I thought that Rambo 2 was ok actually, but First Blood was definately a great movie. Rocky as well. Those two and Demolition Man were probably his best three movies. Who knows, maybe if he hadn't done the sequels, HE'D be the gubenour of California.

The problem is that even 10-year old rumors sometimes become reality... DOOM anyone?

When I first heard of the DOOM movie, I instantly thought of two things: "BOMB", and "straight to DVD". It's the #1 box office in america. What... the... hell?!

it isn't difficult to debut at the #1 position in america. the movie industry currently operates on the idea that blitz-advertising can outrun word-of-mouth. i.e. word-of-mouth is slow, so if the movie sucks, they just need to advertise it more in order to get people's money before they hear how bad it is. they also rush bad movies to DVD, further demonstrating the outrun-word-of-mouth idea. for example, xXx 2: state of the union came out on dvd literally just several weeks after it ran in theaters.

also, it isn't difficult to reach the position of "#1 ________ movie of all time" and claim that a movie made x times as much box office $$$ as star wars. for example meet the fockers was #1 live-action comedy of all time. made more money than any other live-action comedy. but that's only true if you don't consider economic inflation, and the fact that a movie ticket costs about $9 or $10 USD, whereas there used to be a time when you could go to the theater for 25 cents.

it has a lot to do with corporatization and the fast-food-chain effect, too. up till the early 1980s, there were a lot of drive-in theaters and independent theaters in the u.s.a. so it was easy for independent film-makers to get funding for a cheap little movie and have it distributed throughout various regions of the u.s.a. but they didn't need to get national distribution to make a modest profit. then most of the drive-ins closed, most of the indie film-makers started doing straight-to-VHS, and all of the theaters are now owned by a few big chains. so now there are less than a dozen films showing in mainstream theaters in the u.s.a. at any given time. people used to have a lot more to choose from... they could see hollywood movies, american independent movies, foreign independent movies dubbed into english... but now the selection is very, very narrow. people have relatively few choices, when they go to the movie theater now. it's no wonder that something like DOOM or meet the fockers is able to reach #1 so easily. it's no wonder that mcdonald's hamburgers are #1, when they're certainly not the best food in the world... they're not even the best hamburgers.

I walked by this multiplex theater yesterday, and stoped to see the movies on... and there was nothing good, nothing worth of paying to see, I just couldnt belive how bad movies are nowadays... Maybe it's because it's not summer nor xmas season, but still...

Also, I wanted to see "Good night, and Good Luck", but this movie was shown here at ONE theater, only ONE night only! Sad to see how good movies are treated like that, and crappy flicks such as Doom get 500 screens...

I feel your pain. I really want to see "MirrorMask" and it's playing very far away from me. What's the good of multiscreen theaters if they are all showing the same thing on five screens at a time?
By the way, Stallone is at it again!

theres books and magazine articles out there that accuse lucas and spielberg for ruining movies by making huge sucess of popcorn kiddie flicks. So serious films don't get the billing they deserve.

one such writer is peter biskind. he wrote easy riders, raging bulls.

I wouldn't call Jaws a popcorn kiddie flick, but yeah, Lucas and Spielberg practically created the Summer Blockbuster which is still a popular thing today. I don't think the amount of crap movies we've been getting from hollywood lately can be blamed solely on them though (maybe just lucas), nor are we in as big a cinematic hole, not after so many good movies have come out of peter jackson. Of course, every other movie has to be a sequel to something these days... so view that as you will...

Spielberg has made serious films. Schindler's List for example.

yeah but it is e.t. and indiana jones that he is worldwide known for.

Two of the people who have accused lucas of creating this current hollywood mentality, albeit very quietly are Martin scorcese and francis ford coppola.

Francis Ford Coppola even went so far to say that star wars has robbed the world of any "good" film george could've made, because of it's monster success. He thinks George should've made the advant garde films like he made at usc and thx 1138, the kind of films they talked about making at american zoetrope.

Scorsese's beef is that it is almost impossible to get grittier more violent, serious films made these days like they did in the sixties. Taxi driver for example. Movies like that got killed by a little movie called star wars.

I don't see how. Many of Scorcese's hits came after Star Wars. I don't see how Star Wars stands in the way of making more serious and/or violent films.

That is interesting. I wonder what would George Lucas be directing if he never had filmed Star Wars (because if Star Wars had floped, he would be directing porn or infomertials)

They don't really "stand in the way of" per se. It's that now that movie blockbuster mentality has struck and firmly rooted itself (since the releases of Jaws and Close Encounters and Star Wars - all Lucas and Spielberg), studios want the next big cash cow. And this tends to keep them from seriously considering some of the smaller films that are made that won't bring in much bank. Guys like Scorsese have their name which almost guarantees that their films will be made. But there are so many other filmmakers with no marquee name and no budget and little to no chance that their films will ever be seen. Thank God for Sundance and Cannes and the Web. These are the only venues for many no-name filmmakers.

According to a news report I saw today stallone is making rocky 6 and rambo 4 back to back, similar to how they reported that arnold is doing

t4 and true lies 2 back to back, cringe.

What's next, The matrix 4, die hard 4, back to the future 4, speed 3 ?

Ah, come on! The world needs more movies featuring Angelina Jolie in body-hugging gear beating the crap out of men 5 times her size.

I don't care about the beating the crap out of men part so much as I do the body-hugging gear part. I've never seen either of the TR movies thus far. Just watch scenes here and there on mute. Lovely, lovely woman.
