I like the what-ifs of Star Wars.  As some of you know, I'm interested in a Star Wars that follows a different course, such as ANH, SOTME, and a different course.  Well, the same goes for Trek.  I really would love to see Xon developed further and a series with Decker.  It wouldn't really match the present timeline, but there was a lot of cool stuff planned for the original Phase II.  It would be neat if some fans made a series in that direction.  These videos are an interesting insight.

If I were given the chance to reboot Star Trek, this is what I would do.

1. Concentrate on exploring new worlds instead of political squabbles within the Federation. Trek is in the title for a reason, after all.

2. Remove all the technobabble and bad science.

3. Make most of the human/rubber forehead aliens genetically engineered human offshoots instead of entirely different, unrelated species.

4. Redesign most of the human/rubber forehead aliens to look more alien. For example, I'd make purebred Vulcans taller, with longer faces, green skin, and V-shaped bone ridges on their foreheads.

5. Make the "rubber forehead" Klingons and the "human" Klingons two seperate species; the latter would serve as a genetically-modified subspecies of the former, created to serve as covert spies within the Federation.

Is anyone else annoyed by the fact that no one seems to remember the second half of the Live Long and Prosper greeting? Cause you know, it starts with "live long and prosper" but then the other person is supposed to respond "peace and long life."

I don't think it ever left TOS and it's bugged me on Enterprise with all the Vulcans on that show that you never hear it.

My apartment mate and I have been working our way through TOS for the last few weeks.  We made the episode selection a game of sorts. My friend will give me a stereotypical and common Star Trek related situation, theme of Character element. I then pick an episode that fits his request.  Some of things he has suggested and the episode I have picked are as follows...

 

Shuttle Craft related = Metamorphosis

Mutiny = Turnabout Intruder  

Spock uses a Vulcan Power to save the day = Is There no Truth in Beauty

Gee, what smooth floors your cave has = What Little Girls Are Made Of

That sort of thing. It's been an entertaining way to pick what episode to watch. I've personally done the chronological and production order more then a few times, and this has been a nice change from that.

That's awesome! Some friends of mine who've never seen TOS are watching random episodes based on how ridiculous the Netflix summary sounds.

 

   It's great how you can mix up TOS episodes from any season and they still flow together nicely as a continuing adventure.  The other series in the Star Trek cannon don't work that well when you mix them up across seasons.  Continuity and references to passed plot lines and character actions became much more focused in the latter shows. Not to mention the numerous cast changes. Not many TOS episodes refer to situations from other episodes. A few exceptions I can think of are the mention of The Corbomite Maneuver, and The Organian Peace Treaty. Also in the episode "Turnabout Intruder", Kirk (in Janet Lester's body) reminds Spock of situations that happened in a few other third season episodes. One being the events in "The Tholan Web". I cant seem to remember the others.

That's about it, though Spock does mention his human mother and his father being a Vulcan ambassador before "Journey to Babel". Continuity in TOS is a fleeting thing, you must treasure it when it comes.

That looks really cool.  Just even posting my post and reading yours makes me want to go out an buy it.  I know a store where it is held here in my little town.  However, I'm sure the Amazon price is cheaper, so I just have to be patient if I choose to order it instead of going for instant pleasure by purchasing it at the store.

I wish they would reprint the making of TMP book. The pages are pretty loose in my vintage copy. The section that lists the directors once being considered to helm an earlier version of the film is pretty interesting.

If the Phase II is of as great interest to you as it is to me, then let me also recommend this book called "Trek: The Lost Years" (not to be confused with JM Dillard's novel "Star Trek The Lost Years") as another source of great information about the aborted second series.

I've been a hard core Star Trek for years, and in my youth I had built up quit a collection of books involving the show.  I was much more into the background and production then in the expanded universe novels.

I've always enjoyed Trek, but my interest in it waxes and wanes: it's always something I like, just not always something I think about.  But I definitely have recently had a resurgence of interest.  Phase II in particular is extremely interesting to me.  I'll have to check out all these books you're recommending, as they sound so very interesting.  Also I'm curious about Planet of the Titans, but I know very little about that or where to research further Beyond Memory Alpha.

Trek: The Lost Years, and The Phase II book both have outlines and background information on "Planet of the Titans".  It's most defiantly focused on in these books. But at the moment I forget what book has what information about it. There is the reprinted original story treatment as far as I can remember. I'm in Hawai'i at the moment, but as soon as I return home I can let you know more information about what each book contains on that subject.

^My mom always told me I was inspiring ;)

^^I look forward to learning more about it.  It kinda saddens me Star Trek abandoned the series for the dreadful TMP.  But then I can't hate too much because without TMP there would probably have been no TWOK and all that followed (yes, I even like TFF more than most).  I really enjoy most of the TOS films, and the thought of never getting those is also a tragedy.  If there were some way we could have gotten both, I'd be a happy man :)

Now that I'm saying that, maybe one day Paramount will consider Phase II in the Prime Universe.  I doubt it though, as I think everything is going to follow Chris Pine Kirk from now on.  Too bad they don't try to appeal more to the old style fans simultaneously with parallel material.

I loved TOS when I was a kid and TWOK but my favourite incarnation of Star Trek was TMP.

It felt like traveling inside a futuristic office building.

Everyone had a desk and a keyboard and there was a staff canteen and a garage with company mini-buses.

I still prefer traveling by garden shed with a cool uncle though.

I never liked the look and feel of TNG and it's spin offs (they dated a lot quick than TOS did).

Darth_Ender, are you aware that there is a Phase II fan film series that is actually quite well funded and has had some of the original cast members on it? They have used some of the original scripts and designs. It began as a series called New Voyages I think, but they changed it to a re-creation of Phase II halfway into it.

But it is campy as crap, and is horribly acted. Despite being well funded, and having original cast members making guest appearances, they feel like mediocre fan films. The writing is really awful too. It would be pretty cool if it wasn't such an amateur feeling production.

In general I'd agree but there is at least one episode of theirs I can wholeheartedly recommend:

World Enough and Time

Great script and wonderful performance by George Takei that manages to carry the rest of the cast through. As for the others, while I haven't taken the time to watch it, I know for a fact that D.C. Fontana has written one of their scripts and I refuse to believe she'd turn out anything bad.

I love the idea of continuing adventures in the TOS era but I think it was a mistake to continue the adventures on Enterprise. She wasn't the only ship out there and it'd be fun to see what others were up to. As it is, now they have to live up to the legacies of legends. Not a situation you want to find yourself in.

I wish Starship Exeter (the fanfilm production that started it all) would release the finale of their last episode. They really nailed the look and feel of TOS when they hit their stride. It's been several years now.

Anyways, I've been watching some Star Trek: The Next Generation recently. Going through some of season 1 again.

I'm skipping parts of it. Sorta randomly. I don't know I just don't feel like watching the entirety of season 1 again. Might get into watching some TOS. Interestingly enough I've seen all of Voyager, Deep Space Nine, and The Next Generation. Yet TOS I've yet to complete watching. I guess I feel like once I've done that. That's it. No more Star Trek series for me to watch with completely fresh eyes sort of speak. I'll have completed watching all of Trek and unless there is a new series I'd just have to wait for the occasional, likely semi-annually, new stuff to be produced. I hope that they do manage to turn Renegades into a proper series.
