For what it’s worth, my local event (Los Angeles) still lists 35mm 1997 Special Edition.

No it doesn’t. No mention of 35mm. It’s just the uncorrected vague text originally posted on the Alamo website.

Well, heading to this in about an hour. I’ll report back what it’s like.

I’m just here because I’m driving tonight.

Have fun, no matter what version they end up showing. 😃

I’d like to see the OT SE VHS of IV. I l ike the early terrible Jabba. Other than that I don’t need to see the OT SE’s.

Author

Well, if they run a 35m print, Weird Science Jabba is what they’ll have.

According to: Shane Mendez ‏@ShaneMendez
Guy just offered to run home and grab his LaserDisc copies
&
A few people complaining that Alamo Drafthouse is screening the 2011 Special Editions of Star Wars. Clearly advertised…

I called 3 of the theaters and asked if they knew and only one was able to say it was being shown digitally (the equipment provided by Alamo). The best response to if “they were showing the movies on film or digital” they responded that “it was going to be shown on the screen”.

Oh good, I was worried they would be shown on the restroom wall. What kind of dopey answer is that? This whole affair seems below par for Alamo’s reputation.

I don’t blame Alamo mind you, the situation with the OT is kind of complicated since the Disney deal.

Something damn well better happen in 2017 worthy of the 40th anniversary though.

Okay, it IS the 2011 master… But it’s a bit more complicated than that.

One, the colors aren’t the same. They’re almost like the colors in the early Despecialized Editions, but a bit sloppier. In my theater, there was no such thing as the color red. However, the rest of the image looked so good, I didn’t complain.

Two, the subtitles were different. Again, almost like the Despecialized subtitles. They use the same typeface as the theatrical subtitles, and have the same timing as the theatrical ones too. No fading in or out.

Three, WAY more grain than the BD’s. Like, certain scenes legitimately looked like early 35mm scans.

I’m not sure what to think.

I’m just here because I’m driving tonight.

Well, we knew the newest Reliance Media scan looked different from the Blus. Perhaps Disney accidentally sent that out?

We’re the subs below the image or in the frame?

You know, funny thing about that… I think that might have been it. I did notice that some changes weren’t enacted; for instance, in ROTJ, wasn’t the opening shot of the Rebel fleet recomposited? It sure wasn’t on this print. Matte lines everywhere! And, come to think of it, all the footage with changes was a lot less grainy than the rest…

The BD does have quite a few matte lines present in Jedi. It’s weird to hear that this might be a different master, though. Is anyone else around here going to a showing?

Interesting indeed. If this is indeed the case, it tells us that LF is at least working on something. Whether that’s simply a new big screen master for the 2011 cut or a sign they’re working on restoring the originals.

Who knows, maybe they do have a restoration for the 40th and were not ready to open the can quite yet, but figured they might as well increase the quality of upcoming screenings. Could also explain holding back a screening of the '97 cuts. They might just want to avoid over confusion if they’re indeed going to start marketing the OUT soon.

It could be RLM’s 4k remaster of the o-neg (which would still be in its '97 conformation) with the 2004/2011 changes simply plugged back in.

Mike Verta himself described the brief glimpses of the RLM transfer as looking, in so many words, “sloppy.”

Author

Hence Alamo’s original belief they would be the '97 editions, perhaps? Maybe they knew it was a new master of the O-neg but didn’t realize LF was going to plug in the '04 and '11 changes until later.

The original understanding was that it would be the 1997 35mm prints themselves, and for good reason. They were still playing in repertoire theaters as of just a couple years ago.

But yeah, that was my thinking as well upon reading Tack’s report.

Do the Reliance Media scans have more detail on them then the Blu-ray? If yes, then this move would make sense.

Another question: for the portions of the 2011 version that were left in, did they change the color timing to match the Reliance Media portions, or was it a jarring transition?

I think Reliance was done in 4K.

Yes, the color timing was altered for the scenes from the 2011 cut. It did flow alright, but it was obviously not entirely from the Blu Ray.
