It should be up to us. We speak the language. If people were willing to take the time to realize the context and intent of people’s use of words then it would help a lot.

By “us” I meant the two of us. It’s not as easy as telling everyone “hey, that word that offends you? don’t be offended anymore.”

I try to be cordial with people, but I don’t want to police what I say for fear of someone that I’m not even talking to taking offense at it.

I guess my hangup is that there is one specific gendered insult that is supposed to be far, far worse than any other, even other female-gendered insults, and is unacceptable in any context for very vague reasons of nondescript power dynamics and vague references to “history”. I know about the historical oppression of women, but why this word rather than any other?

I’m pretty sure it’s the same reason that “fuck” is a lot worse than “shit”.

Perhaps to a soccer mom it is, but like yhwx said, they’re kind of on par with each other. I’d say those two are considered worse because of what they literally mean, but then that brings up the hypocrisy of people considering “crap” worse than “shit” so, like I said, the only consistent way to handle this stuff is to either say they’re all okay, or they all aren’t. OR even better, you take it on a case by case basis. Did the person saying it use it in a way that made him asshole? If no, then move on. If yes, then, well, move on but remember that that guy is an asshole.

Man, where is this place that “fuck” and “shit” are on the same level? Middle-schoolers can get away with “shit” here, but a single utterance of the word “fuck” means trouble. Anyway, the point is that there is no reason that one is worse than the other, it’s arbitrary.

Oh okay, I get what you’re saying. That definitely was not my school experience. Everything worse than H-E-L-L was met with equal condemnation. Everyone said whatever they wanted anyway when adults weren’t listening of course.

You still can’t say it on television.

It’s amazing to me you can say shit and asshole on basic cable now.

You can say anything on basic cable, it’s not FCC-regulated. It’s Always Sunny aired two episodes with uncensored “fucks,” one of which also included uncensored C-, N-, and F-words (the other F-word). Taboo was aired in the US on FX completely uncensored, with multiple “fucks” and worse in every episode, and Mr. Robot airs uncensored episodes now and again, too.

On cable, it’s all about what the advertisers are okay with. If you can get enough advertisers to fill out your hour or half hour without censoring anything, you’re good to go. No FCC fines or anything involved.

Pretty sure I’ve heard it on American Dad, which has reveled in cursing since they moved to TBS from FOX.
I’ve heard Jackhole used on a couple shows on network tv in the past decade. Not sure if that phrase existed before that.

Not in my usage it doesn’t.

How do you use it then?

I guess that’s kind of a bad example on my part because it’s a rare word for me to use. I don’t really like the sound of it. On rare occasions, I use it to describe obnoxious people that can’t help but vocalize how gutless they are.

But don’t you see how “gutless” feeds into that stereotype?

Huh. People clearly have different ideas of the badness of swear words.

I can see how you would argue that fuck is worse than shit, considering our attitudes towards sex in our culture.

Adult Swim used to bleep out shit but doesn’t anymore. Some older AS shows had oodles of fake cursing such as Sealab 2021. You could hear the unbleeped versions on DVD.

I was taken aback at some rather graphic humping on some TNT series I saw a minute or two of while flipping channels. (I think it only airs at night though.) The MPAA used to be pretty anal retentive about that kind of suggestive body grinding even in a film aiming for an R rating.
Nudity seems to be another boundary that’s getting pushed further as well. Although I don’t think well see any actual naughty bits on basic cable anytime soon.

The irony is these channels still air edited for tv feature films that have been made less explicit than the original tv shows they are airing.

IIRC, the F bomb used to be an automatic R, but I think you’re allowed just one in a PG-13 film these days. Not sure how Spaceballs got away with one and kept it’s PG rating.

It’s been speculated Spielberg dropped some mild profanity into E.T. just to avoid the then dreaded G rating.

Kind of, but I don’t think it matters because the words are separated from the genders in my mind. To quote a brilliant man, “Calling someone a pussy isn’t the same as saying ‘Don’t be such a woman.’ Calling somebody a dick isn’t the same as saying ‘Don’t be such a man.’” No one in this day and age with a shred of decency or intelligence believes that women are inherently gutless. I actually just realized why I hate all this language policing. It’s basically because we, and by we I mean people that aren’t complete morons and aren’t complete and total piles of shit, have to watch what we say because stupid people believe stereotypes. I hate stupid people more than anything on earth, and to me, judging people based on their color or gender is essentially the stupidest, most ignorant thing that a person can do. I don’t do that because I’m not stupid enough to believe there’s merit to racism or sexism, so why should I change up my arbitrarily-deemed-offensive insults because other people are stupid enough to believe a stereotype that I myself don’t believe and everyone that knows me knows I don’t believe?

The rating system is awful and arbitrary, who cares what words they don’t like? Actually, the rating system legitimately is sexist. Exposed breasts of a woman will get you an R these days while the exposed chest of a man wouldn’t even push it to PG.

Speaking of the FCC…

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2017/11/rip-net-neutrality-fcc-chair-releases-plan-to-deregulate-isps/

The Federal Communications Commission today announced its plan to deregulate the broadband industry and eliminate net neutrality rules, setting up a December 14 vote to finalize the repeal.

As expected, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai is proposing to reverse the commission’s classification of home and mobile ISPs as common carriers, eliminating the legal justification for the net neutrality rules and numerous other consumer protections. The Republican-controlled FCC is likely to vote 3-2 along party lines in favor of Pai’s plan at its regular monthly meeting in December, ignoring Internet users who voiced widespread support for net neutrality rules.

Pai’s decision is a big win for cable companies, telcos, and mobile carriers that will no longer face regulation of their broadband businesses under Title II of the Communications Act. Pai ignored numerous calls from consumer advocates, website operators, and Internet users who urged the FCC to preserve the rules that force Internet providers to treat all Web content fairly.

Pai was on the losing end of a 3-2 vote in 2015 that imposed Title II regulations, including net neutrality rules that outlaw blocking, throttling, and paid prioritization. He started the repeal process shortly after President Trump appointed him chairman this year.

Today, Pai said that he intends to eliminate the core net neutrality rules while preserving some requirements that ISPs inform consumers about their network management practices.

“Under my proposal, the federal government will stop micromanaging the Internet,” Pai said in a statement today. “Instead, the FCC would simply require Internet service providers to be transparent about their practices so that consumers can buy the service plan that’s best for them and entrepreneurs and other small businesses can have the technical information they need to innovate.”

This is just stupid. There is no good argument for repealing these rules, and Ajit Pai is just wrong.
