Aliens vs Predator [sic]

Okay, I've talked with the original Fan editor [Wraith] about this and he's given his blessings to take his ideas and go even deeper. He's a bit too busy too work on revisiting the edit himself but has given me free reign to tackle it myself.

This doesn't mean I definitely will, I'm here to gauge what other people think and decide if I can pull it off. Here are a few concepts to get the ball rolling...

http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/9141/bigpage.jpg

the first and third column are some reworking by Wraith, and the second and fourth column are some [conceptual] refinements by myself.

For those that don't know the edit was an attempt to combine both AVP and AVP:R into one continuous storyline.

I know some people are probably sick of these films and some probably choose to pretend they don't exist, which is fine, however I feel that the film/s in edited form come quite close to decent without quite getting there...

On the whole, the edits needs more focus on bringing the story lines together and that's what I'll be looking into for the most part. I will try for the most part to stay true to what Wraith already did and all credit will go where it's due. This is intended as a refinement more than a complete re-do.

What makes Wraith's edit great is that he cut all the pointless over exposition and goofy character moments leaving a more streamlined story that is more enjoyable.

What let me down was that the events from AVP:R still felt like they chugged along, and this isn't Wraith's fault, he did a lot of work here to try and make it flow, it's just a crap movie to begin with.

There were also some noticeable errors in Wraith's edit sprung from some scene re-ordering, I'll be looking at ways to fix these.

Bearing that in mind I sat down and thought about how to realistically rework the plot in a way that worked. It feels like the film makers just came at the story from the wrong angle, being that Predators are heroic and should be admired, where really these guys are monsters and villains.

So [some of] the main changes planned for AVP include -

[note some of this stuff was already covered in Wraith's edit.]

  • Prologue opening
  • new main title sequence
  • lots of Goofy character moments will be cut
  • Lex is no longer marked with Predator clan logo
  • some Weyland industries scenes moved and re purposed
  • lots of over exposition moments cut
  • more music from Alien and Predator movies

And for AVP:R

  • More focus on the Yutani corp.
  • No teenagers fighting / or at the pool / or delivering pizzas.
  • The 'Wolf' Predator is a crash survivor, not someone who arrives later.
  • The Predators are the ones who bomb the town, not the Military.
  • Lots of trimming of Dallas, He's not an ex-con now.
  • Trimming of way over the top gore for the sake of gore.
  • No more Predalien menacing women in the hospital.
  • New closing scene for something more satisfying / rewarding.

So now let's hear your biggest disappointments / annoyances with the films...

I think you pretty much covered it. Any way you can hide some of the lesser actors by cutting more dialogue. Like that one guy from AVP, who understood all of the symbols in the temple. I would rather he be silent, if not gone from the story. He is basically saying shit that is going to happen anyway. Maybe it would be more mysterious if he didn't tell us what was going on.

Of course it has been quite some time since I last saw the movie.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Okay, a few minor updates...

Having taken scissors [not literally] to each film, the combined total runtime is around 2 hours, 20 minutes. Although I do need to add a few things back in.

once that's done I'll spend some time fiddling with the audio. Then make sure it actually makes a lick of sense with all the cuts, and if all is well I'll start going through and making sure it's picture perfect, shot by shot.

:)

While tinkering with that I've been messing with photoshop on the side, First off here's some colour corrected scenes circa the final battle with the Queen in the snow...

and here's a quick and dirty scar removal - the scene where she gets it is difinitely on the cutting room floor.

and here I'm still tinkering with colouring ideas for the Prologue sequence - I'm aiming for something of a retro look while still looking somewhat creepy...

I'm also playing with ideas like boosting the gamma during a lot of AVP:R so we can actually see what's going on. Granted, a lot of AVP:R is getting the 'snip snip' treatment.

I'm a huge fan of both franchises, and this one looks mighty nice. Keep up the good work!

That sparked my interest.

Yeah. I just don't get it - I mean, they put a lot of effort into the costumes only to shoot most of it in the dark.

Here's an opening monologue / homage i'm toying with. A chinese whisper if you will.

I wont have much time to work on the rough cut over the next week or so but I'll post any ideas i'm working on.

Great Aliens reference.
