I agree that the lightning is too much to take out, brash. I don't really see a way to make it work with the other material there is. Not unless you want to do a whole lot of rotoscoping and patch it together from the other movies.

As meaningless as it is, I think the Yoda vs Dooku duel is the best we get in AOTC. They put way more thought into that one than in editing the one with Obi-Wan and Anakin. Maybe there is some extra footage on the DVD's that might help to enhance the duel a bit?

Dooku vs. Yoda duel was just horrible.

When I 1st saw it - Iwas very impressed, because it kind of looked impressive, but the 2nd time I saw it - it felt weird, like it should not be there. And now it just looks plain lame and unrealistic. PLUS - it's basically just George Lucas showing off what he can do with CGI.

And while it's all cool and everything - it's unnecessary. And what's unnecessary - deserves to be removed.

But that's just my opinion.

Is it possible to have Anakin rush at the Count and fight him a bit (no lighting just taking the fight from later in the sequence), have Dooku bring the ceiling down blocking him in (taken from his fight with Yoda) then have Obi-Wan fight a bit and almost lose then have Anakin recover and climb out of some added rubble to save Obi-Wan?

On a separate issue might it be possible to re-create this version :

Vader Shot First

of Shaak Ti's death using the other available deleted scene of Grievous killing her and footage and backgrounds from elsewhere in the film.

Vader doesn't kill enough Jedi on screen.

Also, if Dooku is a rogue Jedi in an edit, he shouldn't use the lightning either. Maybe just Force push Anakin away.

This is something I've always wanted to achieve in my edit, but I wouldn't know how to remove the lightning. The way my edit is cut at the moment, Anakin charges at Dooku, Obi yells "NO" then we cut to Padme regaining consciousness. When we return to the Dooku scene, Anakin has already been incapacitated, though we don't know how.

I actually really like the sound of that.

And Yoda vs. Dooku?  Ugh.  Just horrible.

You're kidding, right? Lol. Sorry, but whilst the Dooku vs Obi/Anakin duel might be boring and lacking in any emotion, the Yoda duel is freaking terrible.

Aside from looking ridiculous, it completely undermines what Yoda is all about.

Nope, not kidding. I think that as an action scene, maybe even as the traditional climactic lightsaber duel, the Yoda/Dooku duel is far more exciting than that hack and slash job (by which I mean the editing) of the Obi-Wan and Anakin vs Dooku fight. It was also a big crowd pleaser.

That doesn't automatically mean that it was right, but I thought it worked way better and was more pleasing to watch.

I don't really think the Obi-Wan and Anakin vs Dooku duel can actually be fixed unless someone breaks into LucasFilm's archives and steals all the footage that was shot for the duel. None of the edit really work, because there is nothing to work with.

JasonN, just the man! I've been experimenting with ways of recolouring multiple sabers at once without re-rotoscoping each one individually. Thought you might be interested in the result :)

Oops, JasonN's post was the last one there when I wrote this. Must remember to refresh...

Eh heh, not my crowd, it wasn't - most of people in the audience with me were laughing their asses off at how ridiculously stupid it was, while a few others were so royally pissed off to the point that they were swearing at the theatre screen.

I, on the other, did all my swearing at that particular moment inside my head. :P

EDIT: And John Stewart for the WIN.

^Indeed. Just because a bunch of simpletons are amused by it, and the rest laugh at its sheer stupidity, doesn't make it good by any stretch. You may have been swearing inside your head, JasonN, but I was crying. *sniff* :'(

Really started tinkering with more options I've never touched on in After effects. Now I want to say that Ive seen this done somewhere but only in pics. It sort of a comic book effect. I just rendered this clip all with the same settings. So some parts look better than others. But I think this would be a really good way to combine the films. Maybe have each scene have a page flip wipe effect.

My Episode 3 Edit Reign of the Dark Side

Looks almost like cel shading with all the oversaturated colours of the PT. I like it :)

Reminds me of that movie - "A Scanner Darkly".

Other people have suggested doing a storybook edit of the whole saga, there were some nice mockups done (I'm not sure if anything came of it though).

mrbenja0618 favoured a more painterly approach :

Yoda

haha... Yes, these were test shots for my Storybook edition of Redemption....

If only I had come up with an edit I liked, this may have seen the light of day.

One thing that has always bugged me about the Yoda and Palpatine duel in RotS is that when Yoda pushes Palps at the begining of the duel, his arms go up even before he goes flying towards his chair, and it just looks bad..... Is anyone else bothered by this?

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EY4SbBUH9hU&feature=related   It's at 1:19

Also, why does Palps laugh when he's cartoonishly dangling from the Senate seat thing?

