Arthur Jones is a racist, denies the Holocaust happened, and will likely be the only Republican on the ballot for a Chicago-area congressional seat in November.

The state GOP has denounced Jones and his candidacy, but says it had no way to stop him.

“We’ve tried to do everything we possibly could to prevent this person from getting on the ballot,” Illinois GOP Chairman Tim Schneider said.

In a sign of increasing partisan hostilities, Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee plan to construct a wall – a physical partition – separating Republican and Democratic staff members in the committee’s secure spaces, according to multiple committee sources. It’s expected to happen this spring.

For now, some Republican committee members deny knowing anything about it, while strongly suggesting the division is the brainchild of the committee’s chairman, Devin Nunes, R-California.

“I’m not part of that decision,” said Rep. Mike Conaway, R-Texas. “You’ve got to talk to Devin. I don’t know what they’re trying to do one way or the other.”

“I swear to God I didn’t know that,” said Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Florida, when asked about the plan. While acknowledging a wall might not be constructive for the committee’s work, he said, “The level of trust and the level of everything down there is – it’s poison. It’s absolute poison down there.”

Rooney said one reason for the tension is an erosion of trust, exacerbated by an ongoing ethics investigation into the “entire Republican staff,” including “the woman up front that answers the phone” for alleged leaks. He later added that the matter was being handled by the Office of Congressional Ethics.

Bipartisanship, he said, “is gone. It’s gone from that committee.”

“We have heard reports that the chairman may seek to erect a ‘wall’ to divide the staff of the intelligence committee on a partisan basis — this would be a terrible mistake,” the committee’s ranking member, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-California, told CBS News. “While we have more than our share of difficulties, the important oversight work of the committee continues with our staff working together irrespective of party. This would be a very destructive decision.”

Well I suppose anything is possible, but first the dog has to get on the ballot.

It’s Chicago, so I kind of doubt he’ll have an actual chance. Even Republicans (at least where I live) tend to be socially liberal, so I don’t think they’d elect a white supremacist holocaust denier.

He hasn’t won the last five times he’s run, so I’d say chances are very low.

The GOP didn’t even try to find its own legitimate candidate because there’s no real chance of winning.

Illinois was one of the states Russia successfully breached, so maybe there’s people who can tell you right now that he’ll win.

I watched a rather fine play yesterday about the Roman orator Cicero (Imperium Part I & II by the RSC). For the vain, pompous and ridiculous figure of the then “past it” General Pompey Magnus they had the actor in a Trump style wig and at one point he belows to the audience that he has always been “A good Republican”. Oh how we laughed.

Pompey demanding that Rome put on a military parade in his honour was just an added comic bonus that the writers could not have foreseen when they wrote it.

…aaaaand we’re shutting down again. Congress seems willing to give Trump whatever he wants whenever he wants it, and this week they’re giving him the shutdown he didn’t want last week. Will it be a yoojer shutdown to show who’s got the bigger shutdown button?

Yep, the Senate is in recess until 12:01 AM, so assuming some sort of speed-of-light midnight laser vote, that’s a one minute shutdown at the minimum. I’m guessing it’ll drag quite a bit longer, as laser votes have not yet been invented, and even if they were, we would only use them for evil.

My disillusionment continues. During Obama’s presidency, as now, there were people in silly hats yelling. I thought those people were right about reining in government and reducing the debt. Tea Party candidates won some seats and the sequester became law. When Trump appeared they faded away or converted to the Trump religion. The few who remain don’t have any power - like Rand, Jeff Flake, Bob Corker. So we’ll get a short meaningless shutdown. And have a big parade.

Liberals have reason to be thankful to have lost the presidency because it forces people to care, creates change, and gets new candidates elected. It’s far more disempowering to have your own party in office doing things that are idiotic and contrary to what they proclaimed. I hope Democrats are far more careful in choosing the form of our destructor than the Republicans the last time round.

Can they not just tell anyone else to run against him? What do they mean they’ve “done everything [they] can,” have they done anything?

Looks like the shutdown is over, using the slightly slower old-fashioned steam-powered votes.

YouTube takes further action against Logan Paul, suspends all ads on channel

YouTube is suspending ads on all of Logan Paul’s videos after the personality uploaded a series of recent and offensive vlogs encouraging bad behavior.

This is a bigger consequence for Paul than YouTube’s first punishment, which simply was to remove Paul from Google Preferred, the company’s top-tier ad group for creators. Now, Paul will not profit from advertising on any of his videos for the time being.

A YouTube representative told Polygon it wasn’t a decision the company made lightly, but YouTube believes his entire channel is unsuitable for advertisers.

“After careful consideration, we have decided to temporarily suspend ads on Logan Paul’s YouTube channels,” the representative said. “This is not a decision we made lightly. However, we believe he has exhibited a pattern of behavior in his videos that makes his channel not only unsuitable for advertisers, but also potentially damaging to the broader creator community.”

Paul became one of YouTube’s most notorious creators in January, after he faced global criticism for uploading a video that contained the body of a man who recently committed suicide. YouTube canceled all of Paul’s YouTube Red series as a result, and dropped him from the Google Preferred program.

Since returning to YouTube, Paul has encouraged people to participate in the TidePod challenge — a dangerous trend where people eat TidePod detergent packs and an activity that YouTube has taken strict action against — along with tasering dead rats and using inappropriate tags for his videos.

If Paul continues to promote content that YouTube finds harmful for the community, he could be dropped from YouTube’s Partner Program entirely, ensuring he will never receive ads on his videos again.

The company isn’t trying to tell creators which types of content they should be creating. YouTube is asking that all creators keep in mind that, if their content is monetized and it violates the company’s guidelines, they may lose access to monetization features entirely.

Yeah, I don’t think the shape and color of laundry detergent packs needs to be regulated to make them less appetizing.

Mixed feelings on the YT thing. There is much that is dumb and dangerous that YT ignores while taking a hamfisted approach to ad revenue to appease advertisers. No sympathy for this Logan.

It’s politics. YouTube is getting bad publicity due to Logan Paul’s antics specifically because it’s in the news and makes the people with the money mad.

Well, not governmental politics, but there is surely business-related politicking involved, though maybe not exclusively. I imagine, yes, there are moral interests involved, but if there wasn’t a big public stink about his antics YouTube would likely not take action against him.

…especially considering the ad-suspension is still only reported as temporary.

See politics, definition 3a

It’s not a governmental issue except to the extent hearings will be held, legislation considered, and YT wants to head that off.
