Are The Star Wars Movies Your Favourite Movies?

 (Edited)

Again, if there is a thread like this that has escaped my notice, please excuse me and lock this down.

Much as I absolutely love the OOT, they wouldn't feature in my top 10 favourite films, which goes like this...

1. Jaws

2. The Thing (1982)

3. Apocalypse Now

4. Lawrence Of Arabia

5. Barry Lyndon

6. Seven Samurai

7. Raiders Of The Lost Ark

8. Zulu

9. SE7EN

10. 2001: A Space Odyssey

Of course, they wouldn't be too far behind...

What about you guys?

With some close competition, "Star Wars" is definitly my favorite movie.

The first two still are high up in my list of film favourites, they are more important than favourite though for me.

Star Wars the second film I saw in the cinema and the tender age of seven opened my eyes very early to so many things.

I became hooked on orchestral music because of the score.

My awareness of British cinema expanded greatly very early too via the Alec Guinness and Peter Cushing connections.

I don't remember even picking up a comic book until Star Wars came out.

I had virtually no awareness of Japanese culture until Star Wars came out and started watching Japanese films and television because of the obvious points of inspiration.

Collecting Star Wars figures got me interested in collecting things generally.

Star Wars was a compendium of references and ingredients so it was very inspirational for growing a broad interest leading to a broad education.

Along side my life long attachment to Doctor Who, which is also eclectic, Star Wars has been a formative touchstone for the duration of my life.

I'd say that the OT had the greatest impact on my life. But they aren't my favorite movies. They came out when I was a kid and I really loved them. Ever since I grew up, my tastes became more refined. So much so that I can't really pick out my "favorite movie".

Nevertheless, Star Wars has a special place in my heart. And making my own fan edit has become one of my latest hobby projects.

Star Wars: Spirit of '77 fan edit project.

Yes. Star Wars, Empire, and Jedi are my three favourite movies (in that order). I also consider Star Wars to also be one the greatest films ever made.

I'm not sure you meant it this way, but personally I don't think there's anything 'unrefined' about "Star Wars."

Jaws over Star Wars? o_O

Sometimes I'll specify my "favorite non-Star Wars movies" when asked what my favorites are, and I do kind of consider Star Wars in a class of its own. Plus it helps when people don't take Star Wars seriously as a favorite movie 'because everybody likes Star Wars.' But Star Wars are my favorite movies.

lol, that raised my eyebrow also. Certainly there are more polished, artistic, and philosophically deeper movies. But I don't think that makes them any more competitive with Star Wars as the greatest movies of all time. My tastes have certainly expanded but Star Wars remains atop the heap for more than nostalgiac reasons.

#1 for me is Wim Wenders ''Until the End of the World.'' I have the 5 hour director's cut on dvd which for me was a film holy grail.  Coincidentally, it was reported in the news yesterday that scientists are learning how to tape record (so to speak) dreams and the images shown were dead ringers for how Wim imagined it in act III of this movie in 1991!

#2 Robert Altmann's ''Short Cuts'' - I generally like all things Altmann but the kicker with this movie is that most of the characters are genuinely unlikable people and by the end of the show you care about what happens to each one of them.

#3 Kristof Kieslowski's ''Three Colours'' trilogy (I consider franchises's one thing, sorry PT haters).  This trilogy should be required viewing for anyone interested in film.

#4 Network.  Brilliant movie making by adults for adults.

#5 SW franchise.  I'm an old sentimental fool.

#6 Wings of Desire - cinema as poetry, the last few minutes seem to me too long and tacked on, almost a cinematic speed bump.

#7 The Elephant Man - bests my love for Blue Velvet, damn near the closest that cinema comes to poetry.  This movie grabs me by the shirt and holds on tight every time I watch it.

#8 A Christmas Story - ditto sentimental foolishness.  Nearly every line, shot composition, etc is pitch perfect in this, I'd be hard pressed to change much about it.

#9 High Fidelity - you'd think if someone made a biopic you'd get royalties but it doesn't always work that way.

#10 Back to the Future trilogy - my feelings on the first one are much the same as A Christmas Story, a damn near perfect film.