Author
Time

Yeah, it's terrible.

On the topic of this scene, something else I'd like to see changed is to give Sidious a more decisive victory in the senate chamber battle (even if the lightsaber part is cut out).

Basically, leave Sidious standing after their lightning contest, instead of both being knocked back.... For one thing, it would get rid of the need for any more flopping about on Palpatine's part, and it would give more meaning to Yoda's ROTJ line "do not underestimate the powers of the emperor."

This would work nicely, I think, for those who want to emphasize Palpatine's power, but I know there are some who feel Yoda got short-shafted....

George went from making the Emperor spooky but wise in ESB, a twisted evil old git in ROTJ to an insane berk in a witch mask in ROTS.

Palpatine the man was rather well handled until the mask went on then everything went out the window.

Both Yoda and The Emperor need their dignity restored.

Yeah, we needs too find a way to make the Halloween Mask Palpy more like the RotJ Palps....

I love Ian McDiarmid and he was probably one of the few good actors in the prequels (IMO) but after that halloween mask was put on, I lost all hope for our good friend Palpatine.... What was with all the laughing and the infamous "POWWWWWWWWEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRR, unlimited POWWWWWWWWWWEEEEEEERRRRRRRR!!!!" line, that just was terrible to watch..... Ian did a terrific job playing the Chancellor earlier, and then we got Palpatine after a few shots of whisky.....

If you just cut out most of his laughing and over the top dialogue, you'd get a Palpatine thats closer to the RotJ one

I hate the fact that the sith borrow the same "give in to the dark side" lines every damn time they open their mouths. Originality is non-existent in the prequels.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

LoL ^^ I couldnt agree more. For me at the very end of RoTS when Papatine is looking at Vader finally fully suited up....that's when he's at his best and most subdued. He even looks much more like the ROTJ Palpatine. That scene plays brilliantly as though it could almost fit in ROTJ.....minus the "nooooooooooo" part which literally sucked all the credibility out. Aside from that last second hiccup Ian's performance there was spot on.

But as it's been mentioned his work also w/o the mask was pretty much fine as well. He just went waaaaaaaaaay overboard though with the Palpatine overacting. He became a friggin' cartoon. I actually felt awkward watching his scene with Mace in the theater.

Speaking of the "nooooooooo" iMo the easiest way to get rid is to just add in the french audio which is just a scream. OR perhpas JEJ has screamed in some other film he's been in and that can be tweaked and added in.

Author
Time

The NOOO honestly doesn't bother me much, but if you're changing it, I don't know if you even need a substitute for the scream at all. Just rearrange the dialogue (with a snippet or two from other Vader lines) to have his reaction to the news one of instant outrage that quickly is replaced by self-hating depression:

PALPATINE: It seems, in your anger, you killed her.

VADER: WHAT? No, I - she was alive! I...couldn't have...

Don't have him destroy the droids (CGI here always looked iffy anyway) or break off the table, either - just some subtle Force-shaking, but end either on a close-up of his face or Palpatine's.

Really?

I thought the room wrecking was the only bit of that scene that worked everything else was laughably bad.

Vader limply snapping out of his chair like a three year old pretending to be Kong.

Hayden's lamentable lack of physical presence in that suit.

Palpatine leering like Magenta watching Janet Weiss getting dirty in Rocky Horror and to cap it all off "Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo".

It's the most limp lettuce in cinema history and it's meant to be the crowning moment of the PT.

Author
Time

The scene went WAAAY down-hill once that ironing board Vader was on rises, before that it was ok (Other than when the mask is lowered onto Digital Hayden who's face was hit by a train)

One of the main problems is that the only things that we hear come out of Vader's mask in the whole movie  are (Correct me if I'm wrong and he says something else too) "Where is my wife :(" and "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" which makes first time viewers think that Vader is a total *gasp* normal person caring about his wife! Not some bad-ass villian as he's portrayed as in the originals. This ruins the character for most people...

And then theres when Vader wobbles off his recliner and the way he walks, it looks like Hank Hill's dad.

The scene could of basically gone like this, it'd still get the same response (Laughter and mass suicide)

Vader: Wheres my wife that I just choked to death? *Sad face*

Palpatine: Lord Vader, *Laughs* it seems in your *laughs* rage that you *laughs* killed her *laughs* but who needs *laughs* girls anyways? Here *laughs* at the Empire, it's all men! *laughs*

*The song "It's Raining Men" plays in the background*

Vader: What? No, thats impossible even though I just saw her died in front of me!

*Peg-leg Paul then wobbles off of his fold-up Ping-Pong Table*

Vader: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

But thats just my vision, feel free to flame my opinion :D
