He’s never gotten it. He thinks the entire universe spins around him.

Since the WH janitorial staff is taking a vacation until the shutdown is over, Trumpy will clog the Oval Office crapper for sure. 😉

Good. Democrats need to stand up for what is right, since Republicans never will.

During the 2013 shutdown, Chuck Schumer said:

I believe in immigration reform. What if I persuaded my caucus to say I’m going to shut the government down, I’m going to not pay our bills unless I get my way. It’s a politics of idiocy, of confrontation, of paralysis.

It’s fun to find examples of hypocrisy like this, even if one thinks Schumer is/was wrong.

Luckily Schumer has no power to shut the government down. Even if he convinces every Democrat to go along with him, the Republicans can keep the government running, if they want to. Such is the power of the minority party, post-filibuster.

Now if the Republicans can’t even convince themselves that they should keep the government running, that’s another thing entirely.

The filibuster still exists. That’s why the funding bill isn’t progressing.

If it didn’t that wouldn’t excuse every single legislator from doing their job. Schumer once claimed what the Democrats are doing now to be wrong. If Democrats want to hold up government funding in order to try to force a compromise (or just headlines) on immigration, that’s fine. But pointing out the absolute hypocrisy is at least fun.

Ah forgot they hadn’t axed it yet for spending bills. But then, if they can remove that filibuster with a simple majority vote just like all the filibusters they’ve already removed, you wonder why they’re not just doing it like they did any time they got tripped up with any of the others.

I think some still believe in the Senate as an institution, the value of compromise, or just fear the future of Democrats using unfettered power in the future. It is strange we’re not hearing much on the filibuster in this context. I had honestly forgotten the state of the filibuster too, but the predominant story in the media is that its all Republicans fault because they’re the majority party.

IMO plenty of news outlets seem to be pinning this on the Dems. Most of the places I see “blaming the Republicans” is in meta-blame pieces about who the voters are likely to blame, which is really different than actual blame.

The actual effect to most people (not all) is minimal…depending how long it is shut down of course. And essential services (which is maybe in the eye of the beholder but includes things like national security) are not shut down.

Regardless, if this is the only leverage Democrats have to force the protection of immigrants who are undocumented through no fault of their own, as well as restoring insurance to children (which the shitty Republicans took away) then I’m all for it…no matter what Schumer said previously or will say tomorrow.

I don’t have a direct source but on NPR they cited a poll that put the blame roughly 30% on dems, 20% on repubs, and 20% on Trump. Which is basically 40% repubs versus 30% dems.

Sanest thing it’s done in the last year. But yes, still fucking insane on an absolute scale. Grading this government on a curve is a mistake.

Some federal employees get some days off. The actual economic and long-term political effect is actually minimal.

Depends how long it goes. A few days is a holiday weekend. A few weeks or months and it’s a different story.

It’s not going to be months. No shutdown has ever come close to being that long.

This may seem blindingly obvious… If the party of Government can’t pass a bill on their own, they should make concessions until the other party (or parties) gives them the required votes. That’s democracy (or at least it is when you have a properly functioning Democracy).

A “shutdown” is nobodies fault but the party of Government. If they wanted to pass any bill they damn well liked (screw anybody else), then they should have got a bigger majority at the polls. They didn’t, so they need to deal with that fact and compromise like adults and not behave like petulant children.

(My limited knowledge of the fine details of US voting aside)

Quick Wikipedia search: During the 2013 shutdown Standard & Poor’s, the financial ratings agency, stated on October 16 that the shutdown had “to date taken $24 billion out of the economy,” and “shaved at least 0.6 percent off annualized fourth-quarter 2013 GDP growth.”

I’m not exactly clear who you are calling petulant children. The Republicans, Democrats, or both?

That was a late in the year shutdown though. With this one being at the beginning of the year, the effects should be mitigated (I hear).

And while the party that is blamed for the shutdown does lose a few points immediately after the shutdown, they always are able to regain it.
