Idea: An unofficial Original Trilogy Bittorrent tracker? (The PIF Tracker?)

I was just thinking, it seems to be that there are a lot of technically capable people running around on these forums…and it always seems like somebody’s trying to get something uploaded at Myspleen…so I was thinking that, wouldn’t it make sense if a tracker were set up specifically so people could share their edits and film preservation projects?

Obviously, there shouldn’t be any <span class=“Italics”>official</span> ties to this forum, but I just think it would make a lot of the projects on this board far more accessible than if they’re just paid-forward via snail mail, or occasionally upped to Myspleen. It seems to me that there would be plenty of people interested in supporting such a venture, and that it would just turn into one big happy orgy of project-sharing. And it would loosen up Rikter’s queue quite a bit, and cut down on the bitching at Myspleen.

So am I just high, or does this seem like a good idea to anybody else?

Unofficial as you might suggest, I'd still not discuss this at the forums here. MySpleen is its own site but IMHO the idea of forming something like you mention and sharing the ideas about it here might perceived as crossing the line.

Just my 2 cents.

Arrrrrrrrrrr!

Greencapt: What would be an appropriate, uh, forum for doing so, in your opinion? And then again, I think discussion here would be semi-allowable here, seeing as how often Myspleen is discussed, and Rikter maintains his queue list on this site. I think its important for discussion to take place here, as all the players and content-providers are present.

Don't get me wrong- I agree with the spirit. Just looking out for the site as a whole, especially as it gets more and more popular.

I'll suggest a name for this tracker, considering there would be a lot of fan edits on there ...

If you guys are going to go with this Bittorrent tracker, I would like to help. Please put my name down on your list.

I'd prefer to keep things very open here, but some of the swap-shop talk I'm seeing is very much against my personal beliefs regarding piracy and the spirit of the forums as a whole. DarkFox is a dick, but he made some good points.

The mods and I are finalizing new, stricter rules to rein in the questionable activity that has become fairly prevalent in the preservation forums. Some people are not going to like the changes, but if these forums are really about preservation and creativity through fan edits, they also need to be about film appreciation and respect for the content owners.

I want this site to be a fan edit hub, but I don't want it to be a file sharing hub. It has no future if that happens.

Jay--

Point taken. The line has been encroached upon a wee bit lately.

Anybody have any ideas where this discussion can be moved? Is there an IRC channel everybody hangs out on?

I would ask if there was any way that this discussion could be carried on without crossing the line...buuuuttttttt...in the face of the ongoing board changes.... :/

Maybe someone could start a Yahoo Group: http://groups.yahoo.com/

I've used them before for some clubs I was a part of and they really worked wonders. They're easy to sign up for, moderate users, etc.

Just an idea.

You can keep talking about it here until the new rules are finalized.

My problem, which is a problem I'm relying upon Moth3r and zion to help me work out, is balancing the needs of the community with social responsibility. I have no problems with people downloading fan edits--as long as they own the official release in retail form. No way to verify that, however. I also have no problems with people downloading preservation efforts, but what about projects like ocpmovie's, which are a hybrid of an old release and a current retail release? How granular do we need to get with the rules?

I want the preservation forums to thrive, and my fear is that new restrictions will send people running to other places in order to avoid the requirements set forth in the rules.

Jay--thank you for the, uh, temporary deferment of execution.

Just to quote what Eli said at the crappy backup site:
"Does anyone know how to create a tracker? how everything works? I mean torrents are a few KBs per file so hosting is easy enough as free 100mb hosting would do."

So the question at this point is: Do we just go with some free hosting, or does somebody have some spare server space and bandwidth they could loan out?

I agree totally. I'm a big supporter of fan edits and preserving out of print titles, however it should only be downloaded if it not available for sale or you own the original. Its the same with music, I own thousands of live bootlegs but would never not buy the official releases. It would be great if there was a way to verify if people owned the real things, but that is probably near impossible.

The great thing about most people in the Star Wars community, is that wether they like Lucas' policy on the originals or not, they support him financially with DVD, Toy, and Ticket sales. I think if the commercial stuff is banned, and the site encourages the sale of the retail dvds aswell, that would be a fair balance.

none--Interesting. The other thing I was thinking about was the open-source torrentbits code...but I'm not bright enough to put this into practice. So again, hosting, and know-how are major issues right now.

shaggy--No one here is advocating the trading of DVD-rips. Fan Edits, and preservations of film versions not available on DVD is all that we're talking about here.

EDIT: I found somebody that can set up the torrentbits tracker stuff. Now we need hosting.

I guess I'll try asking one more time: Does anybody have a website that they would be willing to use to host a tracker like the one I've described? If hosting can be found, everything else will fall into place.

Just an idea - but I didn't want to derail the Ace Ventura thread any further off topic.

The bandwidth requirements for a bittorrent tracker are actually quite low (because of course the actual data is transferred peer-to-peer). For a small group of sharers, it should be viable to run the tracker off your home PC, if you have a static IP and are prepared to leave your PC turned on.

Azureus has a built-in tracker. Might be worth taking a look at.

That is something I've heard of being done. And I suppose it would be pretty viable, seeing as how there are a number of people running their computer for days/weeks/god knows how long at a time. Hmmm...since trackers for small groups of people can run on pretty, eh, crappy servers, if someone had a spare computer to hook to the internet and run as a server...hmmm...

And from what I understand, even for dynamic IP addresses, there are free services (such as no-ip), that you can sign up for that give you an http address that kick a browser back to the correct IP address.

So, would it basically involve throwing the .torrent files up on a forum or site, with an announce leading to one of those redirects (like no-ip), kicking it back to the IP of the makeshift server that's hosting the tracker?

That's basically what it involves, yes.
