The culture and the laws are intertwined, yes, but the discussion about them is different. Should we have decency laws? What kind? What should the penalties be for them? Are there different penalties for this infraction than for that one? How much of an infraction is an infraction? et al.

It is its own rabbit hole of a discussion aside from discussing why the culture should change to adopt acceptance of women going topless in public (which we also can’t agree on and for which I haven’t seen objective evidence to support why women, by and large, are wronged.)

its time to talk about the sexual assault charges against Donald Trump again.

Yes. We should never stop talking about it.

It is good to read through the accusations again. when time passes and no-one gets in trouble, our minds start to believe that what happened really wasn’t that bad, because there was no punishment.

But damn, Trump is a nasty man through and through. The most damning part of the accusations, isn’t the accusations themselves, but Trump’s responses to them. Its almost always dismissing the woman because she isn’t good looking “i mean, look at her”, dismissing her because he doesn’t remember “forgettable” and an important man like him doesn’t remember women, or dismissing her because she deserved it “she is a porn star”.

what a shitty guy.

How about everybody should wear a top when in public? Can we just agree on that and let it go?

Adding legal ramifications to the topic is why talking about things like abortion are so complicated. Talking about why it is morally wrong or culturally shunned is one thing. Talking about what laws should should be enacted to protect or prevent it is something else. We can’t even agree on the simple idea that women are somehow wronged by classifying their breasts as private parts.

Also a hat. Everyone must wear a hat.

Overruled, I get hat hair.

And since my head is different than everybody else’s it has to be treated differently.

I’m a closeted nudist, so no.

There’s lots of clothes in closets.

I’ll show myself out.

I’m not even joking about being a closeted nudist, BTW. I feel most comfortable without clothing, and I’d chose to go without clothing most of the time if the climate and the culture were conducive to it.

Nobody is telling women to go topless. All we are saying is a woman’s body shouldn’t be treated as obscene.

A woman’s body isn’t treated as anymore obscene than a man’s.

Tell that to the top half of a woman’s body.

Really?

Men can walk around without a shirt, women can’t. You’re still saying a woman’s body isn’t treated any more obscene than a man’s?

What are you even talking about?

Women have to cover their private parts, men have to cover their private parts.

But what makes a woman’s nipple more private than a man’s?

Read Chyron’s post.

I don’t get it?

Sorry, I meant read this post of Chyron’s:

chyron8472 said:

Women’s bodies are treated differently than men’s bodies, in part, because men are physically and hormonally affected differently by physical appearance than women and because American culture at large grew out of a more puritanical lifestyle.

To say that things should change because they’ve always been the same is equally as arbitrary as saying that things should remain the same for the same reason.

For example, the reason why women wear bras now instead of corsets has less to do with cultural progressiveness toward women, but more to do with the push to save metal needed to otherwise use in World War I. And while we look down on the use of corsets today, plenty of women back in the day weren’t as bothered by it since it was just part of the culture.

See also: Today I Found Out: How WWI Got Women to Start Wearing Bras

Just because you are progressive and believe women should not have to wear swimsuits that cover their breasts, that does not make their acceptance by the culture objectively wrong and worthy of change. As far as not wearing a bra, I’ve been married long enough to know that there is something to be said for the support they give with regard to any amount of exercise.

You know, I’m starting to think this thread was a better idea than y’all said it was.

Because it somehow helped?

Not that I can see.

It could have helped.

By getting more diverse people to join the forum?

The thread could have diagnosed the problems that are getting more diverse people to not join the forum, and therefore, put the structures in place that would help more of them join the forum.

And as I said, discussions about diversity are useful. It raises awareness about the issue, which is important.

Its a Star Wars forum. Its not going to attract women.

How is this a confusing or controversial response? Is it wrong? Men can walk around without a shirt, women can’t.

female breasts = private part, private parts need to be covered up. how is that confusing?

Women’s hair is different than men’s. I guess we need to cover that up.

Now that I think of it, women’s faces are different too. We should probably also cover that up.

People are not equal. Women and men are biologically different. Women are not inferior, but telling women to cover their breasts does not assume or imply this.

There is a particular male-centered-ness to Warbler’s and chyron’s arguments. Why does the male body have to be the standard that we measure women against?

Frink, you wouldn’t have any issue if your wife or daughter walked around topless?

Nowhere did I say I think women should walk around topless.

You sure seemed to be implying it. Why shouldn’t women walk around topless if men can? You should tell your female family members to do so, you don’t want to oppress them do you?

I merely disputed Warb’s assertion that men’s and women’s bodies are treated equally.

They are treated equally, they just have different private parts.

Holy shit. This is a completely illogical extension of what we’ve all been saying. We are simply against the double standard here; nobody here is telling women to strip topless for us.

I merely disputed Warb’s assertion that men’s and women’s bodies are treated equally.

They are treated equally, they just have different private parts.

2 = 1

Does this sound equal to you?
