that stuff is missing...

Granted, in some shots you actually get to see more of the picture in widescreen, but in most you end up losing more than you gain.

Here are some comparison pics:

I don't really understand this post, aren't the blurays just like what was shown in the theaters back then?  (1.85:1 Widescreen)

I doubt will ever be a full screen HD release of anything, let alone BTTF.

Unless I'm interpreting this wrong this seems incorrect.  Older movies like 'It's a Wonderful Life' and Disney's 'Alice in Wonderland' for example are full screen and HD and I know many more are too.

I think he means the days of 4:3 open matte transfers of widescreen movies are pretty much over now that 16:9 is the standard.

There is the possibility BTTF might play on one of the retro SD digital subchannels out there now. They are all broadcast in 4:3. Just when I thought I'd never see a pan and scan version of Lawrence of Arabia ever again!

Counter-point: Evil Dead was released on Blu-Ray open matte, even though it was likely shown in theaters in 1:85. Of course, they included a widescreen version as well.

Speaking of odd TV broadcasts, I saw Videodrome on Encore in open matte HD. Sadly couldn't record it. Maybe Back to the Future will be shown in the same way.

To me, the Full Frame edition of BTTF looks better than every other DVD edition that you can find. The quality is amazing, there's less MPEG compression artifacts than the widescreen versions. The colors as well look fantastic.

Full Frame DVD:

Would be cool to have something like "Christopher Nolan's IMAX". I hope you guys know what I mean... With all the Visual Optical FX in Widescreen (they were shot in VistaVision), but the main film with 1.33:1 aspect ratio. Well, we will need a very nice upscale...

From what I understand, Evil Dead was originally made to be shown in the theaters as open matte but composed so that it could be matted to 1.66:1 or 1.85:1. The wide-screen version was originally created for the DVD release to allow for more picture detail and carried over to the Blu-Ray release.

The FF looks better to me also.  The blu looks way to red and seems to have higher contrast...

Any interest in this still?

BTTF is DNR-free on Shaw on Demand and I can record it over HDMI, but I'm not sure if it will be better or worse than the H264 Russian capture. This is just MPEG-2 source.

Oh, I'm interested. Could you please capture it and post here some screenshots? Thank you.

I'm definitely interested too! Go for it man! An MPEG2 source can be amazing if the bitrate is high enough.  So, if you have spare time and if that doesn't bother you to capture it, you should give it a try for sure.  ;)

Is there an H264 source for Bttf2 as well? Cause if not I would capture that instead.

Rutracker.org (Russian) has H264 versions of the whole trilogy.

Sorry, I was referring to full screen versions of films that were intended to be presented theatrically in widescreen. Obviously Films Like The Wizard of Oz and Casablanca will remain in their proper aspect ratios.

Hi folks. I just did a capture of the PCM audio from the 1991 laserdisc for another project, and thought you might be interested in hearing it. This is the disc:

 photo bttflasersmall.jpg

I should say up front that I can't be certain if this is the theatrical mix - I guess some short-term remixing might have taken place for home video, I haven't found any evidence either way - but it's probably the closest we're going to get. It sounds considerably better than the Blu-ray DTS, at any rate!

Anyway, I've synced it to the Blu-ray video so it's an easy job to create a disc or file with tsMuxer or whatever. If you'd like a listen, drop me a pm.

That's a real "80's film-look" haha.

That looks amazing. My laserdisc copy must have faded because the colours are no where near as good as that.

Well, in fact it's the first version that was available in France and the quality is not the best but still pretty good. It was manufactured by Philips. Some years later Pioneer made a remastered edition of this LD. I heard the Pioneer looks amazing compared to the Philips first release.

Philips: http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/29337/082-892-1/Back-to-the-Future-(1985)

Pioneer: http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/28457/PLFFB-34231/Back-to-the-Future-(1985)

Plus, the cover of the Pioneer remastered edition is damn beautiful! I'll try to get my hands on one of these copies as soon as possible.

I don't know if that has something to do with how the colors look, but i recently bought this LD and it was in mint condition, the seller told me that he played the disc only once.

Very, very, very interested. Shot you a PM. Plan to marry it with HDTV rip video (superior quality).

So, i finally saw the HDTV version, and i have to say i'm a little bit disappointed.  It's not the version i was looking for, it's quite good but it's a shame compared to a BDrip that is the same size.

Sometimes, a screenshot is worth a thousand words

Here they are (resized for the web)

I found these "GoodHDTV" screens a while ago. The link is on the first page of this topic. I don't know how to find these versions they look so perfect. This time they DO look better than the actual Blurays.

Has anyone ever had any luck finding the audio that's edited for TV?

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

The "good" screenshots come from the Japanese network WOWOW. Notice the hardcoded Japanese subs on the other images in that AVSforum thread.

I don't know where you'd find that capture nowadays. If it was posted to Usenet, it was likely a long time ago; it's probably past the retention periods of the newsreaders, and it doesn't show up on Binsearch.

These pre-Blu HDTV rips need to be preserved, they must not be allowed to vanish into the mists of time, so I'd love to get my hands on this WOWOW rip someday. Maybe ask the guy who posted the images on that forum?
