Wow, this looks and sounds great. I can't wait for the cleaned up and colour-corrected version.

Please forgive me if you answered this, but will you be brightening and cleaning the image for a future release, or are you leaving that to whoever wants to use the footage for their preservations?

There are at least 3 versions of the ESB out. The original Grindhouse, a DCP cut, and the ESB deconstructed. Along with color corrected versions.

People are free to correct, and use those for their own projects.

The final cleaned version, will be based on a Fuji print, that has much better color quality and minimal damage to the print.

It will be awhile before we get around to releasing that.

Oh! I'm going to have to do some more digging for the colour-corrected ones.

Hey David,

I don't think anyone's released a color-corrected version yet but if you know what a LUT is and how to use it (I don't) you can apply bttfbrasilfan's work to the Grindhouse version yourself.  Me, personally, I just compensate a tiny bit by adjusting the hue in VLC and it looks much better.  Not perfect, but far less red.

Hmm, not sure I have the tools to apply his work, but how would you personally adjust it in VLC?

Author

Well, thanks to getting more hardware. One of the Team members is setting aside a machine to work on a cleaned version of the Grindhouse version, and possibly some color correction as well.

This will make it a 3.1 release. We will be posting some sample clips shortly.

Excellent!

In your Star Wars thread, you wrote about how some cropping was necessary to properly preserve the image. Did you already do some cropping to the Grindhouse of Empire?

Author
Time

Even if it really does need further cleaning, wow, that detail. Look at the individual water droplets on the X-wing's cockpit.

Author

Wow, just wow! I just watched the Grindhouse. I'm sorry I even mentioned I could add anything in terms of resolution. You're 35 mm preservations are now definitely at the top of my wish list. This effort is monumental.

Thanks to all your team members for making this possible!

We are projecting some ideas for the ESB Grindhouse plus v3.1, so far:

==========================================

1) It will be 720p, this is just more convenient to work in, although the source is 1080p.

2) It will be MP4/MKV file with one audio track, the 35mm theatrical.

3) The cleaning varies from about 60%-80% of all the dust and dirt. Some of the more difficult parts (strings/ropes) might still be visible.

4) Parts of it will be color corrected.

5) It will be cropped.

6) It will not be GOUT synced, or have subtitles, etc.

7) We will not be dedicating too much more time to this. It was done because we have multiple machines rendering, and this was the first test. Of course the results are being used for Star Wars and Return of the Jedi.

Great news, I can't wait. Can we use the subtitles that came with Grindhouse 1.0 ? Or the timing won't be the same ?

Author
Time

Each edit we've released has different timing, so the subtitles would be wrong.

Also, we are not cleaning the glue frames.

Team Negative1

Author

What are the glue frames, again? Are those where scene changes occur and there tends to be a strip of glue along the very bottom of the frame?

Author
Time

Yes, that is correct. Every scene change has them. Some are not as bad as others, usually some discoloration/color fringing or artifacts at the bottom of the screen:

You said you were relying on cropping for that, correct?

(also, thank you for bringing up cropping because I ended up falling down a research hole and learning way, way too much about theatrical cropping and how all of the frame isn't actually used in projection)

Author
Time

No, cropping will not solve all those issues. There is too much at the bottom of those frames. They only last for 1 frame. So they are not noticeable, unless the damage is much greater, and even then they aren't. See if you can see them in the sample videos at normal viewing speed.

I'm looking for a 1080p MKV of Grindhouse v1 with the corrected end-scene, did you release that ? On myspleen, I only found :

- a 1080p MKV without the corrected end scene.
- a .ISO with the corrected end scene.

I need it to burn my own BD with subs. Thanks !

Why would you not use the iso, then?

What it sounds like you're asking for would be for someone to download the iso and convert it into MKV format so you can convert it back to a blu-ray iso format. Is it a matter of not being able to add subs to the blu-ray easily? Still seems like the best option would be to use the corrected iso and play with that, rather than have someone make a new 20 gig upload for you.

Looking good. I know I've said it before, but what I like about the work you are doing is that the film will look like film, and not a digital video.

Keep up the good work.