The OOT, yes.  Having spent this past week watching harmy's despecialized editions reaffirms it for me.

normally don't make top ten lists because i can change the order depending on how I feel but also because the OOT would automatically take 3 spots, making the remaining 7 harder to narrow down (which would usually be comprised of ROTLA, Jaws, Halloween, Goodfellas, GodfatherI/II, spirited away, Grave of the Fireflies, Fantasia, FRWL, Superman).

Interesting, I just recently realized that I'll have to change my longstanding top 10, which would have been:

1) Forest Gump

2) Amelie

3) Pulp Fiction

4) The Empire Strikes Back

5) Fellowship of the Ring

6) Star Wars

7) Pelisky

8) Jurassic Park

9) American Pie

10) Jak basnici prichazeji o iluze

But I just recently realized that I'm gonna have to re-evaluate the list, as I'm sort of getting tired of some of these films (having watched them so much) and there were some awesome new films in the past few years, so now it would probably be something like:

1) In Bruges

2) Amelie

3) Inception

4) The Empire Strikes Back

5) The Boat that Rocked

6) Inglorious Basterds

7) Pelisky

8) Forrest Gump

9) American Pie

10) Jak basnici prichazeji o iluze

As you can see, ESB keeps a steady 4th place but STAR WARS is gone - I do love it but I'd probably watch one of the above 10 films over it if I was given the choice (depending on the conditions of course, if I was given the choice of watching any film in a cinema, the original version of STAR WARS would definitely be my first choice over any other film, but I'd take seeing Inception or Inglorious Basterds in a cinema again over the Special Edition of SW any day.)

Yep. I saw Jaws when I was 8 on it's first release...I still think it's virtually a perfect movie.

Yes.

IT'S MY TRILOGY, AND I WANT IT NOW!

Star Wars is definitely my favourite movie.  Although I love many other movies for many other reasons, Star Wars just had such a profound impact on my imagination as a kid... there were really no other movies that compared to it back in the late 70s.  It really made my imagination soar, and is probably largely responsible for my love of science fiction and fantasy today.

Plus, after all these years, it's still a really, really cool movie :)

Hey Harmy, you being Czech, do you know of the works of Jan Svankmejer?

Definitely one of my most favorite directors! I think "Little Otik" gave me nightmares for weeks!

Yeah, that's pretty cool - it's actually based on an old Czech fairy tale :-)

I wouldn't classify them as my favorite movies, but I could watch them over and over without getting tired of them more than any other films, if that makes any sense.

His version of Alice and Wonderland was captivating. It became a little tedious in places but with enough cute details to keep it going. And I made everyone I know watch Little Otik! Where is the Svankmejer thread? :p

My top 4 movies are RoTJ, ESB, ANH, and Groundhog Day.

for the longest time Star wars was my favorite movie, (all of them), but i've seen them so much now, that i can't say they're my favorite movies anymore. I really can't say what movie is my favorite.

Author

Star Wars had the most impact on me for sure, and I never tire of it.  It's also one of the few that I'd enjoy almost as much just listening to the audio, since the scenes are so ingrained in my head and I can practically quote the whole thing.  I can just put it on while I work on some errands.

But I'd have a really hard time limiting my favorite movies to 10.  My faves in no particular order:

OT, LotR trilogy, T2, Raiders, Last Crusade, Matrix, Inception, Aliens, Tombstone

If the list is expanded to include miniseries, then Band of Brothers is at the top, hands down.

I would say Star Wars and Empire are. I never like answering that question because I like a lot of movies, but as a default I say the original two Star Wars films. It's probably true, as I watch them every few weeks/months for my entire life and obsess over them to the point of writing a textbook on their origins, so it would be hard to argue otherwise. I don't know of any film I've watched even half as much as ANH. I'm sure I have literally seen it hundreds of times by now, and I'm still not bored.

Star Wars and Empire are definitely in my top ten.

Sometimes one or the other have been in the top spot, sure. Favorite or #1 depends on many factors and it changes with time/mood, etc. But they've always been floating around that top ten.

Yes, they are my favourite movies. Here's my top 10:

1. Star Wars (saga)

And now, in no specific order: The Godfather, Forrest Gump, Jurassic Park, Goodfellas, The Lord of the Rings ( probably Fellowship, if I had to pick one), Watchmen, Appaloosa, Zodiac, The Green Mile.
